Explain why a fraction a/b is equivalent to a fraction (n a)/(n b) by using
visual fraction models, with attention to how the number and size of the
parts differ even though the two fractions themselves are the same size. Use
this principle to recognize and generate equivalent fractions.

Lesson Objective:
Through the use of a Hershey Candy Bar students will be able to work in
groups to understand equivalent fractions.

Formative- Rapid Fire, Swat that
Summative- Hershey Bar Worksheet, exit ticket sticky note
Assessment Modifications:
EL- group work, manipulative (candy bar)
Below Grade Level- group work, manipulative (candy bar)

INTO:
Students come in from recess have them hand sanitize their hands and sit at
their desk do not touch candy bar until instructed.
Review of Previous Topics:
Read student objective: I can use a candy bar to show equivalent
fractions.
Review vocabulary: numerator, denominator, and fraction.
Go over the meaning of the word equivalent
Play rapid fire:
o Write 0, , , , 1 in order from smallest to largest
o Draw a circle cut it into 4 equal pieces and shade in 2/4
o Draw a rectangle cut it into 6 equal pieces and shade in 5/6
Model:
o Grab my candy bar and my worksheet and show students how to
go through the worksheet.
o Ask students to use their candy bar to figure out how many
different ways they can make equal portions give example of
THROUGH:
Guided Practice:
o Have the students look at their worksheet and to find all the
equivalent fractions they can show them the example of
2/12=1/6
o After the worksheet is done go over the equivalent fractions as a
class
Think pair share: have students discuss with a partner
what they notice about the fraction and 3/12 and how
we get from on fraction to the next.
BEYOND:
Swat that:
o Play game left side of room vs. right side of room reviewing
equivalent fractions
Exit Ticket:
o After game have students find a equivalent fraction of 1/3 as
their exit ticket
