E-publishing

Abstract
How had this technology impacted us and publishing world? Is there any a
disadvantage or just advantages to this technology? How does it impact exchange of
information in scientific community? How does it impact the quality of published articles?
How does it impact journals and journals articles? E-publishing had become part of our daily
lives, we encounter it on a daily basis. Two researches have been conducted in order to bring
light to this question. First one offered us overall review on electronic publishing, how its
increased exchange of information in the scientific community, and discusses qualifications
for e-publishing in electronic venues. Second research is about how e-publishing impacted
journals and journal articles.

Introduction
In the rush to a digital information world we rarely pause to consider the long-term
effects on libraries, scholars, and students. 'E-Publishing' is refer to "electronic commerce in
digital goods and services that are intended for consumption by the human senses".1
Electronic mail (E-mail), compact disc read only memory (CD-ROM), and electronic journals
(E-journals; online journals) are common everyday terms that only originated in the 1980s.2
Due to increasingly globalization and digitalization of out era, we encounter these terms on a
daily basis. In last 20 years e-publishing have changed our lives in way we think, talk and act.
One of the reasons why we call the era we now live in Information era is partly because epublishing. . Electronic publishing is an encompassing term for a variety of digitally produced
materials such as bulletin boards, newsgroups, mailing lists, CD-ROM based media, and
websites.3 E-publishing is also used for communication via messaging and networking. Big
issue about e-publishing is the quality of published content, there is allot of space for
uneducated, or not properly educated peoples to publish articles and books. There are many
advantages of electronic published journals and books such as accessibility and usability. Low
cost of publishing e-journals and e-books lead to rapid growth of e-publishing. There are
some disadvantages like misconduct and security issues.

Methodology
Researches have been conducted to show overview of e-publishing, and its impact
on journals and journalists. E-publishing is a big step to globalisation and digitalisation of our
era. Low price of publishing increased availability through world, bringing informations and
education closer to peoples, esspecialy to the third world countries. E-published journals and
books are considered nature-friendly, saves forrests. Some opponents of e-publishing says that
book or journal that we aquired isnt physically there, its just bits ad bytes, arguing existence
of e-books in physical form. On the other hand there is always a group of people who

preferred solid printed books, smell of paper etc. There are many devices with which we can
acquire e-journals, or e-books such as computer, handheld devices such as tablet, phones and
e-book readers. From about the end of the 1970s, journal-publishing corporations utilised
their multiple monopolies to achieve extraordinary profitability. Between the mid-1980s and
2002, the average price of a journal rose by 215% and that of science journals increased by
nearly 6004. By 2000, the largest publisher, Reed Elsevier, was making annual profits of US$
290million, with margins of nearly 40% on its core journals business (Gooden et al. 2002).
In a recent survey of American research libraries, Wiley, Elsevier and Springer 'Big Deals' had
achieved over 70% market penetration, and Blackwell's 60% 5. 565 journals catalogued in
April 2007, 102 (18%) were eJournals, and a further 423 (75%) were available in both print
and electronic forms6. Another approach publishers have tried is trials of the 'author pays'
approach As a result, the fees demanded for 'author pays' publishing by for-profit publishers
are far higher than those required by not-for-profit publishers who use the same model around US$ 3,500 cf. US$ 1,750 or US$ 750 - depending on the model used7.
Is there any disadvantages of e-publishing that couldnt be solved? Is there a way to make eublishing more accurate and correct? From the research we see that e-publishing is helpful to
journalist, as well as general population.
Conclusion
With growth of internet and hyperconnectivity e-publishing brings us many
advantages in a way of cheap access to information, books, and journal articles witch are
unavailable to some people in world. From research we see uprising profit from e-published
articles and books. Allot of printed magazines with printed editions have online editions also.
It lowered price of books and magazines. One of disadvantages in find in this research is that
we need to have some sort of computer, or a handheld device to access variety of e-boos and
e-articles. Many peoples around the world do not have access to these appliances, due to
poverty. More disadvantages are the quality of published content, there are no regulations on
e-publishing, literally everyone could publish e-books, or magazine without any credentials.
There is also allot of space for plagiarism.
