Formative Assessments
To assess the ability to identify injustices I would use text rendering. Each student would
individually highlight one sentence, one phrase and one word in the reading that they
think defines an injustice and then share the idea in groups. The groups would compile
the words on a poster and decide whether those words represent injustice. I would
review the posters for understanding.
To assess the ability to differentiate political theories I would use a whiteboard activity
where I would read a definition of a theory aloud and students would write down the
theory they think matches the definition and hold them up. After, I would have the
students break up into groups and write down the theories and their own definitions of
them to turn in for me to review.
To assess the effect of the concept of social responsibility on students I would have
students write a postcard to future students about their interpretations of what social
responsibility is and looks like in practice to turn in for review.
To assess the understanding of how people respond to social injustices I would utilize
an exit slip that summarizes things students learned, things they found interesting and
questions they still have to turn in at the end of the day for review.
To assess vocabulary comprehension I would utilize a graphic organizer developed from
the Cloze procedure, similar to Mad Libs. Students would use vocabulary words from a
word bank to fill in sentences within the context of the reading and turn it in for review.
To assess overall unit comprehension I would use the website polleverywhere.com to
conduct a voting poll on different main concept questions that reflect the kind of

questions found on a summative assessment. Students would use their text messaging
systems to vote on answers and I could use the results to guide any final lessons.
Summative Assessment
Citing specific ideas and facts that you learned in this unit, defend a position
within one of the many groups fighting fascism in the years leading up to WWII. How
would you explain the situation of your country and countrymen (and women)? How
would you justify your actions and ideals to the world? Answer using 1-2 pages and
complete sentences.
