Senior Project Proposal
October 28, 2015
A. Abstract
The title of my paper is, Elder Abuse: The Challenges faced with in-home care I
would like to do a two part project that includes teaching a class and holding an event that I will
call, Seniors and Seniors, Bingo Night.
The reason I chose this topic is because many people dont realize that our elderly are
getting abused. Our elders are just as important as our youth in the community. No one loses
their basic human rights based on age. The overall goal for this project is to raise awareness
because this problem can be prevented. I want to elaborate on the possibilities to help the issue
from expanding. The people that will benefit from this project will not only be myself and my
learning process, but FC Students and the community we live in. By making people more aware
of their surroundings, they are more likely to report and incident of Elder Abuse no matter the
dilemmas behind their reasoning. Theyre doing it because it is the right choice to make no
matter the consequences.
The questions that will be driving my research are: What ethical theories can I apply to
the reasons behind people getting abuse? What ethical principles can I apply to both, solving
the problem and future prevention? Where and when did elder abuse first come about?
When did the legal system first recognize that Elders needed laws to protect them? What was
the first case pertaining to elder abuse and the worst case on record? What are the ethical
dilemmas that the elders are facing because of abuse? For the duration of this project I want to
keep the majority of my focus on the issues within in-home care.

To make this a successful project I will have to depend on myself. This includes bringing
the necessary materials that my facility that I have chosen cannot provide. I will be also getting
sponsors for the event that include food and other small prizes.
What I hope for is that I will be able to get about 10 or 15 people together to help with
the setup of Bingo Night. I would ask Ms. Phillips, if this project gets approved, to award
volunteer hours for the hard work and effort put into helping me make my project a success.
My senior project consultant will be Mr. Aaron Pratt. I have worked closely with Mr.
Pratt throughout my high school career and he has always been there to push me in the right
direction. He was my AP European History teacher my freshman year and my Ethics teacher my
junior year. By choosing and being accepted by Mr. Pratt I am really excited about making this
project a reality. To think of an idea and make it something bigger in the environment of my
peers is an amazing opportunity and I know Mr. Pratt will help me pave the road to get there.

D. PROJECT DOCUMENTATION
I, Morgan Brooke Rodgers, will document my project in the following ways

Video Logs/Journal documenting my progress and how things are going up to the day

of the event
Pictures for when I teach the class and the night of
Teacher/Student surveys to show how I did and what was learned
E. PROJECT JUSTIFICATION
I want to do a two part project because I feel that just teaching a class isnt
challenging myself and putting forth my best effort.
With teaching a class the main purpose is to inform, discuss and rationalize about
how elder abuse is an issue. I want to have a wide range of discussion contributing to
what I learned with writing my paper. I will be able to spread my knowledge about what I
learned and how FC students can apply this information to their life.
The idea behind Bingo Night is to spend a couple of hours with FC Seniors and
the seniors of Virginia Beach. FC seniors would adopt a senior for the night, spending
time with them and letting them feel more a part of our community. Admission would be
an item that can be directly donated to the facility and free admission for those 65 and

older. If money donations are collected it will go to the National Center of Elder Abuse
(NCEA) in Washington DC. I would like this to be something open to the community
because I want to reach everyone, not just those within the walls of First Colonial. This
would include all senior citizens in our area and any other locals that would wish to
attend.
F. PROJECT-PAPER CONNECTION
Senior year is one of the most important and exciting years in a High schoolers
life. For Senior citizens being a senior is retiring from a job and living comfortably till
the end of days. The object of, Senior and Seniors Bingo night is to bring two different
kinds of people together in one place, even if it is only one night. I want to raise
awareness for the young people of the twenty-first century into what is going on around
them. Getting seniors and seniors together to make a positive impact on how they view
their community. Elder abuse is an issue that is becoming more prevalent in societies. By
giving teens a sneak-peek into the way these older folks are living makes a statement of
how they will live in the future when their future comes. I want to show that everyone is
equal no matter what age or how they live their life in the world. No one loses their rights
because they age. With this project I hope to show some light on a cause undermined and
make a positive impact on future generations.
If I were to instruct any class on the topic of Elder Abuse I would include Criminal law
including sexual assault and battery, neglect, false imprisonment, and financial abuse. Also
the tort law of Medical Malpractice. While also providing specific examples from cases in
other years. Potentially, with instructing an Ethics class I would be able to dig deep and
provide examples relevant to the class itself. I will be able to discuss issues pertaining to
Elder abuse and be talking to students who really understand why my topic was chosen and

where it was heading. I want to provoke feelings and be able to make someone emotional.
This is an issue that shouldnt be happening but it is. Going back again to the first section, no
one should lose their rights because they are old. No one should be considered less than.
Applying ethics to my paper for example, the ethical dilemmas of an elder telling something
they are being abused versus the retaliation of the abuser. Which one would be the best and
benefit the most people Deontology Ethics, the morality of an action. If I were to teach a
Government class it would be for the range of discussion. Talking about the area in which we
live and how Elder Abuse is making an impact on our everyday lives. An example of this
would be talking about our great grandma getting abused in her home and no one knowing
about it. How would that make you feel? Our Elders are why we are here today and there is
no one else wiser than them. It is important to consider all options when looking at a topic
such as this. It is important to go in a gentle direction but make sure if im trying to make an
impact, make it hit hard home. We would have a group discussion on why people are doing
this, what makes them think this way, why are they getting away with it? I want them to be
able to see both sides of the story ethics class included. For both of these classes I will be
able to in cooperate legal cases and documents that will both intrigue the mind and push for
discussion based on the questions that are driving my research, as read above.
G. ACADEMIC HONESTY
Academic dishonesty is any form of cheating, plagiarism or misconduct that can
relation to an academic exercise. I acknowledge that if I am academic dishonest I will not
graduate with the Legal Studies Academy of First Colonial High School and be sent back
to my home school. Being a part of LSA is an honor. The rules are set in place for a
reason. I understand that I am held to a high standard of academics and expected to
follow the rules in place. When using work that is not my own I will adhere to the

guidelines and cite the source properly to document my paper, project/portfolio and my
presentation.
I understand that any academic dishonesty by me on any part of the project will
result in failure of the Senior Project and forfeiture of the Legal Studies Seal on my High
School Diploma.
