any other manner attained a level of competence which, in the opinion of the
Senate, is adequate for the purpose of postgraduate studies or research, may be
admitted as a student of the Mukwa School of Economics and Political Science
Graduate Research
A Graduate Research Degree provides candidates with an opportunity to undertake
focused research under supervision for several years in order to make a significant
contribution within the chosen research area. During this time a candidate also
develops research skills and attitudes. Students participate in a knowledge based
community within an academic environment and they have an opportunity to attend
workshops, seminars and conferences and publish academic journals.
Candidates shall be required to pursue an appropriate programme of research on a
subject falling within the scope of the studies presented at the Mukwa School of
Economics and Political Science. Students must also adhere to possible other
conditions prescribed by Colleges/Schools. Postgraduate research degrees are often
aimed at people who already have a Masters degree. The School offers postgraduate
degrees by research of various durations. Students undertake a research project under
the guidance of an academic supervisor and, unlike a postgraduate degree by
coursework and dissertation, there are no formal lectures or seminars and work is not
formally examined until after the final thesis is submitted. Our graduate school offer
induction programmes and skills training opportunities for all research students to
support their studies and to help with career planning.
Masters by Research
Masters by research degree provides candidates with the opportunity to extend
learning beyond former qualifications and professional experience, and articulate to a
PhD.
Duration
A minimum of four consecutive semesters (full-time) or eight consecutive semesters
(part-time) before the degree may be conferred.
Curriculum
Students will be required to pursue an approved programme of research on a subject
falling within the scope of studies at the Mukwa School of Economics and political
Science. Such a programme shall make a distinct contribution to the knowledge or
understanding of the subject and afford evidence of originality shown either by the
discovery of new facts and by the exercise of independent critical power. Students must
also adhere to other possible conditions prescribed by Colleges/Schools.
Selection procedure
19
The selection of students for postgraduate study is at the discretion of the Deans and
Heads of Schools or the Dean of Research, who will require a particular standard of
previous attainment. An applicant may contact the School concerned for more
information.
Application procedure
While actual selection is carried out by Schools, administrative application is a vital part
of the procedure which must be followed:
All applicants for postgraduate study must complete a Mukwa school Application for
Postgraduate Admission form.
Application forms are available from the Applications/College Offices or on the
Mukwa
School
of

The Mukwa School of Economics and Political Science MBA programmes have one or
more existing of the following seven core modules:
Operations Management
Marketing Management
Human Resource Management
Information Management
Financial Management
Strategic Management
International Management
Operations Management
Operations Management is all about processes, organizational structures, strategies,
and quality systems. What do these look like in practice? What is the vision of the
organization on products, markets, and objectives? How can the quality, efficiency,
flexibility, and uniqueness be improved? How can practical experience and insights
from literature lead to a vision in this field? You will gain insight into processes within
organizations, know how to detect bottlenecks, and learn how to interpret theoretical
models and apply them to improve organizational processes.
Marketing Management
The traditional pillars of marketing and current trends will be dealt with in this module.
You will get insight into what marketing is, the different ideas present in the field of
marketing, consumer behavior, market analyses, international marketing, product
development and policy, distribution plans, old and new economy, and the role of ebusiness. The ultimate goal is creating a marketing plan. Lots of attention will be given
to underpin and analyse market data. Everybody knows an organization must operate in
36
a market- directed manner, but how is this translated into practice? How can you
determine whether or not your organization is market-directed?
Human Resource Management
People form the core of every organisation. Regardless of what the labour market looks
like: good people are unique, hard to find, and almost irreplaceable. These human
resources should be fully exploited. Personal and organisational objectives should be
integrated. In this module, you will gain insight into the role of HRM within an
organisation. You will learn the difference between classic staff management and HRM,
get to know the leading HRM models - such as the Harvard and Michigan models - and
the variety of tools which can be used, and learn how HRM strategies can support
organisational strategies.
Information Management
The right information at the right moment in time: this is the goal of information
management. Due to the growing importance of ICT in organisations, information
management is becoming an increasingly versatile and interesting field. While it used to
be a job area of techies with a focus on collecting and processing data, nowadays it is
important for managers to steer information processes as well. During this module, you
will learn what the possibilities and impossibilities of ICT are within an organisation, get
to know the latest trends in the field of information science, learn how to make strategic
decisions in the field of information management, and learn how to initiate ICT projects
while shaping the organisation accordingly.
Financial Management
Every manager is familiar with the problem of having too little financial information to
make decisions. If the information is present, the manager should also have the
knowledge to interpret and understand it. This module will offer you the tools to
accomplish this. You will learn a large amount of financial concepts, such as EVA
(Economic Value Added), ABC (Activity Based Costing), budgeting systems, cash flow
approach, total cost of ownership, and zero based budgeting. Moreover, you will learn
how to apply these concepts into daily practice, enabling you to become your directors
sparring partner when it comes to finance
Strategic Management
Strategy is the long-term plan of an organisation, comprising the objectives to be
reached, the resources to use, and the channels through which they should be carried
out. The knowledge and skills acquired in previous modules will be used in this model
to shape the future of an organisation, since in all fields, an organisation should figure
out how to convert corporate vision into organisational strategy. How do you shape
such a strategy? How do you set out a navigable course? With the help of a SWOT
analysis or based on resource-based strategy, where core competencies, knowledge,
talent, and technology are regarded as building blocks for the future? There are
different approaches to forming a strategy. In this module, you will learn how to assess
and use your merits.
