International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme

Coromandel Valley
Primary School
2015
What is the IB Middle Years Programme?
It is a programme of international education designed to help students develop the
knowledge, understanding, attitudes and skills necessary to participate actively and
responsibly in a changing world.
The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IBMYP) is designed for students
aged 11 to 16. This period, encompassing early puberty and mid-adolescence, is a
particularly critical phase of personal and intellectual development and requires a
programme that helps students participate actively and responsibly in a changing and
increasingly
interrelated world. Learning how to learn and how to evaluate information critically is as
important as knowledge.
The Middle Years Programme (MYP) is one of four programmes offered by the
International Baccalaureate (IB).
There are 3968 IB world schools that deliver one or more of the four programmes to over
one million students worldwide.

The Primary Years Programme (PYP) is designed for students aged 3-12.
The Middle Years Programme (MYP) is designed for students aged 11-16.
The Diploma Programme is designed for students aged 16 to 19.
The IB Career-related Certificate is an innovative education framework for students
aged 16-19 who wish to engage in career related learning.
Blackwood High School and Coromandel Valley Primary School work collaboratively to
present the five year IBMYP. Our Year 6 is recognised as Year 1 and our Year 7 as Year 2.
Students may continue the next three years of the IBMYP at Blackwood High or recognise
the programme at Coromandel Valley Primary as excellent preparation for any secondary
schooling.
Coromandel Valley Primary School is also authorised to teach the IB Primary Years
Programme.

What is an international education?

Developing citizens of the world in relation to culture, language and learning to live
together:
building and reinforcing students sense of identity and
cultural awareness
fostering students recognition and development of
universal human values
stimulating curiosity and inquiry in order to foster a spirit
of discovery and enjoyment of learning
equipping students with the skills to learn and acquire
knowledge, individually or collaboratively, and to apply
these skills and knowledge accordingly across a broad
range of areas
providing international content while responding to local requirements and interests
encouraging diversity and flexibility in teaching methods
providing appropriate forms of assessment and international benchmarking.
The overall philosophy of the IBMYP is expressed through three fundamental concepts
that support and strengthen all areas of the curriculum. These concepts are:
Intercultural awareness
Communication
Holistic learning.

Global contexts provide a way to develop more meaningful explorations of learning

through a context:
identities and relationships
orientation in space and time
personal and cultural expression
scientific and technical innovation
globalisation and sustainability
fairness and development.
Approaches to Learning helps students develop an awareness of how they learn best, of
thought processes and of learning strategies. There are five categories:
thinking skills
social skills
communication skills
self-management skills
research skills.
Service as action starts in the classroom and extends beyond it, requiring students to
participate in the community in which they live, encouraging responsible citizenship as it
seeks to deepen students knowledge and understanding of the world around them.
MYP schools can meet the challenge of offering all learners the opportunity to choose to
act; to decide on their actions; and to reflect on these actions.

What is the IB learner profile?
