Junior Achievement Observation
February 20 2015
OBSERVED:
Friday February 20, 2015 start time 1:15 p.m. 18 students present
Teacher introduces fraction work; interrupted by phone, sends boy out, resumes, there will be net
book reading express after fraction work in groups. This is the 112 th day of 2nd grade. As child still
worksask him how many cheddar v\s pretzel fish are there? Redirects AND 2 ND GRADE show me sound
level one make sure it stays that way. There are two conversations at a table close to me regarding
fractions one is girl boy the other is teacher boy. Redirection I HEAR SOUND LEVEL 2 NOT 1 class quiets.
There are five groups of three to four children with only some collaboration on fraction when
needed. OK CLASS REMEMBER NOTRE\DAME NUMERATOR\DENOMINATOR
Oh you used a percent, good thinking. Dave what about you? BINGO you guys got it!

The teacher is constantly fluttering like a butterfly from table to table, helping students to
make connections between the worksheet and the Goldfish snack, made of either pretzel or
cheese. Some students finish the math work early and are then able to take out a netbook, to earn
prizes for advancement in study. The students are very interested in their rewards- pets,
apartments, and other virtual things on the program. Some children arent done yet, however, as
teacher announces there will be only 5 minutes in class to complete the math project.
I notice there is quite a bit of student direction by the instructor at this second grade age
level. The class keeps the teacher very busy, but students are all progressing, some at their own
pace, faster or slower than the others. The teacher instructs the class to line up. When they do so
noisily, she tells them to sit back down and then patiently waits for quiet until she dismisses them
again to the line, remarking it was much better this time. Teacher must focus on social and
academic instruction.

Students file out. Teacher is in hall conversing with students as they go by.
Students trickle in for the next class. Teacher makes and announcement regarding cellular use in
the classroom. Sign is now in use. It will read Music, On, or Off for use respectively as such. She asks
class are we ok with that? Is that something we can agree to? The class mutually agrees, and they
move on. Documentary right? Right a few students say. We are on question 8, or was it 9? What do we
know? Who remembers? No one replies. What do we know about the shortage of water? Remember that
is happening now also. Student responds the um LA aqueduct? Yes and it was finished in.students
respond 1915, rather dreamily. As she starts the documentary, several students move about. Some take
notes, and two lay their heads down. After a few minutes teacher says CLIFTON. CLIFTON. CLIFTON
WAKE UP!

The students can seem difficult to motivate. Those with motivation seem to find it
internally present. Those without are nudged by the teacher until they find some degree of
success at making progress on the documentary notes.
As the film ends the class takes turns pointing out important concepts which could be quiz
material. Teacher acknowledges each participatory remark positively.