International Management
37
Throughout this module, you will get to know everything about other business cultures,
on both a theoretical and practical level. The complexity which comes along with cooperation between different cultures will be dealt with in great detail. A variety of dos
and donts will be reviewed different cultures will be examined. You will look at how to
gain maximum pay-off from co-operation with organisations located elsewhere, where
different cultures apply.
Master programme in International Business and Management comprises of fifteen
modules of which the following seven modules are compulsory:
Finance, Reporting & Analytics
Human Resource Management
Organisation Theory
Business Statistics
Business Intelligence & Analytics
Research Methodology
Communication
Finance, Reporting & Analytics
The aims of this module are for you as a student to develop a comprehensive
understanding of the fundamental concepts and techniques of financial and
management accounting and financial management, through demonstrating a critical
understanding of the role and structure of the finance and control functions within an
organisation. This module will enable you to critically evaluate relevant financial
information for control and decision-making and employ quantitative and qualitative
techniques to prepare reports and analyse financial data. You will also master the
ability to analyse and evaluate financial information and present results in an
appropriate form. This module looks at aspects such as the environment of accounting
and the accountant`s role in the organisation, accounting concepts and policies, profit
and loss, the balance sheet, cash flow, financial statements, and the interpretation and
evaluation of accounts. It deals with ratios, comparisons and trends, and looks at
investment appraisal, return on investment, and budgeting and budgetary control.
Organisation Theory
This module brings together the aspects of structural and functional effectiveness of
work organisations and their implications for behavioural consequences with the
planning and coordinating the use of the organisations resources to produce goods
and provide services. The module looks at mechanistic versus organic systems,
adherence to classical principles of organisation, and technology as a base factor. It
enables you to critically analyse organisational climates and compares the technical
and social foundations of organisations. Management of the organisation and its
operations are brought together, allowing you to formulate strategic decisions involving
design and operations. You will then learn how to make decisions relating to capacity
planning, product design, process design, layout of facilities, facility location selection,
and you will learn to understand the ripple effect, and how to influence operational
decisions relating to quality assurance, scheduling, inventory management, and project
management.
38
Business Statistics
Good decision making in companies and organisations is driven by the correct
understanding and interpretation of data, and the presentation of information. This
module will enable you to use the understanding of analytical and descriptive statistics,
research methods and statistical tests to develop methods and solutions that will
enable good decision making in business scenarios that are uncertain and possibly
risky. The module will cover descriptive statistics, including the collection, description,
analysis and summary of data, as well as probability and correlation. Areas such as
linear regression and the test of hypotheses are also covered.
Research Methodology
During this module you will explore a specific area of interest within international
business and management in greater depth. Transferable skills in research, information
and project management will be developed, equipping you for the continuously
changing business environment. The aim of this module is to enable you to undertake a
self-managed process of systematic academic enquiry within the domain of
management. Also, you will learn to recognise and critically evaluate different business
and management research designs and the assumptions upon which they are based.
You will be able to develop a structured programme of research in pursuit of your
Masters Dissertation based upon informed choices about the research designs,
techniques and procedures to be followed. You will also be enabled to conduct
research in a systematic, rigorous and critically reflective manner and synthesise data
from a wide variety of sources having due regard to issues of general application,
validity and reliability within an acceptable dissertation format. You will be able to
demonstrate capacity and competence in critical self-evaluation with respect to
personal development.
Business Intelligence & Analytics
Historically, departmental thinking in the business world has been common procedure.
However, clients, shareholders and other stakeholders have become much more
articulate and demanding. As a result, the decision cycle needs to be shortened and the
companys personnel have to be empowered to take decisions at lower organizational
levels. This requires integrated information flows that connect the strategic, tactical and
operational levels. Company performance is highly dependent on achieving that. One
should learn to be aware of this relationship and be inclined to make a substantial
positive contribution to it, partly because many companies are still struggling with it.
During this module you will learn to develop a good insight into the problems caused by
disintegrated information and management systems and be equipped to contribute to
building up an adequate strategy of performance management, involving state-of-theart ICT. You will acquire knowledge and understanding in the areas of strategic
intelligence (e.g. performance indicators), financial intelligence (in particular
budgeting), business intelligence (e.g. balanced scorecard, performance measurement,
and benchmarking), analytical intelligence (e.g. pithead business problem-solving), and
performance management infrastructure (in particular data warehousing).
Communication
39
Communication skills are essential in getting across your suggestions and proposals.
When you are heading for changes in strategies and behaviour, acceptance,
cooperation and adequate follow-up cannot be taken for granted. In this module, you
will learn to deal with these issues. Although there are always imponderable aspects at
play, an interesting body of knowledge exists that can be of great help, in particular in
the areas of negotiation, coaching & mentoring, and conflict mediation. The subject will
delve into these areas with the aid of theories, cases, and interactive discourse.
Intercultural communication aspects will be taken into account as a major focus point.
You will learn to apply basic models in order to deal with acceptance, cooperation, and
follow-up issues. This module also provides a basis for doing research that brings to
light how acceptance, cooperation and follow-up can be promoted within a particular
organisation.

The Politics of Modern Social Movements
This course examines continuities and transformations in both the study and practice
of modern political and social movements. The course explores why movements
emerge, how they develop, and what they accomplish. We study several dimensions of
collective action, including their organization, leadership, ideology or programmatic
content, and objectives. Our case studies are rich and diverse, spanning actors and
geographic regions, yet we consciously draw comparisons across the cases concerning
movements' origins, the context of power relations and political positioning within
society. We also seek to understand the sometimes powerful, sometimes subtle
influences of social movements on the nature of socioeconomic, gender, racial, ethnic,
national and transnational relations today.
