Beowulf is seeking glory by offering to defeat the monster Grendel who has been terrorizing the kingdom of King Hrothgar. Grendel fears God's power and protection of the king, which is why he has not attacked the king directly. Grendel is described as a mysterious fiend who lives in the marshes rather than in hell. He feeds on the people of the kingdom by sneaking in and killing thirty men in their beds. Grendel is born from Cain in biblical stories, making him an outcast as Cain's descendant who was punished by God for killing his brother Abel.

Like in Greek Mythology Beowulfs powers exceeded those from a regular man.

How did this piece of information enhance my
understanding of the poem? It gives understanding on how strong Beowulf is, the Poem explains how Beowulf drove five great giants into chains, and chased all of that race from the earth.
This text shows how afraid Grendel was of the King.
Grendel never dared to hurt the king or touch him, for he believed that God protected him.
From this you could infer that he is seeking Glory and
his willing to risk his life to save the people and king from the evil by any means possible.
It was difficult to understand in the beginning, because I
had no knowledge of what fiend meant. Once I figured it out, it helped me understand the meaning behind Grendels appearance. I learned that hes a decedent of Cain and hes more like a demon that lives on earth. Knowing where the poem takes place is very important. It gives understanding on where the story comes from and what it relates to.

The monsters thoughts were as
quick as his greed or his claws: he slipped through the door and there in the silence snatched up thirty men, smashed them unknowing in their beds, and ran out with their bodies, the blood dripping behind him, back to his lair, delighted with his nights slaughter. Conceived by a pair of those monsters Born Of Cain, murderous creatures banished By God, punished forever for the crime Of Abels death.
This shows how Grendel is an outcast in the kingdom,
hes not welcome into the hall were everyone drinks and eats. He takes it out on them while they sleep, he satisfies his hunger by feeding off of them.
It portrays the relationship between the Poem and the
Story of Abel and Cane found in the book of Genesis in the Bible. It gives understanding on how Grendel and his descendants came to be.
