Length of 1 side of the small square 16 2 = 8

Solution:
Surface area of normal face = 9 9 = 81 cm2
Note that even when the smaller cube is removed, it does not affect the surface area of the faces.
Total surface area of remaining block = 81 6 = 486 cm2.
