The Dragon Boat Festival celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th month of
the lunar calendar commemorates the life of famous patriotic poet Qu Yuan.
Qu Yuan was originally the Emperors most beloved minister. He offended
many people because he was so opposed to corruption. Soon thereafter
some corrupt ministers talked with the emperor and Qu Yuan was expelled
from the Chu Kingdom.

At the age of 37, he jumped into the Mi Luo River (a place where two
rivers converge in present day Hunan Province). Everyone knew he was a
loyal minister and hurried on their boats in search of him, but never found
him.

When people could not find Qu Yuan in the river, one person dreamed
of fish eating the body of Qu Yuan. To keep the fish from eating his body,
the local people thought of a solution. They wrapped cooked rice in
bamboo leaves and threw it into the river to feed the fish.
