Find a new companion with the help of Fresno Bully Rescue
resno Bully Rescue is a volunteer-based,

non-profit, no-kill rescue and shelter
dedicated to rescuing bully breed
dogs (American Pit Bull Terriers, American
Staffordshire Terriers, American Bull Dogs,
Bull Terriers, etc.). FBRs mission is to provide
a healthy and loving temporary home while
we look for forever homes for our bullies. In
addition, FBR is committed to promoting
responsible ownership of bully breeds, fighting
against breed discrimination, spaying and
neutering pets, reporting dog fighting, and
demonstrating to the community that bully
breeds are loyal, loving, and wonderful forever
companions. We are one of the only breedspecific, no-kill rescues with an actual kennelfacility in California. We house over 45 adult
dogs at our facility (with many more puppies
and adults in foster homes!).

Besides rescuing and adopting, FBR
is also committed to providing educational
services in the community, micro-chipping,
and promoting spaying and neutering and
responsible ownerships of the bully breeds.
In addition, FBR is committed to advocating
for the bully breeds by doing educational
outreach to the high risk communities about
the illegal practice of dog fighting, as well as
providing mental & physical rehabilitation
and training to our bully residents while in

our care. Fresno Bully Rescue is also available
to provide guidance and assistance to forever
families of our dogs during the transition to
their forever home.

Because of foreclosures in California,
an overwhelming amount of dogs are being
surrendered to shelters. Bully breeds are the
first to be euthanized if no one adopts or
rescues them. Since over 1 million pit bulls
are euthanized in the United States yearly
(statistics provided by Best Friends Society,
Kanaab, Utah), the service provided by FBR
is critical for the Central Valley which has one
of the highest rates of euthanization in the
whole of California. (statistics provided by
CCSPCA).

Since its founding in May 1, 2008,
FBR has rescued over 2,500 dogs. At our
shelter, we house over 45 resident dogs at all
times. Some rescued from the community,
from abusive homes and county shelters where
they were designated to be euthanized.

10 years young and is also blind but that doesnt slow her down much. She is in excellent physical

also cat friendly! She would do well with older kids only beacause her blindness makes her a bit

Calming, soothing, and great for your skin.

go to oils. I also think it is one of
the most widely known oils. Many
products are infused with lavender scent.

Lets not confuse the scent of
lavender with therapeutic-grade lavender
however. Purchasing a lavender-scented
fabric softener or candle is not going to
make you a healthier person. Essential oils
that are purchased in the craft store will
not improve your wellness either. Adding
therapeutic-grade essential oils to your daily
routine will impact your physical health as
well as your emotional health.

Historically, lavender was used to
promote tissue regeneration and increase
the speed at which flesh wounds can heal.
Today, lavender is widely used in skin care
products for the same reason. Simply put
skin loves lavender!

Other medicinal uses for lavender
include: respiratory infections, high
blood pressure, arteriosclerosis, menstrual
problems and PMS, and skin conditions
such as perineal repair, acne, eczema,
psoriasis, scarring, and even stretch marks.
Lavender can also be applied to minor
burns. Other common uses for lavender oil
are to combat hair loss, eliminate insomnia,
and relieve nervous tension.

The most important properties
of lavender are: anti-septic, anti-fungal,
analgesic, anti-tumoral, anti-convulsant,
vasodilating, relaxant, and antiinflammatory. Lavender has also been
shown to reduce blood fat and cholesterol.
Since it can also combat excess sebum on
the skin, many people use it to fight acne as
well.

Because lavender is very calming
and soothing, people often diffuse this oil
throughout the day. Studies have shown
that diffusing lavender oil in a work
environment can dramatically improve
mental accuracy and concentration.
Students who diffuse lavender while taking
tests in school can increase their test scores

by as much as 50% due to increased
concentration levels.

Lavender can also reduce
depression. Because inhaling lavender
increases the beta waves in the brain, people
become more relaxed and balanced by the
whiff.

Lavender can be used in a variety
of ways. The most obvious way to use
lavender is to diffuse it. Direct inhalation
by rubbing a few drops on your hands
and cupping your hands over your face is
another soothing way to enjoy lavender
during the day. Place a couple of drops on
your pillowcase to sooth you throughout the
night. Dab a drop or two behind your ear
and wear it like perfume to increase mental
clarity while at work. Lavender is also safe to
ingest as well as safe for topical application.
Your skin will love it!

