Description
Climate change researchers study the effects on ecosystems caused by the changing
climate. They research and analyze policy developments related to climate change and
make climate-related recommendations for actions such as legislation, awareness
campaigns, or fundraising approaches. They may also do outreach education activities and

Work Environment
Most climate change researchers work for federal, state, or local governments, or private
consulting firms that may work with government or private industry. Climate change
researchers work in offices and laboratories. Some may spend time in the field gathering
data and monitoring environmental conditions firsthand. Fieldwork can be physically
demanding in all types of weather.

Main Duties

Gather and review climate-related studies from government agencies, research


laboratories and other organizations.
Present climate-related information at public interest, governmental or other
meetings.
Write reports or academic papers to communicate findings of climate-related studies.

Prepare study reports, testimonies or other written materials to inform government or


environmental groups on environmental issues such as climate change.
Analyze climate-related research findings to inform legislators, regulatory agencies or
other stakeholders.
Provide analytical support for policy briefs related to renewable energy, energy
efficiency or climate change.
Promote initiatives to mitigate climate change with government or environmental
groups.
Make legislative recommendations related environmental management based on
climate change policies, principles, programs, and processes.
Develop educational or outreach programs on the environment or climate change.
Review existing policies or legislation to identify environmental impacts.

of scientific data. They must consider all possible methods and solutions in their
analyses.
Communication skills. Climate change researchers may need to present and explain
their findings and write technical reports.
Interpersonal skills. Climate change researchers typically work on teams with

effectively to achieve their goals.
