TAOTPA
ALL
P PARISHIONERS
T OLLARISHIONERS
Who can remember John Masefield's beautiful poem Sea Fever? I must go down
to the sea again, to the lonely sea and the sky, and all I ask is a tall ship and a
star to steer her by.
On July 12th we have an opportunity to remember the Mission to Seafarers on
Sea Sunday, when we think of everyone whose way of life and livelihood depends
upon the sea. In the coastal waters of Britain and all over the world the Mission to
Seafarers provides support, in everyday life and in maritime emergencies. In
Norfolk we are fortunate to have a very beautiful coastline which attracts many
visitors to our region. However, if we think globally, Sea Sunday takes on
particular significance. I must go down to the sea... Current news stories remind
us of the plight of huge numbers of desperate people, men, women and children:
economic migrants and refugees fleeing war zones, risking and so often tragically
losing their lives in over-crowded, unseaworthy vessels; and finding little comfort
after they disembark as they are refused entry to their chosen destination; and
refugee camps spring up across the Mediterranean. We all have the right to live
without fear. As fellow members of the human race we cannot help but have
profound sorrow at these tragic events, perhaps feeling powerless to influence
things; but we do have the option to lobby our MP, to actively support
humanitarian organisations such as Christian Aid, and most importantly to pray for
compassion to prevail, for stability and justice in the regions from which so many
are fleeing for their lives and, at European governmental level, for compassionate,
creative, economically sustainable solutions. The Archbishop of Canterbury and
the Pope have joined together in calling for Europe as a whole to rise up and seek
to do what is just. Amen to that.
Reverend Judith

Thank You
Many thanks to those who contributed to the
Christian Aid collection in Congham. 240.52 was
raised.

Dog Bins Notice

Grimston Parish Council request that all users of the Dog Bins around Grimston &
Pott Row please take note. If a dog bin is full could you please take your dog waste
home and place it in your Black Bin (double bagged) - which is acceptable. Also
apparently people are taking their dog waste from their gardens and putting it in the
dog bins - this is not what they are there for - they were provided for dog walkers to
use. Again double bag it and use your Black Bin please.

Tolerance of Pet Cats

It has come to our attention that some residents in the villages have been verbally
abusive towards pet cats-threatening to shoot them and also suggesting catching
them in a cage. This behaviour is frightening to pet owners and unacceptable.
Humane deterrents are:
Shoo the cat away by clapping hands or use a low powered water pistol, being aware
not to scare cat onto road.Cultivate shrubs closely and/or use plants cats do not like
such as 'coleus canina but NOT poisonous varieties.Consider using pebbles/shingle
in the long term or in the short term crushed egg shells or holly leaves.
Lion dung infused pellets or chicken manure pellets. Automatic garden spray,
triggered by infra red detector which locates movement.

THANK YOU! Coffee Morning & BBQ

St Andrew's Church PCC would like to thank Albert & Marjorie Peach for hosting
this very successful event.
Albert & Marjorie along with their team of busy bees, Trevor, Carly, Tina, Ann,
Jenny, Jenny, Andy & Harry raised an amazing 629.00 towards St Andrew's
Church kitchen fund.
"Thanks" also go to all the local businesses and villagers who supported the
event by attending, and donating raffle prizes, cakes, plants & bric a brac.

TiddlyPotts Playgroup
Many thanks to everyone that attended the opening of TiddlyPotts Playgroup on 5th
June, it was lovely to see so many of you there. We were overwhelmed by the
number of people wanting to register with us and therefore had to make the decision
to limit the number of spaces we could offer during our sessions on Friday mornings
at Pott Row Methodist Church. All of our spaces were very quickly allocated and we
are now FULL. However, due to popular demand we are operating a waiting list
system, so if you haven't visited us yet, please feel free to come a long for a session
one Friday 9.30am-11.30am, find out what we have to offer, meet the playgroup
leaders and join in with our fun activities.....then let us know if you would like to be
placed on our waiting list!
Many thanks

