This course will be graded on a +/- scale. Grades will be assigned according to the
following rough scale: A = 100-90%; B = 89-80%; C = 79-70%; D = 69-60%; F =
59% and below.
Please Note: Detailed prompts for all of the major
assignments listed below will be posted on Titanium.
1) Resume
(5%)
You will submit a resume seeking one of the team roles listed on our iFixit resume
prompt. While each team member is responsible for every aspect of the project at
every step, individual team members will be charged with managing specific
components of the project. Your purpose will be to convince me that you are the
best qualified team member to manage your desired component.
2) Two Conferences with Instructor
(5%)
Teams of students will meet with me to discuss their progress on the iFixit project
(week 11) and portfolios (week 15). Each team member will be required to
complete a conference preparation sheet before attending the conference.
3) Progress Report with Appendix
(10%)
Your iFixit team will submit a 1.5- to 2-page (single-spaced) memo reporting on your
teams progress on your iFixit repair guide pages. The report will include an
appendix with your troubleshooting page, device page, and one page of your repair
guide. The report will describe your teams progress on these pages, acknowledge
any hurdles you are confronting, and forecast your future progress and ability to
meet the iFixit project folder deadline.
4) iFixit Project Folder
(25%)
Your iFixit team will submit a folder containing hard copies of all iFixit milestones
(device, troubleshooting, prerequisite, and guide pages) plus your group charter and
time sheet, proposal w/ iFixits comments, testing checklist from the testing
group, email correspondence with iFixit, and individual one-page self-evaluation
memos.
5) e-Waste Presentation
(10%)
Your iFixit team will introduce the class to an e-waste related topic in a 12-15-minute
presentation using Power Point or Prezi. The presentation will include technical
definitions and will use figures to illustrate data related to your assigned topic. Your
teammates will receive credit for evaluating your presentation.
6) Outcomes Portfolio
(25%)
Youll submit an outcomes portfolio that will allow you to reflect upon, assess, and
polish a few pieces of your work into a collection you think best reflects your
competence as a technical communicator. This portfolio will contain work selected
by you as representing both your best works and your achievement of the
outcomes listed on page one of this syllabus. My portfolio instructions specify
some minimum requirements, including, for example, a revision of at least one
major, eligible assignment and a cover letter (see the prompt on Titanium for
details). Your 500-750-word cover letter will explain how each inclusion satisfies
one or more of our courses Learning Outcomes (see page 1, above).
7) Writers Notebook & Participation
(15%)
Keeping an electronic writers notebook containing all of your reflective, analytical,
and process writing throughout the semester will help you record, guide, and
improve your writing and learning in this class. Youll submit your Writers Notebook
twice during the semester (the dates will be announced in class and on Titanium).
This category will also include your participation in in-class activities, like peer
reviews.

Late Work
Late work will be penalized. If you know you will be absent, turn in your assignment
before the due date. Papers lose one grade level per day, including weekends (A,
A-, B+, B, etc.). I DO NOT ACCEPT PAPERS VIA EMAIL. You may submit your work to
me in class or drop it in the locked box just outside of the English Departments
door. The staff will date stamp your work and put it in my mailbox.
Extra Credit
If an extra credit assignment is distributed, the student can choose to complete or
not complete the assignment. If the assignment is distributed during the class
period, students must be present to take advantage it.
Administrative Policies
Withdrawals and Incompletes: be certain to check CSUFs guidelines and
deadlines for withdrawals. Incompletes can only be given to students who
arrange a timeline to complete their coursework with the instructor BEFORE
the grading period is over.
Accommodations for Students with Disabilities: I am happy to discuss
accommodations you need to succeed in this class. Please make requests for
such accommodations during the first three weeks of the semester so
arrangements can be made.

Email is the best method for contacting me. You can ask me questions or set up
office hour meetings with email, but do not send me papers or rough drafts
via email. I require a hard copy (paper) in my hands on the assignment due
date (see Late Work).

Take advantage of office hours to talk to me about ideas for your papers or
assignments.
3. The Writing Center
The Writing Center provides tutoring and workshops for students. If you feel
you need help with your writing, make an appointment with themtheyre there

and writers who want to keep gadgets out of landfills. Their free, online
instruction manuals teach you how to fix your stuff and serve as excellent
models for the manuals youll write in class.

instructions.
