Tassels and Fringes

1. What is a fringe / tassel?

2. Where do we put the fringes / tassels?
3. What is significant about the blue cord?
4. Who should wear fringes / tassels?
This study is NOT to judge one another but a personal study to better
understand the Word clearly.
Num. 15:38-41
Vs.38Speak unto the children of Israel, and bid them that they make them fringes in the borders of their
garments throughout their generations, and that they put upon the fringe of the borders a ribband of
blue:
Vs.39And it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all the
commandments of Yah, and do them; and that ye seek not after your own heart and your own eyes, after
which ye use to go a whoring:
Vs.40That ye may remember, and do all my commandments, and be set holy unto your Elohim.
Vs.41I am Yah your Elohim, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your Elohim: I am Yah your
Elohim.

1. What is a fringe?
Lets look at the word fringe in the Strongs Concordance and Ancient
Hebrew.
Fringe (#H6734) a floral or wing-like projection, that is, a forelock of hair,
a tassel
(#AH1409-M N4) Blossom: a tassel or lock of hair as blossoms
The definition of the Ancient Hebrew root for blossom The function of the
blossom is to produce the fruit of the tree.
Ezek. 8:3
And he put forth the form of an hand, and took me by a lock of mine head; and the spirit lifted me up between
the earth and the heaven, and brought me in the visions of Elohim to Jerusalem, to the door of the inner gate
that looketh toward the north; where was the seat of the image of jealousy, which provoketh to jealousy.

Lock (#H6734) - a floral or wing like projection, that is, a fore lock of hair, a
tassel: - fringe
Ezekiel is taken by a loc of his hair by a messenger.
Q: Why is the word fringe (tzitzit) used to describe Ezekiels hair?
A: If the messenger grabbed a bunch of his locs in his hand then it the hair
at the end of the messengers hand would look like a blossom.
Deut. 22:12
Thou shalt make thee fringes upon the four quarters of thy vesture, wherewith thou coverest thyself.

Fringe (#H1434) twisting; thread that is a tassel or festoon; fringe

(#AH2054-b) Tassel: something that is made from twisted fibers.

In Num. 15:38 the word fringe means blossom and in Deut. 22:12 the word
fringe means twisting.
Matt.23:5
But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders
of their garments

Yahusha is talking to the scribes and pharisees. He is admonishing

them for making themselves important and putting themselves above
the people.
He mentions that they lengthen their tzitzit on their garments.
Enlarge (#G3170) to make great, increase
The hebrew word for #G3170 is #H1431(fringe).
#H1431 goes back to fringe (to twist like a cord) Deut.22:12
Borders (#G2899) a fringe or tassel
The hebrew word for #G2899 is #H6734(tzitzit).
#H6734 goes back to tzitzit (blossom) Num.15:38
This is 1 example showing that the borders (fringe/tassel) is something
that you can make long or short. So the question still remains whether
the fringe/tassel according to scripture is placed at the edge/wing of
the garment or placed around the bottom hem similar to the Native
Americans.
Matt.9:20
And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched
the hem of his garment

Hem (#G2899) fringe or tassel (tzitzit)

According to the Torah (Lev.15:25-27), anyone who was touched by
woman with an isue of blood is considered unclean. Yahusha would have
been considered unclean BUT He is the lamb that makes all things clean.
Thats why she was healed.

Luke 8:42-44
For he had one only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she lay a dying. But as he went the people
thronged him. And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon
physicians, neither could be healed of any, Came behind him, and touched the border of his garment: and
immediately her issue of blood stanched.

Border (#G2899) fringe or tassel (tzitzit)

Mark 6:56
And whithersoever he entered, into villages, or cities, or country, they laid the sick in the streets, and besought
him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment: and as many as touched him were made
whole.

Border (#G2899) fringe or tassel (tzitzit)

The sick were brought to Yahusha so that they could at least touch the
BORDER of his garment.
There was healing everytime the fringes of the Messiah Yahusha were
touched.
Matt.14:36
And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and
brought unto him all that were diseased; And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his
garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.

