Lesson 3

Multiplication Strategies for Facts 2 and 4

Lesson Overview:
Students will learn and practice their computation for facts, 2 and 4. The teacher begins
the new lesson by introduction new information. They will relate strategies to solve
multiplication facts 2 and 4 to skip counting, doubling factors, drawing groups or arrays, and
doubling the double of a factor. Students will then fill in their Multiplication Chart for facts 2
and 4. After, students will complete their digital individual multiplication fact worksheets
independently for assessment through Schoology. The class will learn songs for both the 2 and 4
multiplication facts, and practice their multiplication fluency on the iPad app, Math Fact Master.
Students will be divided into their assigned small groups to practice automaticity and fluency
using their assigned strategy: arrays, flashcards, practice drills, and a hybrid.
Materials Needed:
Blank Multiplication Table-Complete columns and rows for facts 2 and 4 (Appendix B)
Multiplication Song-2 & 4
Interactive Whiteboard
Student iPads
App-Math Fact Master
Individual Multiplication Sheet (2 & 4) (Appendix E & F)
Schoology.com
App-Doceri
Lesson Objective:
Students will be able to apply strategies to solve multiplication problems with factors of 2 and 4
with 100% accuracy.
Time:
One 60 minute class session
Classroom Set-up:
Five classroom tables with five classrooms per table, Computer, Student iPads, Math Fact
Master, Schoology.com
Step 1: Pre-Instructional Activity

Students will get out their math journal and enter in a new entry titled, Multiplication
Strategies for Factors 2 and 4.
Step 2: Content Presentation
1. The teacher will introduce the concept for the day, strategies to multiply by 2 and 4.
2. The instructor will start with introducing strategies to solve when multiplying by 2. They
will begin by explaining that when multiplying by 2, the remaining factors that is not
two, simply needs to be doubled. It also follows a skip counting pattern.
3. The teacher will use the Interactive Whiteboard to model varying strategies that can be
used when multiplying by 2. They will then introduce varying methods to solve
multiplication problems with a factor of 2; drawing groups and arrays and repeated
addition. (Draw a 2 circles with 6 dots in each group, 2x6= 2+2+2+2+2+2=12,

4.

Students will take note of these strategies in their math journal as they are shown on the
Interactive Whiteboard.

5. The students will then turn to the Blank Multiplication Chart (Appendix B). They will
fill in the products associated with a factor of 2.
6. The teacher will introduce multiplying by 4 to the class. They will explain that when
multiplying by 4, you will double the factor that isnt 4, and then double it again
(2x4/2x2=4/4x2=8/2x4=8).
7. The teacher will then have the students write down the vocabulary term, Distributive
Property of Multiplication, in their math journals.
8. The teacher will then explain to the class, that sometimes we can break numbers down
(decompose) into known smaller factors to make multiplication problems easier to solve.
They will write the problem 4x8 on the Interactive Whiteboard, while the students take
notes in their journals. They will draw arrows breaking down the factor of 4 into smaller
factors, 2 and 2. Explain that the remaining unchanged factor will be multiplied by each
of the decomposed factors of 4, and then added together to find the product (2x8=16,
2x8=16, 16+16=32).

9. The teacher will write a new problem up on the board for the students to decompose the
factor 4 (4x6). Students will solve the problem on their iPad, using a whiteboard app (i.e.
Doceri). When they have answered, students will hold up their answer for a formative
assessment.
10. When the teacher feels that the students are proficient, they will explain that the strategies
used learned previously, drawing arrays and groups, repeated addition, and skip counting
can be used to solve multiplication problems with a factor of 4.
11. The teacher will then write a multiplication sentence on the Interactive Whiteboard, 5x4.
They will then instruct the students to use one of the strategies shown to solve the
problem on their iPads. They will hold up their answers to show the teacher their work.
12. The teacher will monitor students answers to check for understanding.
13. The teacher and students will fill out the Blank Multiplication Chart for all products that
relate to factors of 4.
14. Students will learn a multiplication song teaching the 2 and 4 multiplication facts.
15. Students will then complete the digital individual multiplication sheets for facts 2 and 4
found on Schoology. They will turn in their work to the teacher for assessment.
16. The teacher will grade students work and return to students with any feedback needed
using Schoology.
17. The teacher will then meet, small group, with the assigned multiplication strategy groups.
They are arrays, flashcards, practice drills (using the app, Math Fact Master), and a
hybrid group. These students will be given problems involving 2 & 4 multiplication
factors and asked to solve them using their assigned strategy. This is the time the
students are building automaticity and fluency.
Step 3: Learner Participation
1. Students will take notes on multiplication strategies to solve facts 2 and 4.
2. Students will fill out products associated with factor 2 and 4 on their Blank Multiplication
Chart (Appendix B) in their math journal.
3. Students will solve problems using taught strategies on their iPads when given by the
teacher as a formative assessment.
4. Students will learn and practice a multiplication song on the multiplication facts for 2 and
4.

5. Students will complete the individual fact worksheets for 2 and 4 on Schoology in their
assigned multiplication strategy group.
Step 4: Assessment
Students will complete two worksheets for facts 2 and 4 on Schoology independently.
They will be evaluated by the teacher and given back for feedback.
Step 5: Follow Through
Any unfinished problems from the independent works will be taken home and completed
as homework, accessed through Schoology. Both assignments will be due the following day.
