Lessons Based on Postmodern Approaches

1) Transformation
Imagine a desired change in the world, large or small. Select an object that
symbolizes the current conditions, render it in graphite (alternatively in colored
pencils) and in 3 additional gradually transform the rendered image into a
symbol/object that represents the transformed condition (Murakami, Thomas).

Transform a cultural icon/symbol so that it is a more accurate representation of

life today, in your opinion (Murakami, Scharf, others).

2) Time
Comment on changes in culture/society/social world (school, local, regional,
global) over time through re-contextualization and juxtaposition (Sherman,
Rauschenberg, Barba).

Document and comment on the passage of time through the use of symbol and
ephemeral materials (Celmins, Goldsworthy).

3) Phenomenology of Space
Select a space that holds historical, social, or personal importance. Redesign or
embellish the space to reflect your phenomenological experience of that space
(Osorio, Bachellard, Celmins, Mehretu).

4) Space: Public and Private

Create two drawings, one that is descriptive of the public experience of a
particular space and one that describes a private experience of the same space.
Produce digital images of both drawings, disassemble them and remix the
drawings including additional images that reflect the culture of the space
(Mehretu, Dzama, Suh).

5) Appropriation
Select an image from popular culture that holds particular meaning for you.
Create an allegorical figure that symbolized the cultural narrative surrounding
the image/object you chose (Hogan).
