7. PROCEDURES :
(a) Five identical beakers are filled with water with mass, m = 0.40 kg, 0.50 kg, 0.60
kg, 0,70 kg and 0.80 kg . Mass of water in each beaker is measured by a triple
beam balance
(b) Thermometer is placed in the beaker filled with water of mass 0.40 kg and its
initial temperature, θ0 is recorded.
(c) Electrical heater is switched on for 1 minute
(d) Water in the beaker is stirred slowly
(e) Water is still stirred slowly after the electrical heater is switched off and the
highest temperature, θ1 is recorded.
(f) The rise in temperature, Δθ = θ1 – θ0 is recorded.
(g) Repeat the steps in (b), (c), (d), (e) and (f) for beaker of m= 0.50 kg, 0.60 kg, 0.70
kg and 0.80 kg respectively
(h) Plot a graph increase in temperature, Δθ against mass of water, m

Increase in temperature, Δθ
Mass, m / kg
(1) Water in beaker must be stirred frequently to ensure that heat is distributed evenly
in water.
(2) Make sure that the coil of the electrical heater is always immersed properly in
water during the heating process
3
(1) Plot a graph increase in temperature, Δθ against 1/m
