Title of lesson: Square Meter Plot

Type of lesson: Affective, Psychomotor, Cognitive

Benchmark or Standards:
MDE
M.TE.03.09: Estimate the perimeter of a square and rectangle in inches
and centimeters; estimate the area of a square and rectangle in square
inches and square centimeters.
S.IP.03.11: Make purposeful observation of the natural world using the
appropriate senses.
NGSS
3-ESS2-1: Represent data in tables and graphical displays to describe
typical weather conditions expected during a particular season.
Common Core
CC.SS.ELA.LITTERACY.3.2.B: Develop the topic with facts, definitions,
and details.
Learning Objective: Students will create and measure the perimeter
and area of the plot using materials provided.
Behavioral Objective: Students will create a one square meter for
their plot. They will make their plot the correct measurements by using
a meter stick. Then the students will find the perimeter of their plot.
Engagement/ Anticipatory set:

Ask students to gather around one table with green carpet square sitting in the
middle.
Present to them the following materials that will be used:
o Water bottle
o Ziploc of leaves.
o Glitter
o Toy bugs
o Sticks
Lay out toy bugs onto carpet. Ask students to imagine that the green square of
carpet is a square-meter of grass, and the home to all the bugs.
Inform students that you will be simulating weather patterns to example the
effects of haw different weather can affect the living environment for the bugs.
Ad each of the different items one by one demonstrating different forms of
weather on the grass.

Ask students how they think each weather has an impact on the ground, bugs
and environment the grass is in.

Instruction Procedures/ Steps:

Provide your students with the following materials:

o String
o Four stakes
o Meter stick
Travel outside to one of the nearest un-used/un-mowed grassy
areas
Example how to correctly setup up square meter plot
Using the string and stakes, the students will create a one-meter
square plot. They will measure their plot using a meter stick to
make sure that is exactly one square meter
Once the plot is created, allow your student to make noted
observation on everything that makes up their plot (land type,
grass amount, sticks, bugs, weed, ect.)
Students will continue to make observations each week,
observation how the changes in the weather patterns effect what
make up their plot.

Assessment:
Summative
Teacher will use meter stick to measure each plot, to make sure
that the area is one square meter and the perimeter is 4 meters.
Students will be measured on the data they obtained with the
use of the materials.
Higher Order Thinking Skills:
Comprehension- Students will notice results due to the change of
weather throughout a period of time.
