Peer Mediation

Proposal
By: Helens Class

WHY THIS PROJECT?

The project we have been working on this quarter has been on conflict
and peer mediation
So we can have a better understand of conflict and mediation.

WHAT IS PEER MEDIATION?

Peer mediation is when youth solves problems between their peers.
Coordinated by an adult, peer mediation sessions are successful by
95%.
Peer mediation gives students the chance to solve their own problems.

WHY OUR ADVISORY

We are responsible enough to mediate our own
problems
The things we say
The things we do
The things we think about

OUR GOALS FOR PEER MEDIATION AT THE WS

Conflicts will be reduced by 15 percent in the first 3 months.
We will have students asking for mediations.
Students will develop more leadership skills
Students will gain problem solving skills across the school.
We will get training for ourselves.
We will get trained enough so that we can train other students.
Students will stay in class more.
Students wont miss important assignments.
Students will learn valuable cooperation skills.

BENEFITS OF PEER MEDIATION

Students have the chance to develop leadership and communication skills.
Students can have a positive influence on their peers.
Students become more active in the problem solving process.
Staff spends less time breaking up fights, and spend more time teaching.
It helps reduce tension between staff and students
The overall school climate improves through student/staff relationships.

WHO ARE PEER MEDIATORS?

Anyone who wants to help out with student problems and conflict within
the school.
Basically, students solve or help solve their peers problems between
them and others.
Students that are trained to handle other students situation/problems to
get a better outcome.
Also, in order for this to work some students must be able to relate to the
other students for a equal field.
In cases of student vs teacher it would still have to be done in a
professional manner.

WHO IS A PEER MEDIATION COORDINATOR?

.

Like a coach for a basketball team, a conductor of a

orchestra.
A coordinator oversees all activities throughout the
peer mediation sessions as well as records &
collection of data.
Also, the coordinator makes sure that a peer
mediation session is a success.

IS PEER MEDIATION A GOOD FIT FOR US?

We did a survey in the Workshop School that involved 12
teachers and 90 students. In our survey, we learned that
there is a lot of conflict that happens at the Workshop School.
Both students and teachers say that they see or hear about
conflicts every day. Our results show that conflicts happen
mainly in school.

When Does Conflict Occur?

We learned that there is a lot of conflict that happens at the Workshop School.
Both students and teachers say that they see or hear about conflicts that are
happening everyday.
43% say they see conflict in school
34% say they see conflict both outside and in school.

WHAT KINDS OF CONFLICT OCCURS AT THE

WORKSHOP SCHOOL?
56.3% of students said that the greatest cause of conflict is arguments with
their friends.
Half of students say that conflicts start with mainly peers inside of school.

WHAT KIND OF STRESS DO STUDENTS HAVE?

Toxic stress helps us understand what students may be going through at the WS.
We learned that small children who experience violence in their community, in their
home, or other, can affect how they act in school.
The stress system in our body is active for long periods and that can be dangerous.
ACE is a test to help understand the amount of stress they are going through.
Toxic stress can damage a person's social life. The person you may see in the shadows
or never speak at all or runs away in any interaction
This is important to understand for peer mediation because some students here may
have toxic stress and us, the future mediators can help and give a good impact on
the student.

Number Of Conflicts In Our School

75% of teachers see 2 - 5 or more conflicts a day.

Cause Of Conflicts
We asked students and teachers what they thought the second greatest causes of
conflict in our school is and they said it is disagreements over work, which means
they are taking away from valuable learning time.

Students Results
Over 75% of students say they see 1 - 3 conflicts a day.