Hem (#G2899) fringe or tassel (tzitzit)

Q: Why is a tzitzit in Num.15:38 considered a blossom in the Ancient
Hebrew?
The Strongs definition of a tzitzit is blossom. The root of tzitzit means
the fruit of a blossom is to produce the fruit of a tree.
Heres an examplewhen I planted my zuchinni seeds last year, my
plants grew and produced a beautiful yellow blossom. I was expecting
a big harvest of zuchinni BUT, I got no fruit. The blossoms eventually
died but produced no fruit. I believe that the problem was the soil. The

soil was bad and was depleted of any nutrients. (Matt. 13- Parable of
the soil)
Matt. 21:17-20 - And he left them, and went out of the city into Bethany; and he lodged there. Now

in
the morning as he returned into the city, he hungered. And when he saw a fig tree in the way, he
came to it, and found nothing thereon, but leaves only, and said unto it, Let no fruit grow on
thee henceforward for ever. And presently the fig tree withered away. And when the disciples saw it,
they marvelled, saying, How soon is the fig tree withered away!

Yahusha is hungry and sees a fig tree that has no fruit. The tree is
cursed and immediately withers. It is a waste
Matt. 12:33 - Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit
corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit.

Matt. 7:16-20 - Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree
cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not
forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

A tree is known by its fruit. A good tree produces good fruit while a bad
tree yields bad fruit.
In Num.15:39-40, the Torah explains the purpose of a tzitzit.
Vs.39And it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all the
commandments of Yah, and do them; and that ye seek not after your own heart and your own eyes,
after which ye use to go a whoring:
Vs.40That ye may remember, and do all my commandments, and be set holy unto your Elohim.

Its to look upon and remember the commandments of Yah.

So I believe the tzitzit is meant to produce good fruit in ones life.
(speech, actions and thoughts)
Someone who doesnt look intently into Yahs laws wont produce fruit
at all.
Remember we just read about the Scribes and Pharasees who even
though they wore fringes/tassels and made them long, their life
produced bad fruit. For they did not look upon and remember the
commandments of Yah. Instead they observed the traditions of man.
2. Where do we put fringes?

Num.15:38 says to put the tzitzit on the borders of your garment.

Speak unto the children of Israel, and bid them that they make them fringes in the borders of their
garments throughout their generations, and that they put upon the fringe of the borders a ribband
of blue:

Borders (#H3671) an edge or extremity, wing, (of garment) a flap, (of

the earth) a quarter, (of a building) pinnacle.
A pinnacle point of something ^
(#AH2269-N) Wing, also the wing of a garment.

Isaiah 11:12 - And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel,
and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth.

Isaiah states that Yah wil gather all the dispersed of Yahudah (Judah)
from the 4 corners of the earth.
Corners (#H3671) means the same as Borders.
1Samuel 24:4-11 (KJV)
1Sa 24:4 And the men of David said unto him, Behold the day of which Yah said unto thee, Behold, I will
deliver thine enemy into thine hand, that thou mayest do to him as it shall seem good unto thee. Then
David arose, and cut off the skirt of Saul's robe privily.
1Sa 24:5 And it came to pass afterward, that David's heart smote him, because he had cut off
Saul's skirt.
1Sa 24:6 And he said unto his men, The Elohim forbid that I should do this thing unto my master, the Elohims
anointed, to stretch forth mine hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of the Elohim.
1Sa 24:7 So David stayed his servants with these words, and suffered them not to rise against Saul. But Saul
rose up out of the cave, and went on his way.
1Sa 24:8 David also arose afterward, and went out of the cave, and cried after Saul, saying, My master the king.
And when Saul looked behind him, David stooped with his face to the earth, and bowed himself.
1Sa 24:9 And David said to Saul, Wherefore hearest thou men's words, saying, Behold, David seeketh thy hurt?
1Sa 24:10 Behold, this day thine eyes have seen how that the Elohim had delivered thee to day into mine hand
in the cave: and some bade me kill thee: but mine eye spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth mine hand
against my master; for he is the Elohims anointed.
1Sa 24:11 Moreover, my father, see, yea, see the skirt of thy robe in my hand: for in that I cut off
the skirt of thy robe, and killed thee not, know thou and see that there is neither evil nor
transgression in mine hand, and I have not sinned against thee; yet thou huntest my soul to
take it.

