STAT 5013 Final Exam: Second Part

Name: ___________________________
Answer the following questions using a statistical package by analyzing the given data sets.
Bring a printed copy of solutions to the final exam with the EDITED output (maximum
THREE pages) and the program codes. You may consult the textbook, class note and other
printed materials but no collaboration is permitted on this part of the exam.
1. An article describes an experiment to investigate the relationship between the diameter of a nail (x)
and its ultimate withdrawal strength (y). Annularly threaded nails were driven into Douglas fir
lumber, and then their withdrawal strengths were measured in N/mm. The following results for 10
different diameters (in mm) were obtained.

a. Compute the least-squares line for predicting strength from diameter.

b. Compute the error standard deviation estimate s.

c. Compute a 95% confidence interval for the slope.

d. Find a 95% confidence interval for the mean withdrawal strength of nails 4 mm in diameter.

e. Find a 95% prediction interval for the withdrawal strength of a particular nail whose diameter is
4 mm.

2. A study of firefighters in a large urban area centered on the physical fitness of the engineers
employed by the fire department. To measure the fitness, a physical therapist sampled five
engineers each with 5, 10, 15, and 20 years experience with the department. She then recorded the
number of push-ups that each person could do in 60 s. The results are listed in the following table.

a. Perform an analysis of variance to determine whether there are differences in the physical
fitness of engineers by time with the department. Use = 0.05.

b. Use the Tukey-Kramer method to determine which pair of departments, if any, may be
concluded to differ at the 5% level.
