UNESCO REGIONAL OFFICE FOR EDUCATION IN ASIA P.O, BOX 1425, BANGKOK Dp ANTHROPOMETRIC DATA AVAILABLE FOR THE ASIAN REGION Purpose D EDUCATIONAL BUILDING DIGEST By 1965. data on the body sizes of Asian children had been collected, analysed ‘and published for Indonesia, India, the Philippines, Thailand and (now) Bangladesh. Since then, further date, not all of which have been published, have been collected from Srl Lanke, Iran, Afghanistan, the Khmer Republic and the Republic of the Malai ‘The purpose of this digest is to bring all these data together in a form convenient to designers of buildings and furniture and, at the same time, to provide average data which can be used in countries in which information on children's body sizes is not available. Limitations 1. With the exception of data for India, Khmer Republic and Thailand, the sample sizo was limited. 2. Data for ages between 6 and 12 years are most reliable. Above 12 years of age, the somple size for most countries was small 3. With the exception of indian, Khmer and Thai data, the sample was usually taken in oF near the capital or in one specific area of the country. 4, The mean standing helghts for the region should be used with care as the range is 12"ge. For example, the mean standing heights for 14-year-olds in Indonosta and {ran are respectively 140 and 168 cm whereas the figure for the region is 151 cm.
