Thebookisonethestudentshavebeenreadinginclass.Theyarealreadyintroduced
tothemaincharactersandsettingofthebook,andthechapterwewillreadisthenextinthe
sequence.PredictionisaSOLthatthestudentsshouldreachin2ndgrade.Wehaveinformally
usedpredictioningroupreadaloudsalready,andthestudentshaveshownthattheyknowthe
ideaofpredicting,butIamunsureofhowdeeptheirpredictionskillsgo.

Assessment:
Wewillreviewasaclasswhathashappenedsofarinthestory.Iwillthenintroducethetitleof
thenextchapter.Thestudentswillwritedowntheirindividualpredictionsonahalfsheetof
paper.Thestudentswillthendiscussattheirtablestheirideasandtelleachotherwhatprior
knowledgetheyareusingasevidencetobackuptheirprediction.Iwillaskforthegroupsto
eachshareoneofthepredictionsandIwillrecordthem.Iwillthencollectthehalfsheets.We
willgatherasawholegrouptotherugtoreadythechapter.Asweread,ifoneofthegroup
predictionsisconfirmedordenied,wewillpauseandbrieflytalkaboutitandtheevidence
presented,andreviseourpredictionsifnecessary.Afterwefinishthechapter,wewillbriefly
discusshowourknowledgeofthecharactersandthestoryhelpeduswithourpredictionstoday.
Thenthestudentswillreturntotheirseatsandwritedownasummaryofthechapter,and
includeiftheirpredictionwasrightorwrong.

Procedure:
1. Haveworksheetsalreadyprintedoutandslidereadytobeprojected.
2. Reintroducethebookbyshowingthecoverandsayingthetitleofthebook.Leada
discussiononwhathasalreadyhappenedinthebookthusfar...(whoarethemain
characters,setting,plotsummary)
3. Readthetitleofthenextchapter
4. Havethestudentswritedownapredictionforwhattheythinkwillhappeninthenext
chapter

helpthestrugglingreaderswithprocessingthecontentofthelesson.Therearefourstudents
whowillneedmoreindividualattentiononvoicingtheirpredictionsonpaper.Ialongwiththeir
tablemateswillprovideassistanceinhavingthemvoicetheirpredictions,andhelpthemtoput
whattheysaidonpaper.IhavetwostudentswhoIanticipatewillfinishveryquickly,andIwill
challengethemtohelptheirclassmatesgenerateideas.
