early learning behaviors:
Teach/ Prompt/ Reinforce
Evidence
Spanish

In Spanish, Miss Alondra read pequea

mancha and Grufalo. She had 10 copies of the
same book. Children talked about the title of
the book, about being authors and respecting
the books, and how to hold them correctly.
Miss Alondra tried to promote reading
behaviors by showing children how to match
the words with a pointer, remembering how to
match the words with their voice and also
reviewed reading left to right. Alondra
commented some children still dont know the
concept of left to right so it is hard to talk to
them about the concept. They also talked
about bookmarks.
K11
A poster was up in the board and a child said
he couldnt see so a conversation about how
and where to stand when reading started.
Chika chika boom, boom was read to the
class, but the teacher said there are no little
books for that book. Maybe some kinder
teachers have a copy. They also talked about
the use of the pointer to match the voice with
the words.

K10
Children were asked to find some words in a
sentence. They used a book to talk about the
pictures, periods, spaces and exclamation
marks. They also talked about the cover page
and how to turn pages of a book nicely.
Children were encouraged to use complete
sentences.
K9
There is a new boy in the class. He knows
how to read so he brought a book and read it
to his classmates. Several activities were
done with the book and children are starting
to get excited about reading. They will
intentionally work with reading after
vacations, when this student comes back to
share his knowledge.
This class also started to practice shared
reading, first in a big group with certain
books children are familiar with, they started
to match words with voice.

K7
Using sentences in the white board, this class
is practicing to point at words, talking about
capital letters and their use, the use of finger
space, and reading the sentences.
This class also showed the fun palettes they
use after reading a book. They have questions
about the story.
PK5
In this class, they have being really focusing
on developing vocabulary. When talking about
a book, they talk about the spine, the front
and the back cover. Sofi models reading with
children. Children have started to use the
vocabulary when making their own books. The
behavior went from reading to writing.
Children have discovered a pattern, word,

space, word, space on books. Teachers in PK5

talked about the importance of sometimes
making mistakes on purpose to see if children
get them and also to show it is o.k to make
mistakes.

PK4
This class has being practicing voice print
match. They have also emphasized on the
importance of pointing at words when
reading. Some children really get it and are
also using pauses between words. They are
using pocket charts to write sentences. As a
group they are practicing putting words from
poems in order.
N3
This class is making sticks, to teach children
how to follow words in a book.
Question from the teacher: is it ok if they
dont point to words, but only model left to
right?
N2

They have being practicing left to right while

looking at books. They have being reading
books without words, using the pictures as a
reference. They have being talking about the
cover and back page of books and the
importance of taking good care of books.

N1
Children have being noticing the use of
question and exclamation marks in writing.
They are also practicing following the letters
in a book from left to right. Children have
asked about the award golden star some
books have in the cover and now they like
saying it must be a good book if they see the
distinction in the cover page of a book.