Skirt (#H3671) same as border and corner from previous scriptures

David secretly cuts off a piece of Sauls skirt without him knowing. So
the skirt has to be a wing or edge of a piece of garment (robe) inorder
for it to be cut off without Saul knowing.
1Samuel 24:4-5; 11 (Scriptures Version)

1Sa 24:4 And the men of Dawid said to him, See, the day of which said to you, See, I am giving your
enemy into your hand, and you shall do to him as it seems good to you! And Dawid arose and gently
cut off a corner of Shauls robe.
1Sa 24:5 And it came to be afterward that the heart of Dawid smote him because he had cut the robe of
Shaul.
1Sa 24:11 And my father, see! Yea, see the corner of your robe in my hand! For in that I cut off the corner
of your robe, and did not slay you, know and see that there is neither evil nor rebellion in my hand, and I
have not sinned against you, while you are hunting my life to take it.

Haggai 2:12 - If one bear holy flesh in the skirt of his garment, and with his skirt do touch bread, or
pottage, or wine, or oil, or any meat, shall it be holy? And the priests answered and said, No.

Once again the garment the priest were wearing had an edge(fold).
Skirt (#H3671) is the same as border and corner.
Malachi 4:2 - But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his
wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.

Healing (#H4832) a cure, medicine, deliverance

#AH1454-E(a) Health
Wings (#H3671) edge/flap (same as borders, corner and skirt)
When you look at the wings of a bird, the are pointed at the tip <0>
Malachi says there is healing in the wings of The Most High. When
Yahusha walked the earth, He wore fringes (tzitzit) on the border
(corner/flap/wings) of His garment.
Q: What happened when people touched His tzitzit?
A: They were healed! Physically and spiritually. Showing that there
were healing in his wings.
For the Sun of Righteousness refer to Isaiah 60:1-3.
Zechariah 8:23 - Thus saith the Yah of hosts; In those days it shall come to pass, that ten men shall
take hold out of all languages of the nations, even shall take hold of the skirt of him that is a Jew (Yahudi),
saying, We will go with you: for we have heard that Yah is with you.

10 men taking hold of the edge or wing of a Yahudites garment.

Revelation 7:1 - And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth,
holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any
tree.

Corners (#G1137) an angle, corner, quarter.

Imagine that the earth is flat. There are 4 messengers standing at each
corner (angle).
Exodus 28:33-34 - And beneath upon the hem of it thou shalt make pomegranates of blue, and of
purple, and of scarlet, round about the hem thereof; and bells of gold between them round about:
Exo 28:34 A golden bell and a pomegranate, a golden bell and a pomegranate, upon the hem of
the robe round about.

Round about (#H5439) a circle

#AH1324-B(b) around
Hem (#H7757) to hang down, a bottom edge.

This is an example of the scripture being specific about the placement

of bells being placed around the bottom hem of a garment.
This is different from where the fringes (tzitzit) are placed in Num.15:38
So from my understanding, the fringes (tzitzit) are to placed on the edges
(corner) of a garment not completely around a garment similar to the Native
Americans.
Num.15:38 - Speak unto the children of Israel, and bid them that they make them fringes in the borders
of their garments throughout their generations, and that they put upon the fringe of the borders a ribband
of blue:

Ribband (#H6616) twine, thread, wire

#AH-2650(b) Cord made of twisted fibers
The word ribband is not like a flat ribbon we are familiar with. The
blue in the tzitzit is supposed to be a cord of many twisted fibers.
3. What is the significance of the blue cord?

