Graduate Research
A Graduate Research Degree provides candidates with an opportunity to undertake
focused research under supervision for several years in order to make a significant
contribution within the chosen research area. During this time a candidate also
develops research skills and attitudes. Students participate in a knowledge based
community within an academic environment and they have an opportunity to attend
workshops, seminars and conferences and publish academic journals.
Candidates shall be required to pursue an appropriate programme of research on a
subject falling within the scope of the studies presented at the Mukwa School of
Economics and Political Science. Students must also adhere to possible other
conditions prescribed by Colleges/Schools. Postgraduate research degrees are often
aimed at people who already have a Masters degree. The School offers postgraduate
degrees by research of various durations. Students undertake a research project under
the guidance of an academic supervisor and, unlike a postgraduate degree by
coursework and dissertation, there are no formal lectures or seminars and work is not
formally examined until after the final thesis is submitted. Our graduate school offer
induction programmes and skills training opportunities for all research students to
support their studies and to help with career planning.
Masters by Research
Masters by research degree provides candidates with the opportunity to extend
learning beyond former qualifications and professional experience, and articulate to a
PhD.
Duration
A minimum of four consecutive semesters (full-time) or eight consecutive semesters
(part-time) before the degree may be conferred.
Curriculum
Students will be required to pursue an approved programme of research on a subject
falling within the scope of studies at the Mukwa School of Economics and political
Science. Such a programme shall make a distinct contribution to the knowledge or
understanding of the subject and afford evidence of originality shown either by the
discovery of new facts and by the exercise of independent critical power. Students must
also adhere to other possible conditions prescribed by Colleges/Schools.
Selection procedure

19

The selection of students for postgraduate study is at the discretion of the Deans and
Heads of Schools or the Dean of Research, who will require a particular standard of
previous attainment. An applicant may contact the School concerned for more
information.
Application procedure
While actual selection is carried out by Schools, administrative application is a vital part
of the procedure which must be followed:

Postgraduate Admission form.
Application forms are available from the Applications/College Offices or on the
Mukwa
School
of

The Mukwa School of Economics and Political Science MBA programmes have one or
more existing of the following seven core modules:
Operations Management
Marketing Management
Human Resource Management
Information Management
Financial Management
Strategic Management
International Management

Operations Management
Operations Management is all about processes, organizational structures, strategies,
and quality systems. What do these look like in practice? What is the vision of the
organization on products, markets, and objectives? How can the quality, efficiency,
flexibility, and uniqueness be improved? How can practical experience and insights
from literature lead to a vision in this field? You will gain insight into processes within
organizations, know how to detect bottlenecks, and learn how to interpret theoretical
models and apply them to improve organizational processes.
Marketing Management
The traditional pillars of marketing and current trends will be dealt with in this module.
You will get insight into what marketing is, the different ideas present in the field of
marketing, consumer behavior, market analyses, international marketing, product
development and policy, distribution plans, old and new economy, and the role of ebusiness. The ultimate goal is creating a marketing plan. Lots of attention will be given
to underpin and analyse market data. Everybody knows an organization must operate in
36

a market- directed manner, but how is this translated into practice? How can you
determine whether or not your organization is market-directed?
Human Resource Management
People form the core of every organisation. Regardless of what the labour market looks
like: good people are unique, hard to find, and almost irreplaceable. These human
resources should be fully exploited. Personal and organisational objectives should be
integrated. In this module, you will gain insight into the role of HRM within an
organisation. You will learn the difference between classic staff management and HRM,
get to know the leading HRM models - such as the Harvard and Michigan models - and
the variety of tools which can be used, and learn how HRM strategies can support
organisational strategies.
Information Management
The right information at the right moment in time: this is the goal of information
management. Due to the growing importance of ICT in organisations, information
management is becoming an increasingly versatile and interesting field. While it used to
be a job area of techies with a focus on collecting and processing data, nowadays it is
important for managers to steer information processes as well. During this module, you
will learn what the possibilities and impossibilities of ICT are within an organisation, get
to know the latest trends in the field of information science, learn how to make strategic
decisions in the field of information management, and learn how to initiate ICT projects
while shaping the organisation accordingly.
Financial Management
Every manager is familiar with the problem of having too little financial information to
make decisions. If the information is present, the manager should also have the
knowledge to interpret and understand it. This module will offer you the tools to
accomplish this. You will learn a large amount of financial concepts, such as EVA
(Economic Value Added), ABC (Activity Based Costing), budgeting systems, cash flow
approach, total cost of ownership, and zero based budgeting. Moreover, you will learn
how to apply these concepts into daily practice, enabling you to become your directors
sparring partner when it comes to finance
Strategic Management
Strategy is the long-term plan of an organisation, comprising the objectives to be
reached, the resources to use, and the channels through which they should be carried
out. The knowledge and skills acquired in previous modules will be used in this model
to shape the future of an organisation, since in all fields, an organisation should figure
out how to convert corporate vision into organisational strategy. How do you shape
such a strategy? How do you set out a navigable course? With the help of a SWOT
analysis or based on resource-based strategy, where core competencies, knowledge,
talent, and technology are regarded as building blocks for the future? There are
different approaches to forming a strategy. In this module, you will learn how to assess
and use your merits.
International Management
37

