Formyproject,IwillbepresentingattheStudentLearningConferenceattheJohns
HopkinsAppliedPhysicsLaboratory,alongwithtwootherclinicalmedstudents.Formysection
ofthepresentationslot,Iwillbeexplainingarecentlyexpandingissueinthefieldofemergency
medicine,nonurgentuseoftheemergencyroom.Specifically,Iwillbediscussingthecontribution
ofsubstanceabuserelatedcasestothesenonurgentvisitations.Thisrapidlygrowingissueisof
vitalimportanceinthemedicalworldinthecurrenttimeperiod,asnonurgentusedetractsfrom
thehealthcarebudgetandalsoblocksactualemergencycasesfrombeingseenbythedoctor.
Furthermore,emergencycaredoesnotprovideassufficientfollowupcareasaprimarycaredoes,
andinsomecasesespecially,suchasdrugabuseandaddictioncare,followupisimperative.
InordertoresolvetheissueoffrequentERvisitsduetosubstanceuseandabuse,Iwillbe
presentingasolutionIhaveanalyzednumerousstudieson,andadvocateitseffectivenessinthe
hopesthatthiswillencourageitswidespreadimplementation.Inmypresentation,Iwillspeak
aboutthesuccessofspecializedandmoreextensivetreatmentproceduresforpatientsseeking
relieffromdrugrelatedsymptomsthathavedecreasedoveralldrugusage,whichwilldecreasethe
amountofdrugrelatedcasesintheED.Theproceduresareacombinationofacasemanagement
approach,screenings,medication,briefinterventionsessions,andtreatmentreferrals.By
presentingthefindingsofthesestudies,Iwillhopefullyaidinsolvingthiswidespreadissueby
advocatingfortheinstitutionoftheseprocedures.
Myaudiencewillincludehealthcareadministratorsaswellasdoctorsandnurses
themselves,whoIwillhaveaccesstothroughmyinternshiporperhapsevenatthestudent
learningconference.Mypresentationwillhavethemostrelevancetothem,andiftheyagreewith
myfindings,theywillbethemostinfluentialinimplementingit.Remedyingthisissuewillsolve
problemsforbothsubstanceabusersandemergencydepartmentemployees.

Haveyoueverheardhorrorstoriesofenduringover8hourwaitsjusttobeseenbya
doctorintheemergencyroom?Intodayssociety,moreandmoreindividualsarefrequently
visitingtheER,showninChoudhrysresearchthatover18billiondollarsarewastedannually
foravoidableEDvisits.ThroughexperiencesatMercyHospital,theUniversityofMaryland
MedicalCenter,andHowardCountyGeneralHospital,ithasbeenobservedthatmajor
contributorstoemergencyroomovercrowdingarethosewhosufferfromunregulatedchronic
disordersincludingmentalillnessandsubstanceaddiction,andthosewhodonothaveimmediate
accesstoprimarycare.Thesefrequentvisitorsnotonlystrainhealthcarefunding,butalsoleadto
theinefficienttreatment.Thefollowingsessionwilldiscusshowmentalillness,substance
addiction,andthelackofpatientprimarycare,arerelatedtounnecessaryemergencyroomusage,
andhowthismaybecontrolled.
