K-8-1 Demonstrate knowledge of involution process.

One significant learning experience in this course was the theory
class of the involution process post partum. The theory provided
the knowledge of the two uterine processes such as the contraction
of the uterus, and the dropping of the uterus. In theory the
instructor emphasized that the uterus must be firm, and midline for
effective contractions to occur. This is related to the CLPNA
competency as it provides knowledge needed to understand the
involution process and natural body response and nursing
interventions needed to prevent a post partum hemorrhage.

partum haemorrhage. This also includes assess the lochia and

make sure the follow a pattern (Rubra, Serosa to Alba). If the

pad is soaked within an hour with lochia, this signifies a post
partum hemorrhage.
Interventions that can be taken if a uterus appears to be boggy is
a uterine massage which will promote the release of oxytocin to
cause uterine contraction. If the uterine massage is not effective
synthetic oxytocin may be titrated to cause those uterine
contractions.
This is meaningful as it promotes healthy healing for the mother
after the delivery. It also prevents complications that can be fatal.
It is important to educate the mother about assessing the lochia
and signs and symptoms of a post partum hemorrhage. It is also
important to tell the patients that increase activity such as
ambulating, and walking upstairs, will increase the amount of the
lochia.

DESCRIBE HOW YOU
WILL APPLY THIS
LEARNING IN YOUR
CURRENT AND
FUTURE NURSING
PRACTICE

This knowledge will be applicable in my future career as an LPN,

and also if I ever decided to have a child this knowledge can apply
as well. As an LPN, I am able to understand that the involution
process is important to healthy healing, and that it is needed. I do
not only know interventions but I understand the bodys natural
response to prevent a post partum hemorrhage (increase platelets,
oxytocin release to stimulate uterine contraction). This will allow
me to give competent care, and to rationale my interventions used
during the post partum period.