This may sound strange to some
people, but lavender can also be used in
cooking and baking. Add a couple of drops
of lavender to vanilla frosting to spice
up those cupcakes for your next party.
Lavender blended with other spices used in
meat dishes creates a unique taste that will
make your family take notice.

Lavender is also very soothing
to pets. Dogs, cats and even horses alike
will be calm and peaceful from the smell
of lavender. Sprinkle a couple drops of
lavender in those places your cats scratch
too much, and they will naturally move
to another, hopefully more appropriate,
spot. A drop in your dogs bed will make a
peaceful night for you all.

relish the smell, the taste and the various blends

A great way to start your year doing
something different is to start small. Try mixing
up your ritual of morning/afternoon coffee and
give another place a shot to offer you roasted,

Americana Blues guitarist, Richie Blue
has an impressive career spanning 45 years.
Hes toured internationally with renowned
blues man Terry Hanck and the late harmonica
master, Norton Buffalo. He currently performs
regularly in gigs handled by his manager,
Marilyn.

Their relationship started innocently
enough, Marilyn just happened to be at one
of Richies shows when she needed to retrieve
a borrowed guitar for a friend, one look and
thats all it took. The rest, as they say, was
history, Marilyn and Richie working together
ever since.

The couple made their way to
Fresno about 8 years ago. Marilyn is a Fresno
native, (Fresno High, class of 78) and it was
her family ties that led them to make the
move to the Central Valley, so she could be
closer to her aging parents. Richie originally
hails from Ellensburg Washington, an
agricultural city of 26,000 in the eastern part
of the state.
Presently Richie
hosts and performs at the weekly Hump Day
Blues Jam at the Skyline Club in Clovis on
Wednesdays. On any given night some of
the finest musicians in the Valley,or even
those who are just passing through, show up
to play a few tunes with their friends. Last
week, John Cliftons Band played a set getting
ready for a mini tour in Southern California.
John recently returned from two weeks in
Poland and Denmark and is going back in
April. Fresno native Dave Chavoya played a
set last month when he was in town to visit
his parents. For those who dont know, Dave
is a highly regarded harmonica player who
migrated to Sonoma a long time ago but
stillcomes toFresnooccasionallyto visithis
family.

Richies bands current lineup
consists of legendary Valley blues drummer
and teacher, Chris Millar, andbassist Jon
Crossen. Occasionally Brandon Polin will
play second guitar when Richie wants a full
quartet sound. If youre lucky, sometimes you
can spot Fresnos own guitar master, Roger
Perry, playing some gigs on bass, guitar and/
or vocals.

However, in the month of March,
youll be hard pressed to find Richie
They are, in my humble opinion, a fantastic

band. Call it destiny. call it persistence, call it
what you wantbut The Green Machine will give
you an unexpected experience! I dont willingly
give this sort of praise to many, but I do for
them because they really do deserve it.

Listening to the CD that Chris Avila
gave me in San Jose over a year ago is still a
joyful experience. I whole heartedly believe that
they are goingbe recognized far and wide this
year. And I strongly suggest that if you have
any interest in reggae that you give The Green
Machine a listen. You can find their music via

tourfrom Northern California to his
home in Ellensburg,Washington, and
in to Montana. During our meet at
the recent Thursday Art Hop gig for
Richie at Gazebo Gardens, I asked
how she likes being Richies manager.
Her response was a happy one.

I love this job. booking
Richie and keeping the business
side together is the most gratifying
job I have ever had. I guess it helps
when you love the person you are
marketing and I do. We have had
some wild adventures on the road;
driving through white-out blizzards
and hitting a400 pound buck,
tocoaxing club owners to pay when
they have decided otherwise. Its been
a heck of a ride and I have enough
road storiesfilled withcomedy and
drama to fill a book.

Richie and Marilyn Blue are
truly a class act. The Central Valley
is fortunate to have such a talented
guitarist/performer calling Fresno

Chris and Tina Avila are based in the
South Valley so we dont see them as often as
we wish in Fresno, but theyre only a short drive
away, performing in Hanford, Visalia and Three
Rivers. They perform all over California and will
be performing in Visalia at the Cellar Door on
