ARABSPRINGANALYSIS

WhenMohammedBouazizisethimselfonfireonDecember17th,2010,hedidnot
mostlylikelythinkthathisactionswouldleadtoarevolution.Earlierthatday,Bouazizi,a26
yearoldTunisianman,wasbeatenbythepoliceandhiscartwasconfiscatedbecausehedidnt
haveapermit.Beingareasonableman,hewenttothemunicipalcourttofileacomplaint,where
hewasignored.Hesethimselfonfirenotlongafter,settinginmotionafierymovementthat
spreadacrossTunisiaandeventuallythewholeMiddleEast.ThismovementwascalledtheArab
Spring.
TheArabSpringwastheseriesofindependentrevolutionsthatspreadacrosstheArabian
Worldin2011,andsomemayargueitisstillgoingontoday.Itsorigin?TheTunisian
Revolution,ortheJasmineRevolution.Bouazizisactofselfimmolationsparkedsmallscale
demonstrationsinhishometown,andthenewsalongwithprotestsquicklyspreadacrossTunisia.

Bouazizi'sactofdesperationhighlightsthepublic'sboilingfrustrationoverlivingstandards,
policeviolence,rampantunemployment,andalackofhumanrights,saidAlJazeeraEnglish,a
popularmultimediacompany.MajorityofTunisiansagreedwiththisstatementandplannedto
overthrowPresidentZi
neElAbidineBenAli,andthecorruptionandharshpoliciesthat
followedhim.Whenthearmedforcesrefusedtostrikedowntheprotests,BenAliwasforcedto
leavethecountry.
Manycountriesfollowedsuit:Egypt,Libya,Yemen,Bahrain,Syria,Morocco,Jordan,
etc..Themovementspreadlikewildfire,andthesuddendesiretorebelwassimilartotheFrench
mentalityafterwitnessingtheAmericanRevolution.LiketheFrench,theystartedtorealizethat
itwaspossibletoreformtheirgovernmentandlivealifetheydesired.Butlikealways,theplans

torenewtheircountriesandwayoflifewasntverysmoothoreffortless.EventhoughTunisia
hadsuccessfullygotridoftheirformerpresidentandranaparliamentaryelection,theinstability
ofthecountrycontinuedforawhile,andisjustrecoveringandifnot,isstillinthreatofbeing
unstable.Othercountriesalsoexperiencedandarestillexperiencingtheunsteadytransitionstate
aftertherevolution.InLibya,thevictoryover
Col.MuammaralQaddafisdeath,thelongest
runningrulerinAfrica,wasshortlivedwhenitlefttheircentralgovernmentweakandexposed
politicalviolenceandreligiousextremismcontinuestocorrodetheexhaustedcountry.InYemen,
civilwarhasrecentlybrokenoutbetweenthecurrentpresidentandrebelgroups.Similarly,Syria
hasalsobrokeintoanalloutcivilwarbetweenPresidentAssadandvariousrebelgroups,
includingthereligiousextremistgroupcalledISIS.
ThecurrentviolenceintheMiddleEastisaconsequenceoftheeventsoftheArab
Springtheconsequencesofunresolvedinstability,corruption,malnutrition,employment,and
more.ThebrutalandviolenthistoryoftheMiddleEasthasscarredcountriesandmadeithard
forthemtochangestrictpasttraditionsandmethods.Thisdoesnothelpwhentheworldaround
themisconstantlychanging.TherevolutionoftheArabianworldhasbeenprovenagreat
challenge,andinsomecountries,suchasYemenandSyriadoesnotseemtobemakingany
progress.Buthopeisnotlost,countrieslikeTunisiaandEgypthavemadesomeprogressand
showapromisingfuture.Althoughitdoesnotseemlikeprogress,changedoesntnotnecessarily
happenovernight,especiallyinrevolutions.Forinstance,theFrenchRevolutiontookdecades,
andtheirgovernmentwasnotstableforaextensiveamountoftime.