Throughout this module, you will get to know everything about other business cultures,
on both a theoretical and practical level. The complexity which comes along with cooperation between different cultures will be dealt with in great detail. A variety of dos
and donts will be reviewed different cultures will be examined. You will look at how to
gain maximum pay-off from co-operation with organisations located elsewhere, where
different cultures apply.
Master programme in International Business and Management comprises of fifteen
modules of which the following seven modules are compulsory:
Finance, Reporting & Analytics
Human Resource Management
Organisation Theory
Business Statistics
Business Intelligence & Analytics
Research Methodology
Communication
Finance, Reporting & Analytics
The aims of this module are for you as a student to develop a comprehensive
understanding of the fundamental concepts and techniques of financial and
management accounting and financial management, through demonstrating a critical
understanding of the role and structure of the finance and control functions within an
organisation. This module will enable you to critically evaluate relevant financial
information for control and decision-making and employ quantitative and qualitative
techniques to prepare reports and analyse financial data. You will also master the
ability to analyse and evaluate financial information and present results in an
appropriate form. This module looks at aspects such as the environment of accounting
and the accountant`s role in the organisation, accounting concepts and policies, profit
and loss, the balance sheet, cash flow, financial statements, and the interpretation and
evaluation of accounts. It deals with ratios, comparisons and trends, and looks at
investment appraisal, return on investment, and budgeting and budgetary control.
Organisation Theory
This module brings together the aspects of structural and functional effectiveness of
work organisations and their implications for behavioural consequences with the
planning and coordinating the use of the organisations resources to produce goods
and provide services. The module looks at mechanistic versus organic systems,
adherence to classical principles of organisation, and technology as a base factor. It
enables you to critically analyse organisational climates and compares the technical
and social foundations of organisations. Management of the organisation and its
operations are brought together, allowing you to formulate strategic decisions involving
design and operations. You will then learn how to make decisions relating to capacity
planning, product design, process design, layout of facilities, facility location selection,
and you will learn to understand the ripple effect, and how to influence operational
decisions relating to quality assurance, scheduling, inventory management, and project
management.
38

Business Statistics
Good decision making in companies and organisations is driven by the correct
understanding and interpretation of data, and the presentation of information. This
module will enable you to use the understanding of analytical and descriptive statistics,
research methods and statistical tests to develop methods and solutions that will
enable good decision making in business scenarios that are uncertain and possibly
risky. The module will cover descriptive statistics, including the collection, description,
analysis and summary of data, as well as probability and correlation. Areas such as
linear regression and the test of hypotheses are also covered.
Research Methodology
During this module you will explore a specific area of interest within international
business and management in greater depth. Transferable skills in research, information
and project management will be developed, equipping you for the continuously
changing business environment. The aim of this module is to enable you to undertake a
self-managed process of systematic academic enquiry within the domain of
management. Also, you will learn to recognise and critically evaluate different business
and management research designs and the assumptions upon which they are based.
You will be able to develop a structured programme of research in pursuit of your
Masters Dissertation based upon informed choices about the research designs,
techniques and procedures to be followed. You will also be enabled to conduct
research in a systematic, rigorous and critically reflective manner and synthesise data
from a wide variety of sources having due regard to issues of general application,
validity and reliability within an acceptable dissertation format. You will be able to
demonstrate capacity and competence in critical self-evaluation with respect to
personal development.
Business Intelligence & Analytics
Historically, departmental thinking in the business world has been common procedure.
However, clients, shareholders and other stakeholders have become much more
articulate and demanding. As a result, the decision cycle needs to be shortened and the
companys personnel have to be empowered to take decisions at lower organizational
levels. This requires integrated information flows that connect the strategic, tactical and
operational levels. Company performance is highly dependent on achieving that. One
should learn to be aware of this relationship and be inclined to make a substantial
positive contribution to it, partly because many companies are still struggling with it.
During this module you will learn to develop a good insight into the problems caused by
disintegrated information and management systems and be equipped to contribute to
building up an adequate strategy of performance management, involving state-of-theart ICT. You will acquire knowledge and understanding in the areas of strategic
intelligence (e.g. performance indicators), financial intelligence (in particular
budgeting), business intelligence (e.g. balanced scorecard, performance measurement,
and benchmarking), analytical intelligence (e.g. pithead business problem-solving), and
performance management infrastructure (in particular data warehousing).
Communication

