W.6.1 Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence.
W.6.4 Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and
style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience
L.6.3a Vary sentence patterns for meaning, reader/listener interest, and style.
L.6.3b Maintain consistency in style and tone.
L.6.2b Spell correctly
6.RP.3 Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems, e.g., by
reasoning about tables of equivalent ratios, tape diagrams, double number line diagrams,
or equations.
a. Make tables of equivalent ratios relating quantities with whole-number
measurements, find missing values in the tables, and plot the pairs of values on the
coordinate plane. Use tables to compare ratios.
b. Solve unit rate problems including those involving unit pricing and constant
speed. For example, if it took 7 hours to mow 4 lawns, then at that rate, how many
lawns could be mowed in 35 hours? At what rate were lawns being mowed?
c. Find a percent of a quantity as a rate per 100 (e.g., 30% of a quantity means
30/100 times the quantity); solve problems involving finding the whole, given a part
and the percent.

d. Use ratio reasoning to convert measurement units; manipulate and transform

units appropriately when multiplying or dividing quantities.
6.G.4 Represent three-dimensional figures using nets made up of rectangles and
triangles, and use the nets to find the surface area of these figures. Apply these
techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.
***Not essential but needed to complete the task***
6.NS.2 Fluently divide multi-digit numbers using the standard algorithm.
6.NS.3 Fluently add, subtract, multiply, and divide multi-digit decimals using the standard
algorithm for each operation.

ActivityProcedure:

Performance Task Scenario:

Youre an engineer and you have been hired by the Staying Alive
Engineering Company to choose an above-ground bunker package to be used because of a zombie
apocalypse happening on the east coast. Your client has expressed that the structure allows you to
survive for a minimum of two weeks. You will have three packages to choose from. Consider the
following when making your decision: the structures durability, overall cost, environmental
conditions, and livability.
Task 1 description:Read the articles written about different bunker styles. What are the pros and
cons of each type of bunker? You must put together a presentation for your client selling them
what you believe to be their best option for survival. You may use Chromebook resources that we
have learned or you may branch out and use a web-based program. Youll end up tying in costs,
liveability, and material strength into your final presentation.
Task 2 description:
Now that you have researched the different bunker styles and materials, you
must consider that each bunker package comes with its own unique amenities and livable space.
When given the total cost and the dimensions of each bunker, you must find the cost of the
building less the amenities, compute the area and volume of each geometric shape, and calculate
the structural cost per square foot per building. When calculating the cost per square foot, do not
include the amenities. See the attached tables to help you determine your calculations.
Task 3 description:
During the construction of the bunker a zombie apocalypse has spread faster
than anticipated! The problem is that you are not yet complete with the bunker. While watching
the news the following information was announced. The zombies traveled 260 miles in 4 hours at
a constant speed. If they travel another 2 hours at the same speed and you are 408 miles away,
are you safe? Why? Explain your answer by providing the amount of miles the zombies will travel.
Task 4 description:
After taking into account the pros and cons of each package and the associated
costs, write a one-page, single spaced persuasive business letter (12-point font, Times New Roman)
to your client regarding which package you would recommend and why. You must include
evidence and facts obtained from your previous tasks. As a follow up to your letter, you will show
them your presentation that sums up your main points and arguments using your electronic
method of choice. See Tasks 1-3 for a reminder of all that your client will be looking for in your
proposal.
TASK 5 description:
EXTENSION/REFLECTION: Selling your presentation to the class: You need to

get together with a colleague who either selected a competing structure and compare and contrast
your choices. This will help you on your selling point to your classmates. Create a survey or another
way to electronically record your data, to give to at least three colleagues, that must ask about the
pros and cons of your proposal. You must use this data to write a reflection on what you would
have done differently to improve your products selling point.

the fence will look like this.

a. What is the length, in yards, of the shortest side of the fence when x=15 and y=9 ? Show
your work and explain how you know.
b. Write an expression using variables that represents the perimeter of the fence for any
values of
x

.
c. What is the smallest possible perimeter of the fence? Explain how you know.
