Pre-Lab Questions:

1) What is the difference between physical and chemical properties?

Physical properties has to do with the color and weight of the substance. Chemical has to do
with the identity of it.

2) What is the difference between quantitative values and qualitative values?

Quantitative is numerical data, qualitative is not.

3) What is the difference between intensive physical properties and extensive physical
properties?
Intensive is a property that depends on the type of matter in a sample, not the amount.
Extensive is a property that depends on the amount of matter in the sample

4) How is this lab going to be an example of taking quantitative data?

Were testing to find the number of something.

5) Find a picture of Acetyl Salicylic Acid on-line and insert it.

6) What is another name for Acetyl Salicylic Acid?

Aspirin

Testing for Purity of Aspirin:

1) Purpose of the lab:
To test the physical and chemical property of ASA, Salicylic acid, and our acid sample.

2) List of materials:
Buret clamp
Ring stand
Iron ring
mineral oil
Wire screen
Slit stopper
Thermometer with tube
Thermometer
Rubber band
Melting point tube
ASA
Salicylic acid
My acid sample
3) Summary of the procedure steps (in your own words)
1. Place open end of melting point capillary tube into some of the solid
2. Invert tube and tap gently until 2cm of sample is at the bottom
3. Fill three tubes each of ASA, SA, and your sample
4. Use rubber band to attach a filled melting point tube to your thermometer
5. Attach tube so that it can be submerged in mineral oil (rubber band above oil
line)
6. Assemble heating apparatus
7. Use a low flame to heat mineral oil slowly, watch melting point tube to observe
temperature at which sample melts
8. Record temp at which solid sample begins to melt
9. Run three trials for each type of substance
4) Create a data table (make sure you include units that you will be using)

#7-13
7. So one carbon atom can form a single covalent bond with four hydrogen atoms
8. It can be arranged in a straight chain or in a chain that has branches
9. The nonpolar molecules are not attracted to the polar water molecules

(10-13 is done on my worksheet)

5) Analysis: (we will do this part after when the lab is done)

1. What did you find out about your aspirin from this experiment?
Our aspirin differed from the other test answers.
2. How did you do the experiment?
We did the experiment as we were meant to, however we were not able to finish it.
3. Any possible human errors? What were they and how did they impact your results?
Our human errors could have been through our setup (we might have did something wrong).
They impacted our result by us not knowing whether or not it is pure.
4. How could you modify your experiment to be more accurate?
We could have done more test and have not been so rushed on our tests.
5. Which chemical should show similar results to your aspirin? Why or why not?
If we wanted our sample to be pure, it should have been compared to A.S.A.
6. Is this experiment conclusive to determine whether your sample is pure aspirin? Why or why
not?
It is conclusive in the fact that we have found it to not be pure aspirin.