Grimston & District Good Companions

At our July meeting our subject for discussion was 'Superstitions.' On each table
was an envelope containing slips on which were written different superstitions,
some well known and some more unusual ones. We took turns to read them
out, and then shared our memories and amusing stories about how they had
had impact on our lives in the past. One member recalled the time he was
determined to disprove the saying that walking under a ladder was unlucky, by
deliberately walking backwards and forwards under a ladder without any
problem - until the man using the ladder carefully dropped something on his
head! We also spun coins to find out which way they landed -would we get
heads for 'good luck' or 'tails for bad luck!'
We then enjoyed a delicious tea kindly provided by members of the Green
Fingers.
Our next meeting will be held at the Methodist Chapel when we join with the
church members for the annual strawberry tea, an afternoon which this year will
include music provided by musicians from Springwood High School.
Our annual outing in August will be a visit to Pensthorpe.

GRIMSTON & DISTRICT W I

Would like to invite any former members to join us for afternoon tea to celebrate our
80th birthday and the W I Centenary. This is being held at the Chapel on Saturday
12th September 2015 at 3pm till 5pm. We hope you can join us to catch up with
friends past and present.
RSVP if possible to Mary Roper 01485 600003 or Jenny Baker 01553 630369

Oldies Who Lunch

Our next OWLS meet is at Knights Hill on July 15th and then we thought perhaps
back to our local Three Horseshoes on August 12, as the previous lunch there was
very good. Anyone who would like to come would be most welcome; there must
someone out there who would like some chatty company for lunch!! Please contact
Judith Gough on 01485 609217 or goughpj@btinternet.com and if you need
transport, that can be arranged!

King's Lynn Poetry Festival

Greenfingers June 2015

The meeting commenced with notices and general information. Jenny Haywood
thanked all the members who helped with the Plant & Cake Sale, which raised
450 for club funds. Raffle and Tombola prizes were requested for the Annual
Show on September 5th. The Club is entering the Sandringham Flower Show in
the Small Gardens section.
Mr Jonathan Denney gave a brief talk on Ezone, a day centre supporting local
young adults with learning difficulties. They make and sell a variety of items
which helps to boost their self- confidence. Along with Remap, this is the second
charity we have chosen to support at our Annual Show.
Our guest speaker Dr Ian Bedford, chief entomologist at the John Innes Centre,
gave us his lifetime's experience on bugs, a fascination that started in childhood.
He spoke on beneficial and destructive bugs and recent entries into the country,
who hitch a ride across The Channel with ease. The Spanish slug is the latest
unwanted invader, large, striped and very prolific.
Plant of the month winners were:
1st Neville Jackson, 2nd Eileen Godsall, 3rd Mary Cross.
Outing to Peter Beales Classic Roses: From greeting the coach on arrival, to
waving the visitors goodbye, the staff at Peter Beales looked after the Club
Members superbly. The cafeteria was outstandingly good, the roses superb and
the quality of the plants on sale excellent. A talk, with tea and cake, followed by a
tour of the gardens made a fitting end to the visit. Many thanks to the organisers.
The next meeting on July 14th is an evening visit to Dale Farm Gardens,
Dereham. The coach will leave Pine Parlour at 6.30pm. Cars can be left as usual
on the Village Hall carpark.
Due to ill-health, there is a change of speaker at the meeting on August 11th.
Simon White, sales manager at Peter Beales, will talk on Gardens of East Anglia.
All are welcome.

Grimston, Congham, Roydon and Pott Row to take part in our Annual Show on
Saturday, September 5th in the Village Hall, Pott Row.

