1. A spherical shell of radius R carries a surface charge density = k cos where k is a

constant.
(a) Calculate the dipole moment of this charge distribution.
(b) The potential outside the sphere is given as rB2 cos and the potential inside the
sphere is given as Ar cos . Find the constants A and B.
(5)
2. A spherical dielectric of radius R and dielectric constant r has a uniform free charge
density embedded into it. Find all the bound charges and show that they add up to
zero.
(5)
3. A metal sphere of radius R, carrying charge q is surrounded by a thick concentric metal
shell of inner radius a and outer radius b. The shell carries a net charge q. See Fig.
1 below.
(a) Find the surface charge densities at the three spherical surfaces of radii R, a and
b.
(b) If the potential at infinity is 0 find the potential at the center.
(5)
4. A grounded conductor has a spherical cavity of radius R in it. A point charge q is
placed in this cavity, a distance x (x < R), from the center of the cavity. See Fig. 2
below.
Find the force acting on this point charge. Is this force towards, or away from the
center of the cavity?
