Field Work
Drilling
During the drilling for the borehole, records of the drilled strata are maintained as borehole logs
based on the visual observation. On the borehole log the following data are given:
Name and location of the project.
Borehole number and coordinates as well as start and finish date.
Method of boring, rig type, size of hole, casing and boring fluid used.
Depth and description (classification) of the different layers in accordance with
BS or ASTM Standards.
Groundwater depth, if encountered.
Results of in-situ testing, where applicable.
The log is suitably verified and revised, as necessary, based on the results of the Laboratory
testing on selected soil samples.
Appendix (C) includes the borehole log drawn to a suitable scale. Selected site photographs
showing drilling and sampling are presented in Appendix (Gp).

4.5.1.
Rock designation
Core Recovery and Rock Quality Designation
The rock quality is generally determined in accordance with the following criteria:
Solid Core Recovery (SCR).
Rock Quality Designation (RQD).
Both Solid Core Recovery (SCR) and Rock Quality Designation (RQD) values are determined
as follows:
Total core recovery (TCR) is the ratio of total core recovered (solid and non-intact) to
length of core run
Solid Core Recovery (SCR) is the ratio of solid core recovered to length of core run
and value is given as follow:
SCR = (Total length of solid core) / (Length of core run)
The rock quality designation (RQD) is the ratio of solid core pieces longer than 100 mm
to length of core run and value is given as follow:
RQD = (Total Length of solid core pieces > 10 cm) / (Length of core run)
The values of SCR and RQD are used in in quantitative description of the fracture state of rock
cores.
The results of SCR and RQD are shown in the borehole logs in Appendix (C).

Based on CIRIA guide to the concrete in the Gulf region, chloride content in
excess of 0.5% in soil or groundwater may have a significant effect on
reinforcement where adequate protective cover is not provided. If there is high
Chloride content in the foundation soil, the usage of Sulphate Resisting Cement
should be replaced with the Ordinary Portland Cement for the Cement Concrete.
From table 4-5, it can be noticed that, the chloride content is lower than 0.5%.

Three sample was tested to determine the swelling potential via free swell. The
free swell percentage varies between 5% and 19.7% with average of 12.63%.
General
One of the most important events throughout geologic history of the region is
the closure of the Neo-Tethys ocean. It began in Early Cretaceous along the eastern a
nd northeastern boundaries of the Arabian-Africa Plate and lasted to Pliocene times
(Sengor and Yilmaz, 1981). Ophiolite emplacement is a process that commonly a
ccompanied the closure and subduction of the Neo-Tethys ocean. At present day
a belt of Neo-Tethyan ophiolites follows the suture zone between the Arabian-Eurasian
plate boundary and farther west within the Anatolian plate (Figure 1.1). While at the
north and northeast boundaries of the Arabian plate the closure of the Neo-Tethys and
final suturing processes have concluded and resulted in the building of the Irania
n- Anaoltian plateaus, at the southeast Arabian plate boundary, a piece of the
Neo-Tethys oceanic lithosphere (Semail Ophiolites) was emplaced in the late
Cretaceous,bu
tthe
closure process is still ongoing by subducting the remnant basin of Oman at the
Makran Subduction zone.

Figure 6-1 : A map showing simplified tectonic plate boundaries and major fault

At a later stage, the opening of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden is thought to ha
ve occurred episodically. An initial phase occurring in the period
Middle-Late Eocene and a later phase occurred in the Early Pliocene (~14.5 Ma)
. This separation of Arabia from Africa accommodated by the left
lateral Dead Sea Fault System is thought to be responsible for the reorganization of re

resulted in the extrusion of an Anatolian plate along the North Anatolian Fault (NAF)
and the East Anatolian Fault (EAF) zones. The Anatolian plate's westward
escape is converging along the Hellenic and Cyprean subduction zones, where
Africa's oceanic lithosphere is being subducted.
5.2. Geological setting of Sultanate of Oman
The present
day Arabian Plate is surrounded by different types of known plate boundaries
(Figure 6.1). In the west, a divergent boundary running south from the Gulf of
Aqaba to the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden marks stages of early continental
rifting (Gulf of Aqaba) to the final stages of development of amature oceanic lit
hosphere (southern Red Sea and Gulf of Aden). In the northwest, the Dead Sea
transform fault system separates the Arabian Plate from the African Plate. The n
orthern and the northeastern boundaries are continent collision zones between the
Arabian and the Eurasian plates forming the Bitlis and the Zagros sutures.
The Zagros collision in the east continues south and transforms into a continent
oceanic subduction zone in the Makran subduction zone. The Owen and Murray

