Although all designers owe a debt to the craftspeople who went before, as far as possible these motifs are original. Sometimes I've taken a traditional motif and given it a little twist, so yes, there is a granny square, but it has a four-petal flower in the center. There are incredibly simple, beginner’s-style motifs—just little shapes in the most obvious stitches—but these motifs are designed to unlock your creativity when you play with colors and assemble them to make pictures or patchwork designs. There are designs based on stitch patterns, but worked in the round or turned into a square, such as the shell-edged flower medallion (page 39) or the chevron pattern waves motif (page 74). There are motifs that play with different techniques —they are not difficult, but maybe have an unusual construction, such as the Celtic knot and bow designs (pages 63, 84). There are animal picture designs, all in easy-to-work stitches but again, totally original, along with flowers, too—it seemed that every time | played around with yarn and a hook, another flower grew to create a whole garden of crocheted blooms (pages 6-23). Oh, and 4 INTRODUCTION there's an alphabet (pages 42-53) —crochet letters for you to appliqué on fabric, or on plain crochet squares to add initials or names to garments, or to make banners or blankets. Finally, there's a collection of 50 projects and ideas for fun items to make with the motifs (see pages 106-135). Some are quick to make, whereas others are slower but satisfying. You can work them as shown, or use the ideas as a springboard for developing and creating your own designs. I've also included a quick reminder of all the techniques you'll need to work basic crochet stitches and join the motifs—see the instructions on pages 136-143. Whatever your level of abililty, | hope these motifs, blocks, projects, and ideas fire your imagination. And most of all, | hope you enjoy sharing this exploration with me. ‘=MOTIFS flowers melt ‘This tiny three-round motif can be made very quickly.
