BRIEF

THE PENNDESIGN OBJECTIVE

PennDesign offers a unique perspective to the the Wharton Charity Fashion Show which mainly
showcases samples of ready to wear collections. As designers of disciples of PennDesign, we do
not attempt to mimic the qualities of fashion design, but rather create new possibilities for what
our design fields could do to the human body in terms of aesthetic considerations. For example,
instead of beginning the exploration as creating a dress or pants, the design teams are encouraged to create body architecture or body landscapes. Our unique sense of craftsmanship and
PennDesigns innovation in design technique and materiality should be celebrated.

THE DESIGN SUMMARY

PennDesign has been asked to design and fabricate nine looks for the 2016 Wharton Charity Fashion Show. All of these fully-funded ensembles will walk down the runway next to designers like
Michael Kors, Anthropologie, Bloomingdale's, Tiffany's and Diesel. Anyone at PennDesign is invited to participate. We will begin with an open call design charrette where groups of 3-5 designers
will present their ideas. At the charrette we will vote on the the top designs and then move for ward
with fabrication and budgeting.

THE DESIGN CHALLENGE

The objective is to begin with a part to whole relationship, creating a modular unit to be aggregated
into a simple form that accentuates a portion of the body (i.e. shoulders, head, hips, torso etc.) A
surface treatment studying a part to whole relationship in patterns and voids is also highly encouraged. We highly recommend clean and simple designs that develop one unit through a single
system of joining to create a piece that is articulated on a singular body part.
The theme of our collection is Metals and Mythology, however we only encourage a color palette
of silver and white for the integration of the theme. Teams are required to have sketches of their
designs, yet preliminar y material, fabrication and budget ideas would be extremely beneficial.

THE CHARET TE
On MONDAY, FEBUARURY 8th at 7:00*, a design charette will be held where all the groups will
pin up their designs. All participants will vote on the top ten designs to move into advancing the
design and the fabrication process.
