Date: Monday April 28th

Class: Sec 4, section 404
Time: 4th period
School: Emile Legault
Duration: 75 minutes
By the end of this lesson, the students will be able to:
- By the end of this lesson I would like for the students to
come up with solutions to the problems I have given them.
Students will work in groups of 3-4 to present to the class
their solution. This will be linked to the next lesson, where
we will be doing a reading comprehension in their "Match
Point" book.
The breakdown of the assignment:
- We will begin the lesson by introducing the topic and
ourselves. The topic we will covering in today's class is "The
not so perfect vacation". First I will begin by explaining who I
am and what I will be doing in their class for the next three
weeks. We will watch a short youtube clip based on a news
clip called cruise nightmares
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aD-m2-iYYdg. I will play
the clip twice, prior they will see the initial discussion
questions, then before the second viewing I will remind
them again what they are, and finally we will discuss the
clip and the questions. Next, I will be asking "Have you ever
been on a vacation, or away from home and it did not go as
planned?". First I will ask students to put this in other wordsexample: did something go wrong, something bad
happened etc. I will ask that students who would like to
answer this question just say their name before so I can try
to learn as many names as possible. Then after the students
have answered, I will give the instructions for the activity we
will do. After I have given the instructions we will split up
into groups. Each group will get 9 written up vacations, with
something that has gone wrong. Students will have to work
together to figure out a solution to each problem. As
individuals, they have to write out the summarized solution
from each problem (they will have 9 solutions). After the
groups have come to a consensus for each problem,
students will split up into pairs. These pairs will choose one
of the nine problems and write a 1 page, double spaced
dialogue of two characters in the situation.

Individual Solution
Group Consensus
Situation 1: Passport

in a group hostel, you notice your
passport seems to be missing. Your
flight home is next week, and you
cannot leave without it. What do you
do?
Situation 2:Forgot money
After high school you decide to book
an all inclusive trip with friends to
Cuba. All your meals are paid for
except three dinners. When you arrive
at the hotel, you realize you did not
bring money, debit, nor credit cards.
Your friends only brought a limited
amount of money. What do you do?
Situation 3:Double booked hotel
room
You are going to visit your great aunt
in Ireland, and have chosen to stay at
the hotel in the city for three nights
before going to stay with her in the
country. The drive is about five hours
away. When you get to the hotel, you
find out that your room has been
booked by other people who are
staying for two weeks. What do you
do?
Situation 4:Forgot to book hotel
room
You and your six best friends decide
to travel around Canada. Each one of
you is in charge of a destination; you
are in charge of Vancouver. The group
arrives in Vancouver around 1 am,
and are all excited to get some sleep.
You soon realize that you forgot to

book a hotel room, and the hotel

closest to you is full. What do you do?

Situation 5:Food poisoning

Your mom is so proud of you for doing
well in English, she decides to take
you to Disney World. The first day you
are there you beg your mom to try
deep fried steak. Your mom knows it
is not a good idea, however since you
are on vacation she allows you.
Unfortunately you get food poisoning
because the meat was not cooked
properly. What do you do?
Situation 6: Lost luggage
It is your grandma's 85th birthday in
Honolulu, Hawaii. Everyone is so
excited for the family reunion and the
party that is planned. When getting
off the plane and waiting for your
luggage, you realize that your
suitcase is not there. After speaking
to the airport customer service, you
have been informed that your
suitcase is on the wrong plane. What
do you do?
Situation 7: Car breaks down
Your cousin just had her first child and
your family decides to road trip to
New York to go meet the new member
of the family. After four hours of
driving, the car breaks down in the
middle of the high way. What do you
do?
Situation 8: Cancelled flight
You have saved up all school year to
go visit your best friend who sadly
moved to Australia. Your first flight is
from Montreal to Los Angeles, and
then Los Angeles to Sydney, Australia.
Your flight from Los Angeles to Sydney
gets cancelled, and you can only get
the next flight which is three days

later. What do you do?

Situation 9: Bad weather
Your cousins are all going to Jamaica,
and have invited you. This is your first

excited. Unfortunately none of you
