Land Use and Features of Blacksburg, Virginia

Maps created using ArcMap Geographic Information Systems software

by Kayla Johnston, a senior at the Marine Academy of Technology and
Environmental Science. These maps were created the week of
November 8th to November 13th for Mr. Kelseys G.I.S. class. Map layers
were retrieved from and created by the Virginia Tech Library Maps and
Government Documents Division. The following maps are all composed
of data collected on the town of Blacksburg Virginia, home of the Virginia
Polytechnic Institute and State University. The following maps show
different land features of Blacksburg, including land allotments,
classification, as well and facilities.

Featured above are libraries, hotels and inns

(lodging), public schools, and government facilities
of Blacksburg. Government facilities include fire
departments ,recreation offices, research centers,
police stations, transportation departments, and
municipal buildings.

Blacksburg is also zoned for two special types of

land. The Virginia Tech campus takes up a large
area of the town. A lot of the towns land also
consists of agricultural forest districts. These are
voluntary rural conservation zones reserved for the
production of agricultural products and the
maintenance of open space.

The above figure shows the layout of Blacksburg, as well as roads (denoted
by grey lines) and streams (denoted by blue lines). In the smaller inset map
of Virginia, Blacksburg is represented by the red star.

In each watershed, all the water that flows

beneath it will travel to the same area.
