LEVEL 3 QUIZ # 1 (Answer Key)

1. The figure below is formed by placing the corner of each square at the center of another of another identical
square. The perimeter of each square is 64 cm. Find the area of the figure made up of the overlapped
squares.

Solution:
Length of 1 side of square 64 4 = 16 cm
Length of 1 side of the small square 16 2 = 8
Area of 1 small square 8 8 = 64 cm2
Area of the figure 64 10 = 640 cm2
The area of the figure is 640 cm2.
2. The following figure is made of quadrants and semicircles drawn inside a square. Find the total shaded area.
Give your correct answer to the nearest whole number.

6 6 56.5 cm 2
Area of semicircle 2
(correct to 1 decimal place)
Total shaded area = 113.1 2 + (113.1 56.5) 2
= 339 cm2. (correct to nearest whole number)
3. The diagram below shows a cube of edge 9 cm. A smaller cube of edge 3 cm is removed from one of its
corners as shown. Find the surface area of the remaining block.

Solution:
Surface area of normal face = 9 9 = 81 cm2
Note that even when the smaller cube is removed, it does not affect the surface area of the faces.
Total surface area of remaining block = 81 6 = 486 cm2.
