One significant learning experience in this
course was our teaching plan for shaving. We
made a teaching plan for a client with learning
barriers to teach them how to shave with their
learning barriers.

The proficiency category that I think I fit

under is good. I understand the the importance
of teaching a client and family. Its important
that the client can perform certain skills on
their own as well as understand medical
procedures or medications they are
doing/taking. I also understand the importance
of teaching clients and family in scenarios and
nursing practice. Without the teaching the
client and family would have no idea what was
going on or how to properly take care of
themselves.

Learning the importance of client and family

teaching will help me teach skills to clients in
a better detail because I understand the
importance of teaching clients. Doing the
teaching plan will help me apply it to future
nursing practice because i understand how it
helps the client learn. It also helps the client
feel more cared for and thats an important
thing when caring for a patient.

catheters

Significant Learning Experience: Describe ONE significant learning experience in

this course related to a CLPNA competency. Provide an example.
A significant learning experience during this class that relates to the learning
competency is demonstrating how to insert a catheter to the instructor during lab.
During lab in order to pass the lab we had to demonstrate how to insert and take out a
catheter. The instructor watched us do it in order to make sure we followed the
correct technique and understood the procedure.
What You Learned: Describe what you learned and how it relates a competency.
Explain why it was meaningful
Demonstrating the skill to the instructor helped me understand the technique to insert
and take out a catheter. Demonstrating it also helped me have the ability to do it
under pressure. It helped me learn the best way to do so when i do it on a real patient
i will have a less limey chance of hurting the patient. This relates to the competency
because demonstrating how to insert and take out the catheter shows how we
understand and have the ability to insert and take out a catheter. It was meaningful for
me to demonstrate inserting and taking a catheter to the instructor because it will help
me to remember better and I know now I have the proper technique of doing it.

I would rate myself as good on the competency scale. I understand the importance of
a catheter and why they are inserted. I was able to demonstrate how to insert the
catheter without being correct to many times only minor errors. I was also able to
remove the catheter with out major error. Since i demonstrated the how to insert and
remove the catheter I think i fully understand how to do the proper technique
Nursing Practice: Describe how you will apply this learning in your current and
future nursing practice?
I will apply this to my future learning by asking to demonstrate how to do new skills to
the instructor more often. I understand now that it is very helpful and it makes you
want to do well because you want to impress your instructor. I will use this to my future
practices by using the proper technique of inserting a catheter and taking out a catheter.
I will also use this toward my future nursing by making sure I dont hurt the patient well
inserting and taking out.

Significant Learning Experience
-One significant learning experience in this course was simulation lab. We had the
opportunity to practice some of the skills we had learnt from class including teaching for a
post partum client. We got the opportunity to try our hands on instead of just listening and
learning.
What I learnt
-This experience gave me the opportunity to apply my previous knowledge of post partum
care to an actual client. We had the opportunity to provide care for a mom from the delivery

room and do different assessments that need to be done post partum. As well as providing
necessary teaching for the parents. We also had the opportunity to do assessments for the
newborn baby. It was a great learning opportunity to critical think in post partum care.
Proficiency rating
-I would give myself a proficiency rating of good. I was able to practice the skills in sim
lab. I also had the opportunity to learn the skills of care of a post partum client in class so I
have the knowledge. I did not practice my skills in real life nursing care though. This is
why i give myself a rating of good.
Nursing practice
-I will use this experience to provide proper post partum care to clients. I have not only the
knowledge but the skill do to so. We learnt some critical thinking tools in sim lab which will
help in future nursing. I also have the hands on experience to provide proper care to a post
partum client.

PROFICIENCY RATING

I would rate myself fair. I have the ability to

demonstrate the theory of the competency and in
scenarios but have never applied it to nursing care.
Ive done a few scenarios in class so I know I have the
ability to provide my knowledge to scenarios. Ive
never had the opportunity to put my knowledge into
nursing practice. This is why I give myself a rating of
fair.
The knowledge I have gained from this experience will
be applied to my nursing care by providing teaching
according to the stage of development the child is in.
I will also use this knowledge to provide parents the
right information about growth and development of
their child. This knowledge will come in good use if I
ever have to care for a pediatric client.