39

Communication skills are essential in getting across your suggestions and proposals.
When you are heading for changes in strategies and behaviour, acceptance,
cooperation and adequate follow-up cannot be taken for granted. In this module, you
will learn to deal with these issues. Although there are always imponderable aspects at
play, an interesting body of knowledge exists that can be of great help, in particular in
the areas of negotiation, coaching & mentoring, and conflict mediation. The subject will
delve into these areas with the aid of theories, cases, and interactive discourse.
Intercultural communication aspects will be taken into account as a major focus point.
You will learn to apply basic models in order to deal with acceptance, cooperation, and
follow-up issues. This module also provides a basis for doing research that brings to
light how acceptance, cooperation and follow-up can be promoted within a particular
organisation.
THE SCHOOL OF SOCIAL AND POLITICAL SCIENCE

Course modules/subjects within the department of Political

Science
Introductory
The courses listed below are introductions to the discipline of political science: Politics,
Comparative Politics, International Politics, and Political Theory. One introductory
course is required of majors. No more than two introductory courses in different
subfields may be counted towards the major.

Gender, Social Problems and Social Change

This course introduces students to a variety of social problems using insights from
political science, sociology, and gender studies. It begins with an exploration of the
sociological perspective, and how social problems are defined. It then examines the
general issues of inequalities based on economic and employment status, racial and
ethnic identity, and gender and sexual orientation. It applies these categories of
analysis to problems facing the educational system and the criminal justice system. The
course further examines specific issues, and discusses political processes, social
movements, and individual actions that people have used to address these problems.
Family, Law, and Social Policy
This course explores the ways laws and social policies intertwine with the rapid
changes affecting Zambian families in the 21st century. We focus on ways in which
public policies both respond to and try to influence changes in family composition and
structure. The topics we explore may include marriage (including polygamous
marriage); the nuclear family and alternative family forms; domestic violence and the
law; incarcerated parents and their children; juvenile justice and families; transnational
families; and family formation using reproductive technologies. Although focusing on
contemporary law and social policy, we place these issues in historical and comparative
perspective.
40

Zambian Politics
The course analyses the Zambian political system and the structures and processes by
which public policies are formulated and implemented. Attention is focused upon
decision making in institutions of Zambian government, such as Parliament, the
Presidency, and the Supreme Court, and upon political behaviorpublic opinion,
voting, and other forms of political activity. Attention is also given to evaluation of
selected public policies and contemporary issues, and questions of political change.
Zambian Politics: Conflict and Power. An analysis of Zambian politics as an example
of the uses of conflict to uphold and/or to change established relationships of power
and public policy. A main focus is on alternative theories and strategies of conflict,
especially as reflected in such institutions as the constitution, court, party system,
interest groups, the media, and presidency
Zambian Politics: Democracy and Citizenship. This course examines tensions and
conflicts surrounding contemporary Zambia democracy within the context of a global
world. Issues of citizenship and immigration, liberty, security, class, race, ethnicity, and
gender inform a consideration of government institutions and processes. Specific topics
vary according to changing political events and circumstances.
Comparative Politics
This course examines the political systems across the world, different types of political
regimes, states, and societies. The political system is seen to include formal institutions
of government, such as parliaments and bureaucracies; political parties and other
forms of group life; those aspects of the history and social and economic structure of a
society that are relevant to politics; and political beliefs, values, and ideologies. Special
attention is given to the question of political change and development, whether through
revolutionary or constitutional process.
Comparative Politics: Analyzing Politics in the World. This course introduces how
comparatives analyze politics within states in the world. Topics include state formation,
democracy and dictatorship, political economy, social movements, revolution,
ethnicity, and political culture. The course draws from both theoretical work and
country and regional case studies that may include Zambia the US, China, India, Cuba,
Great Britain, Iran, the Middle East, and South Africa. The course uses cases to analyze
and compare basic concepts and patterns of the political process. The course aims at
equipping students to have both an understanding of the diversity of the worlds
political systems, as well as an appreciation of the questions and concepts that inform
the work of political scientists.

