OAKLAND TINTVERSITY
UNTVERSITY STIPERVISOR'S ASSESSMENT
Kelsey Chewins student taugbt in a 7ft grade Social Studie$ classroom in the Clarkston School
District at Sashabaw Middle School drning the winter semester of 2015. I am confident that
Kelsey will be a caring cooperative, and higbly dependable beginning teacher. She has a "natural"
teaching ability and is confident and comfortable interacting with members ofthe school
community. What impressed me right from the beeinning was Kelsey's positive attitude and
ability to easily "connecf' with her students. She interacted with them as they came to class each
hour and exhibited active listening skills as she'teached out" to as many students as she could
before class started. She had excellent eye contact and always fostered a positive "feeling tone"
within the classroom. Kelsey also demonstated strength in classroom management; and as she
taught and checked on progress, she used close physical proximity extremely well, monitoring
students closely. There was a sfong "sense of calm" and mutual respect in the classroom, which
was optimum for leaming to occur.

Y,

Kelsey adhered to the district curriculum and planned lessons using ideas from her Cooperating
Teacher, deparment team members, and herself, I was able to observe some finely executed
lessons where Kelsey integrated technology such as video streaming/clips and power point
presentations using digital projection and the document camera to enhance leaming opportunities
for her students. She always used technology confidently and seamlessly, which was very
effective. Learning in Kelsey's classroom was way beyond the textbook. Students were immersed
in activities where they made/presented posters and masks when studying ancient cultures and
used graphic organizen, multiple resowces, and the jigsaw stategy to effectively and efficiently
comprehend nonfiction text. Her Cooperating Teacher reported that she made learning interesting
for the students, incorporating WORDLE and Cultures of Thinking routines such as 6ColorSymbol-Image'to foster student engagement. She also allowed students to work in different
configurations such as large group, small group, parher work, and individually where students
were always productive. What I noticed during my observations was that students were actively
engaged and invested a lot of effort into their work, which was very impressive! Kelsey always
had a confident and commanding presence and students responded favorably to it.
Kelsey has many strengths as a future teacher. During her intemship at Sashabaw Middle School,
she participated in all staffdevelopment and deparfinental planning meetings as well as parentteacher conferences. She also assisted with preparing electronic report cads. She was the High
School varsity dance coach and was able to interact with many of her students and families at
sporting events. She wrote the weekly classroom newsletter to parents and answered parent emails. She also helped out with some after school volley ball games and a homework group called
Study Pack. Kelsey is o'a natural" with people and she has a natural delivery with students. She is a
true professional and it's with great confidence I recommend her for a teaching position. She will
be an asset to any schooVdistrict.
