GradingPhilosophy

Afterthisweek'slessons,Ihaverealizedwhatabigpartgradesandgradingcanimpact yourclassroom.Aclassroomsgradingphilosophyplaysanimportantroleinyourteaching, studentslearning,behaviors,workethic,classroommanagementandinthefuture,couldaffect yourpayasateacher.Asaclasswelearnedabout pointbasedgradingandstandardsbased learning,bothofthesegradingsystemshavepositivesandnegativestothem.Ifeelthata standardsbasedgradingsystemwouldworkbestforhonorsorAPclassesbecausestudentsare goingtohavetogoaboveandbeyondthetraditionalcoursesandthisgradingsystemwould showthosestudentswheretheirstrengthsandweaknessesare.Howeverinatraditionalclass,I feelthepointbasedgradingsystemwouldworkbest. Withgrading,Ibelieveateacherhasthepowerovercontrollingastudent'sgrades. Teachersareabletodecidehowmucheachassignmentisworthandhowmucheachcategory suchas,tests,quizzes,assignmentsandparticipationisweighed.Justasteachersshouldbein control,ofcourseaportionisalsointhecontrolofthestudentsandthededicationandworkthey actuallyputintotheirassignmentsandtimespentstudyingfortests.Teachersshouldbeableto lookatastudentsoutsidesituationsandjudgewhethertheybelieveastudentsshouldbegranted extracreditpoints.Itypicallydon'tagreewithextracreditpointunlessitsastudentcompletesall oftheassignedprojectsthendoessomethinggoingaboveandbeyondwhatwasassignment. Withthisbeingsaid,thisisareasonwhyIagreewithpointbasedgradingbecauseitgives teacherstheabilitytoworkextracreditpointsintothegradebook. Withtestsandquizes,Ibelievestudentsshouldbeabletoretakethemifthestudentisn't satisfiedwiththeirscore.Withthatbeingsaid,Iwouldpresentexceptionstotestandquiz retakes.IwouldallowmystudentstomakeuptheirtestsonlyiftheyhadreceivedaCorhigher ontheiroriginalscore.OnlyallowingstudentswithaCorhighertoretaketheirtestsandquizzes showsmethatthosestudentsdidcomprehendamajorityofwhatwasbeingtaughtbutmayhave justneededtounderstandalittleofthecontent.StudentswhohadreceivedascorelessthanaC wouldnotbeabletoretakeormakeupthatscore.Thiswouldbetherulebecausethosestudents withalowerscorehavedemonstratedthattheychoosenottolistenand/orparticipateinclass. Gradesarealargeparttoateacher'sclassroommanagement.Gradescaninfluenceclass managementbecausethosestudentswhoarestrivingtowardsthatAintheclasswillbemore attentiveinlecturesthanthestudentswhodon'tcareaboutthegradetheyaregoingtoreceive.It canalsoimpactyourclassroommanagementbecauseyou,astheteachercangiveextra assignmentsyoufeelareeasierforallstudentsandwillgivethemacoupleofextrapoints towardstheirfinalgrade.Iwouldn'twantmyclasstobeextremelydifficultforstudentstogeta goodgradebut,IwouldwantmyclasstohavestudentswhoaregoingtoworkhardforthatAin theclass.