International Politics
The course examines major issues in international politics, including national and
international security and production and distribution of wealth, along with selected
global issues such as human rights, ethnic nationalism and ethnic conflict, migration
41

and refugees, environmental degradation and protection, and the impact of

developments in communication and information technologies. Attention is also given
to the origins, evolution, and the future of the contemporary international system, as
well as to competing theoretical perspectives on world politics.
Political Theory
Introduction to the nature and types of political theory. The subject outlines the
problems of political theories. The core of the readings consists of selections from what
are considered classic works in the field. The course emphasizes the relevance of these
ideas to current political developments and scholarship.
Political Theory: Central Political Concepts and Practices. The subject examines
political concepts and practices with reading from the history of political philosophy
and contemporary thinkers. The course treats concepts and practices such as freedom,
citizenship, equality, the state, revolution, the Socratic question of how best to lead
one's life, conservatism, and anarchism, using readings by thinkers such as Aristotle,
Machiavelli, Locke, Mill, Gandhi, Arendt, Foucault, and current authors.

Environmental Political thought

The emerging awareness of ecological problems in the past half-century has led to a
questioning and rethinking of some important political ideas. What theories can
describe an ecologically-sound human relation to nature; what policies derive from
those theories; and how do they value nature? What is the appropriate size of political
units? What model of citizenship best addresses environmental issues? The course
addresses selected issues through readings in past political thinkers like Locke and
Marx and in contemporary political and environmental theorists.
Political Analysis
The course examines the methods for collecting quantitative and qualitative data in
political science. In addition to exploring the logic of scientific inquiry and methods of
analysis, normative questions are raised concerning the potential biases and limitations
of particular modes of inquiry. Research examples emphasize the special problems in
cross-cultural validation.

Media and Politics

This course explores various forms of media, including newspapers and journals,
television, film, radio, and the internet as well as politics in the contemporary Zambia.
Among the topics examined are the relationships between media and electoral politics;
governance at the national level; crime and law and order; politics and gender.

Power and Public Policy

42

This course examines the public policy consequences of power in Zambia, including
the role of the corporation as a policy making institution and the influence of citizens
and social movements on public policy. The emphasis is on theories of power,
relationships between economic and political power, and the impact of power on
ideology and the structuring of policy alternatives, policy making, and policy
implementation. Case studies may include policy areas such as health, environment,
tobacco, technology, and mass media.

The Zambian Presidency

The course analyses the Zambian presidency, with emphasis on recent presidents.
Topics include presidential nominations and elections; the nature and use of
presidential power; the institutionalized presidency; policy making in the State House;
the relationship between presidents and other key political factors, e.g., the Congress,
the bureaucracy, the media, and public opinion; and the role of presidential personality
and style..

Law, Justice, and Politics

The course analyses the interrelationships between law and politics in civil and criminal
spheres in Zambia, focusing on the role of the police, courtroom participants, and
prison officials. Special emphasis is given to decision making in criminal law at the local
levele.g., pretrial negotiations, bail, and sentencing.

Constitutional Law
The course explores the leading decisions of the Supreme Court interpreting the
Constitution of Zambia, with special reference to the powers of government and the
rights of individuals.

Political Parties and Public Opinion

The course examines the nature and roles of public opinion and political parties in
Zambian politics, with emphasis on democratic means of political participation and
influence in contemporary Zambia. Special attention is paid to mass and elite political
attitudes and behavior, techniques of public opinion polling, the impact of public
opinion on policy making, recent national elections, campaign techniques and
strategies, and the changing party system.

Civil Rights
This course examines the causal and remedial relationship of law to racial
discrimination. The course considers the development of civil rights claims in a number
of areas such as education, housing and employment. Competing visions of racial
equality embedded in civil rights legislation, in case law and in legal discourse. The
course also seek to assess how the legal system has accommodated racism and racial
43

subordination as well as the extent to which racial progress is both enabled and
delimited within the legal frame.

The Politics of Difference

This course relates to the meanings of various group experiences in Zambian politics. It
explicitly explores, for example, issues of race, class, gender, disability, and sexual
orientation. Among other things, this course addresses the contributions of the Critical
Legal Studies, the Feminist Jurisprudence Movement.

Comparative Politics
The Politics of Modern Social Movements
This course examines continuities and transformations in both the study and practice
of modern political and social movements. The course explores why movements
emerge, how they develop, and what they accomplish. We study several dimensions of
collective action, including their organization, leadership, ideology or programmatic
content, and objectives. Our case studies are rich and diverse, spanning actors and
geographic regions, yet we consciously draw comparisons across the cases concerning
movements' origins, the context of power relations and political positioning within
society. We also seek to understand the sometimes powerful, sometimes subtle
influences of social movements on the nature of socioeconomic, gender, racial, ethnic,
national and transnational relations today.
