Week in Review: January 25 29

The red poetry duotangs came home on Friday. This weeks poem was Wiggles.
This week in Sound Connections we introduced the sounds for C and B. Some students may make the
c sound as a t instead. Remind them that it is a back of the mouth sound and they need to use their
tongue rather than their teeth. It is amazing to see the progress as students learn how to blend the
sounds into emergent reading skills. Encourage your child to transfer these new skills into their easy to
read Home Reading books.
Thank you for remembering to send back the Home Reading books this week!
I introduced Word Work sorts this week. Our school uses the Words our Way program to help students
with concepts of language such as categorization, word families, digraphs (e.g. sh, th, ch), long vowel
patterns (bossy e, ai, oa) and many more. Of course in Kindergarten we start with concept sorts. The
sort we started this week was about fruits. Ask your child if they can tell you the categories they used
to sort out the pictures.
Thank you to the families that were able to make it out to our POPS night on Wednesday evening. We
had a number of non-fiction and science related stations in our various classrooms. The Canadian Cancer
Society also donated multiple bottles of sunscreen and we drew names for those on Thursday. Next
week we will begin reading through the Snow book that PAC purchased for each child in Kindergarten.
Mayor Don McCormick and Kevin Wilson, the Economic Development Officer for the City of Kimberley,
came to our school on Thursday to speak to our grade level groups about Kimberleys Sun Mine. Mrs.
Sharpe arranged the presentations to connect with our solar energy science projects we are continuing
to work on for the BC Green Games. Ask your child what they learned from Mayor McCormick! Check out
our blog for the full list of questions our Kindergarten classes asked him about!
There were lots of great costumes on Friday! I posted a picture of our class on the blog as well