Oman consists of three broad natural regions: the Oman Mountains towards the north,
the plateau of the interior and Haushi-Huqf region in the central part of the country and
Dhofar towards the south. These regions can be further subdivided into sub regions
based on its geology:
The Crystalline Basement predominantly composed of granite clan, gneiss and mica
schist, outcrop most extensively in Dhofar, East of Marbat.
The Sedimentary Basement, which non-conformably overlies the Crystalline
Basement and outcrops chiefly in the Hushi-Haqf region and in the Oman
Mountains.
The Late Permian to Late Cretaceous carbonates cover of the Arabian Platform
lying uncomfortably on the basement strata. It is believed that the tilting of the
entire Arabian plate during the early Permian period resulted in uplift in Southern
Yemen and depressions to the northeast. Variations in the sea level have resulted in
the accumulations of numerous marine limestone formations.
A succession of Late Permian to Late Cretaceous deposits consisting of the
predominantly sedimentary Sumeini and Hawasinanappes and the Samail and
Masirahophiolites.
The end of Cretaceous to Tertiary carbonates cover that outcrops in all parts of
Oman.
The Quaternary surficial deposits ranging from scree to sabkha and sand dunes can
be distinguished as recent, sub-recent and ancient horizons. The type of material in

each sub-division depends upon the distance from the source, the nature of the
source rocks, the steepness of the slopes over which it was transported and any
indurations after deposition.
5.3.
The geological setup of Oman can be classified as the igneous and metamorphic
crystalline basement which forms the oldest rocks representing the Late Proterozoic
followed by various igneous and sedimentary rock sequences till end Tertiary and
Quaternary Periods. These are outcropped as various formations throughout Oman with
different geological and physiographic characteristics.
Out of these, one of the distinct physiographic features is the Oman Mountains which is
an arc shaped mountain chain at the North Eastern Part of Oman stretching from Shinas
to Sur, bordered by Gulf of Oman to the North and interior Oman Plateau to the South.
The mountain chains are interpreted to be resulted from the Late Cretaceous
emplacement of Hawasine Nappes and abduction of Oceanic Lithosphere (Samail
Nappe) on the thick pile sedimentary rocks in the North Eastern edge of Arabian
Continental shelf followed by Late Tertiary deformation and uplift.

The geophysical study was carried out (under separate contractor) by Andam
International LLC. Microgravity survey was carried out in the proposed area.
8.2.
Summery
According to the geophysical survey report carried out by others, can summarize as
follows:
1- There is no major anomaly / possible cavity contingent on Bouguer gravity maps
within the building foot prints areas of main hospital building and Mobile hospital
building (MH-1)
2- Four Medium sized anomalies have been noticed on the survey area. Two anomalies
are within building foot print and other two are at the verge of the building foot
prints.

3- In addition, two tiny anomalies features have been noted in the west centeral section
of the site but they are not recommended for any future survey however, this is to
clinet rational if these also need to be surveyed further.
8.3.
Recommendation
Based on the geophysical results, four anmlies have been identified inside and at the
verge of proposed building foot prints. These have been chosen based on their centrality
in each location. MASW survey has been recommended to further confirm the
anomalies inferred microgravity survey.

Foundation depth
The chosen foundation depth must satisfy the above-mentioned criteria. In
addition, the foundation depth must have the following criteria:
The foundation level must be chosen in a way to ensure that the foundation
rests on stable layers.
Minimum foundation depth must permit for the construction of the
foundations.
The foundation shall be embedded into limestone layer by minimum 0.50m.
It worth to mention that, the foundation for Mobile hospital building (MH-1) will
founded on ground floor slab at level +105.00 not in soil.
11.4.
11.4.1. General
Based on the site condition, the bearing capacity shall be estimated based on UCS
and RQD values for rock layer. There are many method to estimate the ultimate
bearing capacity and can summarize as follows:
1- Goodman's method 1989.
2- Peck's method 1974.
3- Canadian foundation engineering design.
From the plot of UCS values verses with level enclosed in appendix (D) , 40 Mpa
has been considered as representative value of UCS for area under study. Also, the
average of RQD up to influence zone of foundation for the area under study is
over than 70%. According to these values and based on the above methods, the
allowable bearing capacity range from 4.0 Mpa to 10 Mpa. However,
consideration for settlement should be taken into account when evaluate the
allowable design bearing capacity.
11.4.2. Allowable Bearing capacity in rock layer with respect the allowable
settlement
When the allowable settlement of foundation is limited to 25 mm for isolated
footing and 50 mm for raft foundation, the allowable bearing capacity ranges from
0.40 Mpa to 1.0 Mpa for foundation embedded into lime stone layer by minimum
0.50m.
12. RECOMMENDATION
1. Excavation can be carried out with the Slope in the order of 1H: 6V, as
minimum, based on the guidelines of BS 6031, 1981 British Standard Code of
Practice for Earthworks to achieve reasonable slope stability safety factor.
Maximum height of excavation should not exceed 8.0 to 10.0m without the
construction of berm. If the height of excavation exceed this limit, it's
recommended to execute the berm with minimum 2.0m wide.
