Overall, our physiology effects our motivation, our emotions, our general behavior.
To understand why a person behaves in a particular manner, it is important to
understand the physiological basis of behavior. In this LAP, you will study the brain,
neurological system, endocrine system states of consciousness in order to gain a
better perspective of behavior.

We also know that everything we experience in our environment is processed

through our senses. Our eyes, skin, ears, tongue and nose receive sensory input.
This information is processed through the central nervous system, then interpreted
both biologically and emotionally to produce our perception of the environment.
Sensation and perception form our world. Without them, we cannot make any
sense of what is happening around us. Perception is controlled psychologically in
that we filter, change, and alter our sensations to fit our needs and desires.
Nevertheless, sensation is a biological process.

Scientists definitely know that there is a relationship between biological factors and
behavior. However, it is extremely difficult to study this relationship. Through
diligent efforts, genetic scientists have discovered a link between genetic
makeup and homosexuality, alcoholism, depression, and other personality
disorders. Yet scientists have not been successful in formulating a definite
explanation on how the brain functions or interacts with environmental stimuli.
Scientists know that there is an old brain and a new brain. With certainty, they
know that the old brain controls the involuntary behaviors necessary for survival.
They also know that here are two hemispheres in the new brain, each having
distinct operations. Yet, scientists have not been successful in deciphering the
more complex areas of the brain, nor the full potential of the brain.

PSYCHOLOGY

Although many psychologists will contend that behavior is the result of an

individual interacting with her environment, the idea that there is a direct
relationship between behavior and the body is accurate. The Greeks understood
that the mind and the body interact. Today, scientific experimentation has proven
that genes indirectly influence behavior; the biochemical reactions impact the
functioning of the sense organs, nervous system, muscles, and the endocrine
system. A simple defect in a gene, a periodic misfire of a synapse shapes
behavior. A person is the product of her heredity and her environment.