DOG SHOW IN GRIMSTON IN AID OF TANZANIA

On Sunday the 9th of August I will be holding a dog show opposite the church in
Grimston to raise funds for an expedition to Tanzania in 2016. My name is
Charlotte Page and I am currently an A-level student at Springwood High School,
and the trip will take place after my exams. The organisation that I am travelling
with, Camps International does vital work with communities all over the world,
from helping build and furnish schools, to beach clean ups and digging new water
holes. These projects are run all year round and during my time there I will be
working on a few of them.
The dog show will have a mixture of classes; a handful of pedigree classes
followed by fun classes such as 'dog with the waggiest tail' and 'dog most like
owner'. Sunnyside Vets have kindly offered to help judge the show.
The show will run from two o'clock onwards, entry fees are 1 per class.
If you would like a copy of the schedule before the show, please email
pagecharlotte@live.co.uk or phone 07747720004.

Summer 1915, Continuing the story of Grimston men killed in

WW1
George Mayes died Monday 12th July 1915.
In the early months of the war the army was made up of regulars and the territorials.
The pre -war British army drew its rankers from the urban and rural poor and
although life in the army was tough it could appeal to young men wanting to escape
poverty. Like Alfred Rumbles and Lloyd Franklin, George Mayes joined the forces
several years before the war. George was in the same battalion in the 1st Norfolk's
as Lloyd Franklin but we have no way of knowing whether they served together or
knew each other.
George had already been wounded and returned to duty once before his death in
July 1915. From the war diaries it seems that, following the savage battle for Hill 60
in the spring, the Norfolk's were in trenches around Verbranden Molen for all of
June and some of July and it was during these routine trench duties that George
was killed. Mr and Mrs Mayes received the news of his death quite quickly and it
was reported in the Lynn News on the 30th July. At a commemorative church
service Rev Ellaby told the congregation that George was a quiet and steady lad,
kind to his parents and an example to others. The fact that his parents thanked
villagers for the letters and presents sent to George at the front bears witness to his
popularity.
George was buried in a battlefield grave in a small cemetery called Trench
Railway Cemetery with twelve comrades; Walter Hammond who was a village lad
the same age as George and who was also serving in France, wrote to the rector to
inform him that George had been buried by his comrades and in this at least Mr
and Mrs Mayes could take some comfort. At the end of the war, when many
battlefield burials were brought in to larger cemeteries, George was finally laid to
rest in Perth Cemetery, Zillebeke.
Please contact us if you are related to George and would like a photograph of him.
Cecil Ellaby Sunday 8th August 1915
Cecil Ellaby was the son of the rector of Grimston, Rev Alfred Ellaby. He was born
in Hales, Staffordshire and had two sisters and two brothers. Cecil was sent to
school at St John's School in Leatherhead which was then a school for the sons of
clergymen; he was there in 1901 when he was twelve. By 1911 Cecil was a bank
clerk living in Sheffield lodging in the house of Joseph Rodgers. It seems banking
didn't work out for Cecil as on 25th May 1912 he boarded the ship Drayton
Grange in Liverpool bound for Auckland New Zealand. In the same year another of
his brothers Francis, set sail for Canada.
On the outbreak of war Cecil joined the New Zealand Army in Holmbush, Gisborne
and he was soon on board a ship again, this time the Mauganui carrying the
Wellington Infantry Battalion to Gallipoli via Suez. The Wellington Battalion took
the summit of Chanuk Bair before dawn on 8th August 1915; it was the greatest
achievement of the Gallipoli Campaign for the ANZAC forces. However, with
10| village link

daylight the Turks mounted a furious counter attack and Cecil was killed sometime
during this day long battle. He was not alone. When reinforcements finally arrived in
the evening the Wellingtons had had seven hundred and eleven men killed or injured
out of seven hundred and sixty. Cecil Ellaby has no known grave and is
commemorated on the Chanuk Bair Memorial.

Register of Electors
This year's annual registration exercise starts towards the end of July and everyone
will be responsible for their own registration. This is called Individual Electoral
Registration (IER) and replaces the previous system which allowed one member of a
household to register everyone who lived at their address.
The first part of the registration process is the issue of a Household Enquiry Form to
collect the details of people aged 16 or over. Anyone new to an address or who is not
currently registered under IER will then be sent an individual registration form.
The Electoral Registration Officer would very much appreciate householders' cooperation in completing the Household Enquiry Form as quickly as possible. A
prompt response to any individual registration forms issued would also be helpful.
Online registration is now available at www.gov.uk/registertovote and only takes a
few minutes. If anything is unclear, householders or individuals can contact the
Electoral Helpline on 01553 616773.

