Hope is the thing with feathers-

By Emily Dickenson

'Hope' is the thing with feathers

That perches in the soul
And sings the tune without the words
And never stopsat all
And sweetestin the Galeis heard
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm
I've heard it in the chillest land
And on the strangest Sea
Yet, never, in Extremity,
It asked a crumbof Me.
1. Circle metaphors and similes, underline repetition, double underline
personification.
2. What is Emily Dickenson trying to tell us about hope?
3. After reading these two poems and learning so much about the
Holocaust, what positive ideas or feelings can we learn?
4. Finish the message of the mother to the son in the first poem. What do
you think she had to say?
5. Write your own six line poem about hope that includes at least one
literary device. First decide on what message you want to send and
then begin writing. Your message can be positive or negative.
