Numeracy

Literacy

Term One Overview


During Literacy this term we are focusing on the historical recount. By the end of the unit students will be asked to step into the shoes of a child convict or
traditional Indigenous Australian and recount the events leading up to January 26, 1788 and the life following.
We will look at:
1. The structure of a recount
Orientation establishes the setting and main participants
Sequence of events presents the events in chronological order
Concluding comment comes at the end as an evaluative mark
2. The facts about the long journey of the First Fleet breaking it down into a timeline
3. Land and life in Australia before settlement and the varying perspectives of all involved.
The focus during this unit is the creation and use of language features.
Language Features=
Noun groups (e.g. gale force winds OR narrow dirty streets)
Verb groups (were terrifying)
Adverbs (angrily)
Text connectives of time (Seven weeks later, 8Oclock)
Prepositional Phrases (under, behind and in)
It is always an interesting learning process as students learn to grasp the lack of modern commodities in the 18th century and the extreme conditions convicts
faced in London and/or on board a transport ship.
I encourage those conversations to continue at home as every little detail makes all the difference when students take on those roles.
Students will engage weekly with lessons that support the development of number and measurement. Explicit teaching, small group work, exploration, problem
solving and brain games will support the development of these numeracy skills.

Science
History
Geography

Students will participate in discussions and questions to identify how natural and unnatural influences change the earth over time.
They will make scientific predictions, observations and reflections on various experiments, to which they will then be asked to make
suggestions to prevent damage.

History classes will be taken by Mrs Anthensen every Tuesday afternoon from 1:45pm.
The focus and assessment for this unit is linked to literacy in which students will be asked to explore early colonization.

Geography classes will be taken by Mrs Roache every Thursday afternoon from 1:45pm.
The focus for geography this term is linked to numeracy lessons in which students will be exploring mapping. They will learn how to read and create maps,
legends, scales and directions.
