H. DIFFERENTIATION

Thislessonisdifferentiatedtomeettheneedsofthedifferentreadinglevels
presentinmyreadingclass.Thestudentsaregroupedamongsimilarreadersto
themselves.Eachgroupsbookwaschosentobeonhisorherlevel.Thisallows
allthestudentstoworkonthingsthatareappropriatefortheirreadingabilities.
Allofthebooksareonthetopicofouterspace,butaredifferentiatedtothecontent
levelsofeachgroup.Thiscreatesunityintheclassandwholegroupdiscussions
wecanhave,whilestillcateringtothereadingneedsofeachstudent.

I. WHATCOULDGOWRONGWITHTHISLESSON
AND

ABOUTIT?

Theearthquakedrillisgoingonduringmylesson,soIamunawareofhow
longthiswilllast.Ihaveplannedforgroupstolastfrom15to20minuteseach,but
thistimecanbeeasilyadjusteddependingontheamountoftimewehave.Ihave
overplannedjustincasetheearthquakedrilltakeslesstimethanIoriginally
thought.Thetimescanbeadjustedifneeded.Thisdrillcanalsocausesome
inattentionfromthestudents.IfthisoccursIwillreguideindividualbehaviors.
Thestudentsmaynotgettofinishthewritingpartofthesmallgrouptime.If
not,Iwillallowthestudentstofinishitduringmorningworkthefollowingday.If
thestudentsfinishearlywiththeirwriting,theycaneditoneanothersworkand
lookforwaystheirwritingcanbeimproved.