There are many theories of what the blue means. Some say it means
the law. Others say it means blue like the heavens. However I
personally believe that the blue means to be set-apart.
Lets look at this more closely.
Num.4:6-12
Num 4:6 And shall put thereon the covering of badgers' skins, and shall spread over it a cloth wholly of blue,
and shall put in the staves thereof.
Num 4:7 And upon the table of shewbread they shall spread a cloth of blue, and put thereon the
dishes, and the spoons, and the bowls, and covers to cover withal: and the continual bread shall
be thereon:
Num 4:8 And they shall spread upon them a cloth of scarlet, and cover the same with a covering of badgers'
skins, and shall put in the staves thereof.
Num 4:9 And they shall take a cloth of blue, and cover the candlestick of the light, and his lamps,
and his tongs, and his snuffdishes, and all the oil vessels thereof, wherewith they minister unto
it:
Num 4:10 And they shall put it and all the vessels thereof within a covering of badgers' skins, and shall put it
upon a bar.
Num 4:11 And upon the golden altar they shall spread a cloth of blue, and cover it with a
covering of badgers' skins, and shall put to the staves thereof:
Num 4:12 And they shall take all the instruments of ministry, wherewith they minister in the
sanctuary, and put them in a cloth of blue, and cover them with a covering of badgers' skins,
and shall put them on a bar:
Exo 28:3 And thou shalt speak unto all that are wise hearted, whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom,
that they may make Aaron's garments to consecrate him, that he may minister unto me in the priest's office.
Exo 28:4 And these are the garments which they shall make; a breastplate, and an ephod, and a
robe, and a broidered coat, a mitre, and a girdle: and they shall make holy garments for
Aaron thy brother, and his sons, that he may minister unto me in the priest's office.
Exo 28:5 And they shall take gold, and blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine linen.
Exo 28:6 And they shall make the ephod of gold, of blue, and of purple, of scarlet, and fine
twined linen, with cunning work.
Exo 28:7 It shall have the two shoulderpieces thereof joined at the two edges thereof; and so it shall be joined
together.
Exo 28:8 And the curious girdle of the ephod, which is upon it, shall be of the same, according
to the work thereof; even of gold, of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen.
Exo 28:37 And thou shalt put it on a blue lace, that it may be upon the mitre; upon the forefront
of the mitre it shall be.
Exo 39:29 And a girdle of fine twined linen, and blue, and purple, and scarlet, of needlework; as
the LORD commanded Moses.
Exo 39:30 And they made the plate of the holy crown of pure gold, and wrote upon it a writing,
like to the engravings of a signet, HOLINESS TO THE LORD.
Exo 39:31 And they tied unto it a lace of blue, to fasten it on high upon the mitre; as the LORD
commanded Moses.

These are the items with blue:

High Priest clothing

The veil in the Holy of Holies in the Tabernacle (blue, scarlet, purple and

gold)
When the ark was moved, all of the set-apart items were covered in an
all blue covering. (showbread, dishes, lampstand, vessels, golden
slaughter place and all the utensils) These were the set-apart items in
the Tabernacle
So if the blue represents set-apart then the blue in the tzitzit is to
make us set-apart. The spiritual purpose of the tzitzit is for us to
remember the commandments of Yah.
I once read that the tzitzit is like a uniform of the children of Yisrael.
Just like a police or military wears a specific uniform showing who they
work for, so it is with the tzitzit (fringes). It also physically shows who
we serve as well.
We understand that the color of the fringes/tassels can be controversial
however from our studies the word blue in hebrew is tekeleth. The hebrew
word tekeleth is the same color of the sky.
4. Who should wear the tzitzits?
All the children of Yisrael. (men, women and children)
Most of the time when Yah is speaking to the children is Yisrael, Hes
speaking to everyone. Hes not distinguishing between men and
women but talking to Yisrael as a collective people.
These are examples in scripture where Yah is speaking to the children of
Yisrael as a whole.
Keeping the Sabbath:
Exo_31:16 Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their
generations, for a perpetual covenant.
Exo_31:17 It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the Elohim made heaven
and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.

Following the Commandments of Yah:

Exo_35:1 And Moses gathered all the congregation of the children of Israel together, and said unto them,
These are the words which the Elohim hath commanded, that ye should do them.

Dietary Laws:
Lev_11:2 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, These are the beasts which ye shall eat among all the beasts
that are on the earth.

Yah is the Mighty One of Yisrael:

Lev_18:2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, I am the Yah your Elohim.

In the Browns-Drivers-Briggs Dictionary is shows all the words related to the

word children (#H1121):
1A) son, grandson, child, member of a group
1a) son, male child
1b) grandson
1c) children (plural - male and female)
1d) youth, young men (plural)
1e) young (of animals)
1f) sons (as characterisation, i.e. sons of injustice [for unrighteous men] or sons of Yah [for messengers])
1g) people (of a nation) (plural)
1h) of lifeless things, i.e. sparks, stars, arrows (figuratively)
1i) a member of a guild, order, class

So from my understanding the fringes in Num.15:38 are to be placed on the

4 corners of our garments and not around the bottom of the hem similar to
the Native Americans. It is to have a blue cord (twisted fibers).
I pray that this study was able to give clarity and understanding of what
fringes are and how we are to wear them.
HalleluYahMay The Most High Yah be Esteemed Forever.
