BASIC
TERMINOLOGY
BENEFITS OF
IMPLEMENTING
MODULAR
COORDINATION
Facilitates cooperation between building designers, manufacturers, distributors,
contractors and authorities.
Enables buildings to be so dimensioned that they can be erected with standard
components without undue restriction on freedom of design.
Permits a flexible type of standardization, which encourages the use of a limited
number of standardized building components for the construction of different types
of buildings.
Optimizes the number of standard sizes of building components.
Encourages interchangeability of components, in whatever materials, forms or
methods
Simplifies site operations by rationalizing setting out,
Positioning and assembly of building components.
Ensures dimensional coordination between installation (equipment, storage units,

Modular/Superimposed Grids
Formed with intervals of multi

MODULE
Mh = 3M (300mm)
The horizontal planning module for structural framework is based on the functional
requirements of the building and the components to be used for economic design.

PRECAST WALLS
Based on structural functions can be
Load bearing
Non load bearing
Shear walls.
Based on construction can be
Homogeneous walls could be
solid, hollow or ribbed; and
Non homogeneous walls

concrete, with filler blocks .
One way system transfers loads to supporting members
in one direction only.
E.g channel slabs, hollow core slabs, channels & ties
system.
Two way system imparting loads on the four edges.
E.g. two way ribbed or waffle slab.
STAIRCASE SYSTEMS
Consist of single flights with inbuilt risers and
treads.
Flights are normally unidirectional transferring
loads to supporting landing.

DESIGN
CONSIDERATIONS
Structure should be analyzed as a monolithic one and the joints in them
designed to take the forces of a equivalent discrete system.
Resistance to horizontal loading shall be provided by having
appropriate moment and shear resisting joints or placing shear walls in
two directions at right angles.
The individual components shall be designed, taking into consideration
the appropriate end conditions and loads in accordance with structural
design, section 1 loads, forces and effects
Members should also be designed for handling, erection and impact
loads that might be expected during handling & erection.
