CFTK Recruiting Motivators & Volunteers Soon

BY: ALLISON ORMAN
We all keep an up-to-date Motivational Workout Songs
playlist, hang on to the handwritten letters moms send in
care packages and savor a professors compliments on
an outstanding paper. The point is that we can all use a
little motivation. Dance Marathon is no different. Carolina
For The Kids motivators and volunteers are essential to
providing encouragement, energy and a helpful hand.
From Feb. 22 to Feb. 26, CFTK committee members will
be on campus recruiting students to be motivators and
volunteers for this years Marathon on April 1-2.
If you were nervous about doing the entire 24 hours,
being a motivator is a great way to introduce yourself
to the Marathon while staying connected to the cause
and organization, said Caitlinn LaScala, the Morale and
Recruitment Chair. If you are looking to help out with
more of the operational side of the Marathon, being a
volunteer gives you a behind the scenes look at what it
takes to put together an event like the Marathon.
LaScala said that motivators stand for six hour shifts
and have the opportunity to dress in themed costumes
in an effort to energize and entertain the dancers.
Volunteers assist with the set-up or check-in the
Marathon participants. Motivators pledge to raise $60
and volunteers pledge to raise $30, which allows both

For the Kids Story

BY: CIARA HANLON

While enthusiastic Tar Heel and Wolfpack fans entered

the Dean E. Smith Center January 16, 2016 for the UNC
Chapel Hill vs. NC State mens basketball game, the annual
Smith Center Childrens Challenge began.
If everyone who attended the game donated just $1,
then over $20,000 could have be raised! Those unable to
attend the game could also text in or go online to donate.
This annual event is a way to raise an incredible amount
in just a short amount of time and spread awareness how
Carolina For The Kids as an organization supports Tar Heel
fans and Wolfpack fans alike.
Hunter Cornelius, Finance Chair for Carolina For The
Kids, said, The challenge gives us another way to engage
with fans and get our message out there! By reaching out
to basketball fans, students, and alumni, the challenge
also demonstrates how even a small donation can grow to
become part of a greater positive impact.

Nick had a traumatic accident on a four-wheeler

years ago. As a result, the 11-year-old has frequent
hospital admissions due to the complicated health
needs he has as a result of his previous injuries. His
mother accompanies him during hospitalizations and
his father comes to N.C. Childrens Hospital to be with
him when he is able. The family struggles financially,
especially due to the cost of gas incurred by driving to
and from the hospital and their home, which is in rural
N.C. Gas assistance through the For the Kids Fund has
helped to ease some of that stress and allow this young
boys family to be with him while he is hospitalized.

Benefit Reception Successful

BY: HALEY WAXMAN PUBLICITY CHAIR
Carolina For The Kids hosted its
14th annual Benefit Reception on
Friday, Feb. 5 with many exciting
updates to previous years events.
The Benefit Reception is a silent
and live auction held in the spring
semester to assist in our goal of
supporting the patients and families
of UNC Childrens.
It is an elegant evening complete
with food and music, attended by
prominent members of the Chapel
Hill community as well as hospital
doctors and staff, families that have
directly benefited from our support,
and students and parents involved
with the organization.
For the second year in a row, the
event raised over $30,000, with over
80 items auctioned off throughout
the night. The most exciting auction
items were a UNC Mens Basketball
number 40 jersey that was signed
by the 2011-2012 team, and a

goldendoodle puppy that was able

to be there to woo the audience,
said Event Donations Chair Emily
Wayland.
As is for all CFTK events, our cause
was never far from our minds. Several
Kid Co-Captains and their families
were able to attend the event, and
each were presented with a gift
basket that was bid on throughout
the evening. Wayland said, It was a
great way to keep the event cause
focused.
The Benefit Reception was hosted
at the Friday Center this year to
accommodate increased attendance
needs and offer a more elegant
setting. I was so proud of the overall
event, said Wayland. I think it went
better than my expectations; people
enjoyed themselves, my committee
really stepped it up, and we made a
lot of money.
