Nature is our cradle. It feeds our bodies and nurtures our souls. We enjoy its beauty, especially in
our beautiful Pacific ocean countries.
But from time to time, Nature reminds us of our own fragile status, and of the consequences of the
action of humans who, too often forget the mandatory respect that must be paid to the planet we all share.
We, Pacific Islanders, are not the main culprits but indeed the victims of larger nations who have
contributed to climate change that we get to experience first hand.
We read, listen, and watched as super cyclone Winston hit FIJI, spreading fear, despair, and sadly,
also death. In maohi nui we do relate to such fury, as we had our share of cyclones in the last decades. We
pray for our Fijian brothers and sisters. Yet, in the aftermath of havoc, we are sure that under your leadership,
and with the courage of your People, FIJI shall recover, rebuild, and bloom again.
On behalf of the People of Maohi nui, and all elected members of the UPLD Tavini Huiraatira no
te ao Maohi, please convey to the great People of FIJI our deepest compassion. Rest assured that here, in
Maohi nui, we will gather and act in order to seek ways of helping, in any way we can.
Te aroha ia rahi.
