Fig 1. Smokefree NHS. Ashes to Ashes. 2013

Smoking is a dangerous habit to get into and cost you much more than your life. The
people you hold most dear to you may abandon you, then all you will be left is your cigarette.
You shouldnt let smoking ruin your life, the price is just too high. This is a smoking print
advertisement campaign titled, Ashes to Ashes (fig.1) and was created by Smokefree NHS in
2013. The intended audience is people who dont smoke and those who are thinking about
starting to get into this horrible addition. The purpose for this advertisement is to inform people
of the dangers of smoking. This piece is effective in conveying the message that smoking is
harmful to your body and can kill you. These elements in the advertisement supports my claim.

Cropp 2

As the viewer, your first reactions to the ad may be sad and depressing. The creator
achieves these feelings by making the smoke coming out of the urn form a skull to suggest death
and suffering. The cigarette on top of the urn may be considered the cause of the death and
suffering you feel when you look at the advertisement. Smokefree makes this connection to the
message that smoking is harmful by tying the concept of death and cigarettes together in an
obvious way. The media used to tell the audience what smokefree wanted to say is a print
advertisement. The influence can be felt at any time because the ad can be in a magazine or on a
billboard.
The light and colors of this image are dark and depressing which may foreshadow death
and suffering. The first color you see is gray that could symbolize destruction and loss of hope
and the black background may symbolize death and doom. The first thing you may notice is the
skull created out of smoke. The skull symbolizes death and the small print which reads smoking
kills also shows that message. The urn the smoke coming out of is where they put your ashes
after you die, with the cigarette on top of the urn shows how smoking gets you one step closer to
death with each light. The placement of the urn in the foreground is important because it is the
main point in the message and needs to be seen first.

Ionic American Painting

Fig 2. Norman Rockwell. The problem we all live with. 1930.

This painting by Norman Rockwell, called a The Problem we all live with, was completed in 1930
and published as a centerfold on the fourth of January in 1964. The problem we all live with is an

iconic painting that has lasted through generations. It reminds us that no matter how different
you may be we are all still human. The audience is really anyone who looks at it and the purpose
is to show a dark time in our history that we should never forget. This painting by Norman
Rockwell was effective in conveying the message of desegregation in schools and discrimination.
The thoughts that first come to mind are hatred and unfairness to the black people during that
time. Although you may experience the negative feelings there is also feelings of strength and confidence.
The way Rockwell achieved those feelings is by having an African American girl in a white dress walking
with four white policeman to an all-white school. Also, the writing on the wall that reads nigger and

Cropp 4
K.K.K generate the negative thoughts. Although there is sadness, the girl holding her head up high
gives you positive thoughts. The median for this painting was oil on canvas. The painting influences
people by showing the horror of racism towards blacks back then. The people are portrayed with different
color skin to show the discrimination. The school books imply that she was going to school and the white
adults show desegregation. The color represents the blacks and the whites because of what was going on
during that time. The culture is about humanity and how we treat each other.
The colors used in this image are mostly tan and gray to keep the focus on the girl. The first
symbol that may be noticeable is the tan wall with reads nigger and K.K.K that symbolize the hatred
and separation for something as small as race. The next noticeable element is black because it represents
desegregation of schools. The little African American girl is in the foreground because she represents
Ruby Bridges, who was one of the first to be intergraded in an all-white school. She shows how people
wanted to change the future of this nation starting with civil rights. The tan building is located in the
background across the canvas with some hurtful language and tomatoes thrown at her. The significance
of how he placed the objects makes it all work and come together to create a message which is so
different for everyone. The message can be interpreted many different ways, but the basic message is still
desegregation and discrimination.

Fig 3. The Brave Girls Alliance. The Brave Girls Alliance #BraveGirlsWant. 2014

Girls these days feel like they are being mistreated and underestimated. Girls can do anything
and that is what the brave girls alliance is all about. This is a website created by The Brave Girls Alliance
titled, The Brave Girls Alliance #BraveGirlsWant. It was created on December 19 of 2014. The audience
is young girls with the purpose of telling girls you can do anything and youre strong. This website is
successful in conveying the message that girls can do anything and being girls shouldnt stop them from
reaching their goals.
The thoughts of empowerment and confidence is very dominate throughout the website. He
achieves these feelings by having a picture of a bunch of girls of different ages being happy together. This
connects to the message because the girls are happy and confident with who they are. This website
influences people because it keeps them interested and wanting to learn more. People may talk about it to
other people and get attention that way. The people are portrayed as happy and self-assured because many
people think that girls cant do everything boys can do simply because of their gender. This movement
wants to help change the idea of girls being portrayed as weak or mistreated. The girls are all different
ages and ethnicity to show that no matter if youre African American or six that doesnt mean you are
less.
The emotions are confidence and a sense of happiness. The culture it appeals to is the gap
between women and men in our society today. This tells us girls are not treated the same as boys and
girls are too weak or fragile to do sports or difficult jobs. The colors used in this website is mostly orange,
which gives you the sense of curiosity and the blue is a calm color. The color you see first is orange
because it is bright and gets your attention to look at the website. These orange and blue colors create the
feeling of happiness and fun. My eyes notice the picture first because they are trying to show the message

Cropp 8
of the girls being united and strong. The significance of this website is to show the bravegirls movement
and how it helps girls be confident in who they are and can do anything.

Video Clip

Fig 4. Sainsbury. Christmas is for Sharing 2014.

Christmas is a time for sharing and giving to others. Even in the darkest times, Christmas
time is the light that makes Christmas the most wonderful time of the year. This is a commercial

Cropp 9

by Sainsbury called, Christmas is for sharing, published on the 12th of November in 2014. The
intended audience is the general public to promote their grocery store. The intended purpose is to
advertise their store. Using the Christmas theme is to show how if you buy from them then you
can share with each other and feel the Christmas spirit. They were successful in conveying the
message of Christmas is a time for sharing with those around you whether you know them or not.
There are many ways he showed pathos in this commercial. When you see this
commercial you may feel happy and touched, but more than that you feel the Christmas spirit
coming at you, almost like it lifts off the screen. The creator achieves these feelings by using the
war setting and basing it off a real event. Even in war, Christmas is a time to share with those
around you, no matter the circumstances. The message of sharing is at the end of the clip when
the guys give each other something of theirs as they walk back to the trenches. The people in the
commercial are soldiers from opposite sides. They were the first two out of the trenches, which
got everyone else out of the trenches. The soldiers may represent the people who are supposed to
get to the other side and kill each other. They represent Christmas and the spirt of the holiday can
be felt even in the most extreme circumstances. The colors used are mostly white and brown to
show the bleak and war torn country around them. The trenches and barbed wire show the war
setting. The significance of the war setting is to show how Christmas is peaceful and grand.
He uses logos by making it based off an actual event. Sticking to the true meaning of
Christmas, which is spending time with our family and friends, this commercial evokes the
feeling of love and happiness that is easy to forget. Ethos is portrayed by the way Sainsbury
made the commercial creditable by putting their chocolate in the scene and having their name
and people associated with helping this commercial come to life.
