Chinas Military

By Tanner Shannon & Raven Letts

Current status
Over the past two decades, China's People's Liberation Army has transformed itself
from a large but antiquated force into a capable, modern military. Its technology and
operational proficiency still lag behind those of the United States, but it has rapidly
narrowed the gap. China enjoys the advantage of proximity in most plausible conflict
scenarios, and geographical advantage would likely neutralize many U.S. military
strengths.

Statistical Comparisons
Total health spending accounted for 5.4% of GDP in China in 2012,
well below the OECD average of 9.3%. Health spending as a share of
GDP among OECD countries is highest in the United States, which
spent 16.9% of its GDP on health in 2012.

Chinas Current stance

Despite China's long-standing diplomatic principle of non-intervention in the internal
affairs of other states, Beijing cannot completely control its citizens' involvement in
terrorist activities. Whether China likes it or not, it is being drawn into the conflict
against ISIS. China's state media recently reported that three Chinese ISIS militants
were executed in 2014 following their attempted desertion from the terrorist
organization.

China and US relationship

Since 1949, U.S.-Sino relations have evolved from tense standoffs to
a complex mix of intensifying diplomacy, growing international
rivalry, and increasingly intertwined economies.

technology influenced
In recent decades science and technology have developed rapidly in China. The
Chinese government has placed emphasis through funding, reform, and societal status
on science and technology as a fundamental part of the socio-economic development of
the country as well as for national prestige. China has made rapid advances in areas
such as education, infrastructure, high-tech manufacturing, academic publishing,
patents, and commercial applications and is now in some areas and by some measures
a world leader.