Campaign to reduce pressure on A&E this summer

Holidaymakers and tourists will be encouraged to Choose Me Not A&E as part
of a campaign to help people find the right NHS service for them this summer.
The Choose Me Not A&E campaign aims to provide people with vital information
about which health care service is right for the symptoms they have. Dozens of
people every month attend A&E at King's Lynn's Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH)
but are sent home requiring no treatment. Others who wait for hours could receive
more appropriate treatment closer to home, at pharmacies, local GP surgeries, or
via the 111 service. The campaign is being led by West Norfolk Clinical
Commissioning Group (WNCCG) and Wisbech Local Commissioning Group, in
collaboration with the QEH. Dr Sue Crossman, Chief Officer of WNCCG, said:
During the summer months visitors flock to this area to enjoy the coastal resorts
and beautiful countryside. To ensure that both locals and visitors can always
access the NHS services they needwe want to encourage everyone to stop and
think before going to A&E. A&E is there for life-threatening emergencies such as
loss of consciousness, suspected heart attacks, breathing difficulties, or severe
bleeding that cannot be stopped. If it is not a serious medical emergency, A&E is
not the right choice. Clive Walsh, Chief Operating Officer at the Queen Elizabeth
Hospital, said: People attending A&E who could obtain care elsewhere put undue
pressure on both the department and the hospital as a whole. On many occasions
it would have been better for the patient and the hospital if they sought treatment
from a more appropriate service. We want our staff to concentrate on those staff
who really Terry Hicks, West Norfolk senior locality manager for the East of
England Ambulance Service (EEAST), said: In Norfolk our 111 service can
provide help and advice on a wide range of health conditions. Please only use
999 or A&E in an emergency - such if someone has collapsed and isn't breathing
as if you arrive at A&E by ambulance you will still have to wait unless your
condition is urgent. Make use of the great support out there from 111, GPs and
pharmacists; they will get you the help you need and save you time.
Choose Me Not A&E launched across West Norfolk and Wisbech on Monday,
June 15 and will run until the end of August. Local people, as well as
holidaymakers and tourists will be given information about summer health issues
and where to go for help in the area. The message will be plain for all to see and
hear, with advertising at train stations and bus stops, a billboard in West Street,
Wisbech, and adverts on local radio station KL.FM. NHS staff will also be out and
about in King's Lynn to help spread the message. Choose Me Not A&E leaflets
providing advice about summer health issues and where to go for help in the area
will be readily available, and posters promoting the NHS 111 service and
pharmacies will be displayed in GP surgeries, pharmacies and local groups and
organisations.
Tourists staying at local holiday parks will be able to pick up a pamphlet
containing summer health advice and details of local services and useful
numbers.

CENTRE

BACKACHE
Backache is common, often coming
on suddenly with excruciating pain.
However, seeing the doctor
immediately is unlikely to help. Pain
in a leg is common and is due to
sciatica.
Take adequate painkilling medication
such as paracetamol and ibuprofen.
Rest for up to 24 hours, but then be as
active as you can to mobilise and
strengthen your back, returning to
work as soon as possible. Prolonged
rest can cause further damage.
When to see the doctor
If backache fails to improve
after two weeks
If you have difficulty controlling
bladder or bowels
If you have weakness or
numbness of a leg

Congham Parish Council is seeking two further Parish Councillors.

letter to the Parish Council, explaining how you can assist in supporting the Parish

St Botolphs church urgently needs some volunteers to join the vacuuming roster.
The congregation of regular users is now very small and many are quite frail. The
church serves an important community role as a place to get christened or
married or buried...or just to come and pray when life gets tough .So I am hoping
that a few people will contact me...the more people volunteer the less each
individual has to do ! ! I usually spend about 1-1.5 hrs vacuuming the carpet and
any area that looks particularly scruffy. If this is shared between 12 people it
means that you are only doing it once every 3 months.

