The Bucket Fillers

November 3rd, 2015

Supplies
I have been going through
and labelling the childrens
school supplies. Each
subject will have its own
duotang/scribbler so that
you can see your childs
progress throughout the
year!

Welcome to Grade One, where we do all

we can to spread kindness to others!

Kailah and Tyler are working
on a part-part whole
activity! Part of our goals
for this number outcome is
to be able to break down
numbers to 20, and identify
the numbers in each part.
For example, when Tyler
and Kailah broke down 7,
they had 6 bears outside
and 1 bear inside a cup. This
is known as partitioning.

RAZ Kids
Please visit raz-kids.com
to log in and have your
child read online! They
can read books at their
level and complete short
comprehension quizzes.
Please find your childs
log-in information in the
front pouch of their
agenda.

Book Bags
Book Bags will be changed daily-- please send them to
school with the books each day. Try your best to make
reading with your child part of their nightly routine; if you
read for 10 minutes a night it adds up to almost an hour
per week!
A parent or guardian should be signing the duotang each
night!

Agendas
Students will use their agendas to communicate with their parents/guardians. The agenda
will go home every day with school notices, school work etc. We will continue writing small
notes in our agendas! It is important that you send the agenda with your child each day.
I check agendas for notes from parents/guardians, if email is not available.

The Bucket Fillers

Math
We are working on recognizing (at a
glance) arrangements of 1-10 objects,
pictures, and dots. As well, we are working
on representing and writing numbers to 20.
We have used base ten blocks and ten
frames to assist us. Ask your child about
tricky teen numbers! We know that
numbers in their teens, they start with a
one!. We are also looking at whole number
words to 20.
We are still practicing counting by 1s to
100! We have also begun to skip count by
2s to 20. Here are some resources to
assist your child at home:

Social Studies
We are wrapping up our Power and
Authority unit this week and next. I will be
administering individual summative
assessments on some ideas we have talked
about in class regarding peace and
harmony (i.e.: examples of rules, why rules
are important, what is conflict, conflict
scenarios, etc.), and will scribe your childs
response.

Science
The children did an excellent job working
together while exploring pumpkins last
week! I look forward to hearing the animal
presentations this week and next!

English Language Arts

A big thanks to our Mystery Readers so
far! The kids were so excited and it was
wonderful having you in. Thanks so much!
Please review sight words and letter
sounds with your child at home whenever
possible. Ask your child what sound they
explored in class, as well as the associated
movement with it Along with letter
sounds, we will continue to look at word
families. We have looked at at and ar,
and will look at the op family this week.
Yesterday we talked about the concept of
two vowels go walking, the first one does
the talking. If the children see two vowels
together in a word, the first vowel is read,
and read by its letter name. Example: Read
read (e says its name)

We have started writing in our Writing

Journals! The kids seem to be enjoying our
writing time and are doing an excellent job.
This weeks goals are to use finger spaces
and to work on sounding out our words. We
have just begun talking about sentences
and punctuation yesterday,
We have been practicing Read to Self, and
read for 11 minutes last week. WOW!
Way to go, Grade One! Reading helps us
become better readers and is fun! As we
move forward, we will learn various
strategies to help us become better
readers, such as reading the pictures
(eagle eye), and stretching out the sounds
in words (stretchy snake), to name a
couple.