OWLS
June 24th saw us lunching at Pearl River in Kings Lynn. It was so nice to
welcome Wallace and Dorothy. Brenda and Peter had fun introducing Dorothy ,
who had never eaten Chinese food before in her life to some good basic
Chinese cuisine. We did the "Banquet " [all you can eat] menu for 16/head,
proud......chicken with various sauces including pineapple, cashews,
mushrooms...prawns and the sticky pork spare ribs. I always like duck and
cucumber pancakes with that tasty dark sauce. We had nearly eaten enough by
the time the mains arrived, but a brave effort saw the umpteen dishes cleared of
almost everything. Dorothy is now keen to try some more foreign food..so we will
have to make some more exotic choices in the next few months. Come and join
us ! I have marked Weds July 15 at Knights Hill 12 midday and Weds August
12th at the 3 Horseshoes at Roydon for future OWLS lunches.

QEH MATTERS
The CQC visited the hospital in June. It will be some weeks before they get the initial
report and I expect there will be a press release some time before I can put it in the
magazine. The Trust hope they have done enough to get out of Special Measures but
know there is still work to be done.
Windsor Ward, the specialist frailty ward, is now fully operational and patient
feedback has been good. They must now continue with their focus on frail elderly
care, striving to introduce further improvements that lead to excellence in the service
that they are able to offer to this vulnerable and large patient group.
In June the hospital joined the national 'Hello my name is' campaign. The
campaign was founded by Kate Granger, a doctor but also a terminally ill cancer
patient, who, through her treatment noted that many hospital staff often do not take
the time to introduce themselves. The aim is to further ensure patients feel welcome
and personally recognise those caring for them. Staff are expected to introduce
themselves to patients and visitors to make patient experience the best it can be.
Nursing staff numbers have improved since January 2013. Unregistered nursing
staff has gone from 260 to 370 while registered nursing staff has gone from 750 to
825. If ever you are in hospital or visiting, I hope this change is noticeable and you
feel you are getting the attention you require.
Dementia patients at the QE are the first in Norfolk to benefit from specialist software
and tablet computers. Dementia patients often feel confused when they come into
hospital and are at risk of further deterioration. The computers are being used to
relieve distress and help dementia patients feel at home by uploading family photos
and notes to bring memories to life.
'Your Local Paper' has been supporting the appeal for the new wheelchairs. They
have raised enough for 22 out of the 30 chairs available. They appear to be well used
and look much smarter than the older chairs, though you do have to use a 1 coin to
free them.
An apprentice co-ordinator at QEH has won a regional award in the Business Impact
Inspiration Awards for businesses with over 50 employees. Her role is to ensure that
apprentices have the chance to gain vital skills and experience which will help them
in their working life. She now goes to the finals in London in July. Apprentices are an
important section of staff at the QE and can train in various trades from admin staff to
electricians.
The next Governors' Council meeting will be the Annual Meeting on 23rd July at Lynn
Sport. Members of the public are warmly welcomed. Please phone 01553 613142 if
you wish to attend.

Holly Meadows School

As the end of the year approaches, we have a number of exciting opportunities for
the children planned: trips to the seaside, sports day, cycling proficiency training, end
of year parties an action packed curriculum and a promise of a revisit from Ofsted
to add to the fun! Throughout the year we strive to prepare the children for the exciting
but potentially dangerous world we live in, a part of our role that we consider to be
vitally important. We also try to reach out to our community and invite in willing
visitors to share their knowledge and experience with the children. Meeting both of
these aspects, we have been working with Simon Mace from Sibelco to make sure
that the children are aware of the hazards of the former quarrying sites locally,
particularly Bawsey. Simon met with Columbus Class and explained about the
danger of swimming in the lakes. The pupils had to write an article about his message
and one piece of writing was so impressive that I felt it was worthy of printing and
sharing with the local community who keep in touch through this publication. Daniel
Beadle is just one of our 15 successful pupils who are moving on to Springwood High
School. He is a clever young man who is a thinker. He finds writing a challenge, it
takes him a long time but he makes careful word choices to tell us about his chosen
theme. Please read this and see what you think.
Why not Bawsey? Summer is upon us and the temptation to swim at Bawsey is at its
highest. As you might know, 18 months ago, two people tragically drowned on the
same day because of the depth.
You might not know but Bawsey used to be a quarry/mining site. The company who
owns the site, Sibelco has had reports of people diving and swimming in Bawsey
Pits. Sadly, most were teenagers, if you have a teenager in your household please
warn them of this message and tell them it is not a laughing matter.
Sibelco is urging people not to go near the water. Please encourage people who are
swimming to stop because they are putting their lives in danger. Thank you for
reading my message. Daniel Beadle, Year 6, Holly Meadows School.
I would like to congratulate Daniel on this clear and concise message to keep us all
safe. Our thanks go to Simon Mace for taking the time to come and share his
knowledge with the pupils. I am sure he will feel it was worthwhile when he reads this
entry; his message got through very clearly so many more people will now have
had the same message by reading Daniel's work and if one of those people is saved
from drowning or injury, then it was certainly worth it.
We have been very proud to see the Year 6s progressing through this year; they have
been a pleasure to work with and we know that they will go on to do very well in the
next phase of their education. We wish them lots of good luck and look forward to
hearing about how well they settle in. Thank you to the staff who have helped them
along the way to achieve their very best.
Also, thank you to everyone who has freely given their time to the school over the
past year. We value each and every one of you and I know the children are delighted
to be able to work with you whether gardening, reading or making beautiful treasures

The Last Word

I would like to share a recent experience of travelling with a large group of
Chinese friends in Turkey. We were visiting all the sites of the seven churches
mentioned in the book of the Revelation in the Bible.
My wife and I were the only non-Chinese on the trip, so we could enjoy observing
the Chinese culture. Most were young people from Mainland China rather than
Hong Kong. The obvious features were easy to accept and in many ways
endearing. You need to raise your voice a bit if you want to be heard, for Chinese
conversation is on the whole noisy and mixed with plenty of laughter. If you are on
a diet you will be tempted to eat lots, for the Chinese love food and plenty of it.
They don't like to miss an opportunity to take pictures, sharing them with all their
friends through the social platform: www.wechat.com If you like retail therapy,
then you will feel at home for the Chinese are great shoppers. If you are a loner,
then life might be a trial for you, for the Chinese are very much community,
relationships being the essence of their way of life.
Now I imagine for most of us none of those features would spoil a pilgrimage, if
that were the right word to use, to visit the historic sites of the first churches in
Asia Minor started long before the Turks arrived from Central Asia. As we had a
Turkish guide on the tour, who was anxious to show us some of the wonderful
craftsmanship of his people, we saw something of his culture as a contrast. What
wonderful leather coats modelled on the catwalk, and beautiful carpets to walk on
in bare feet for feeling their softness. These ancient crafts were shown us with
justifiable pleasure and care for a prosperous cottage industry. Turkey cuisine is
also exceedingly good, so Chinese and Turkish friends tucked in together with
great enjoyment!
Now the culture of different peoples is not all endearing, nor easy to embrace. It is
easy to be prejudiced and see one's own culture as being superior to another's.
As a general rule, one culture is not better than another, just different. Of course
where there has been a bad history between different peoples, it is less easy to
respond to new arrivals in the community. But to welcome strangers and show
hospitality is an ancient custom understood by peoples from all cultures, and it is
well worth accepting any invitation that comes your way to travel with others
whatever their culture. How else can nations come together? We will view
Turkey's wish to join the European Union a little differently from now on. Who's for
a nice cup of Turkish coffee at the new coffee shop on Kings Lynn High Street?
