ts not easy to follow in someones footsteps. People will always judge

whether youre filling your predecessors shoes adequately.
We revere those who chart their own course and attain their own
individual success. Its just as difficult, however, to preserve and further a
legacy, to start out on a path thats been cleared and continue on well beyond.
It can also be very rewarding.
Anyone whos ever worked in a family business knows the extra
responsibility and weight it carries. Its not just a business. Its your familys
name and reputation on the line. Some fail because they lack the vision and
passion to carry on the mission; others use the foundation to reach higher
than their predecessors ever imagined.

Rowells Sewer & Drain, featured in this issue of Cleaner, is a great

example. Mandie and Ian Hagan moved back home to Northfield, New
Hampshire, 15 years ago to take the reins of her fathers business after he
passed away. Growing the business without losing touch with the familyoriented values that had made it so successful was a formidable challenge.
The Hagans sought to maintain the relationships and reputation that
had been built over years in business, but they made the business their own
and pushed it to new heights by adding new services, using their marketing
savvy and putting an emphasis on employee development.
Since 2001, the company which initially focused on cleaning sewer
lines and pumping septic tanks has expanded into septic system design
and installations, larger sewer line repair work and commercial lift station
installations. The staff has expanded, too, from three to 15, and the company
also opened a new office and shop with a retail store that sells septic system
parts and components to homeowners.
Kerry Roslinski, owner of Pipe-Eye Sewer Services in Bradford,
Pennsylvania, has also followed in his fathers footsteps.
Roslinski grew up tagging along with his father, who was Bradfords
director of Public Works for 35 years. After graduating from college, Roslinski
operated several small wastewater treatment plants, some on a part-time basis.
In that role he was first exposed to sewer cleaning and inspection technology
when a local sewer authority brought in a company to clean and inspect sewer
lines. He eventually went to work with the company and ultimately struck out
on his own to provide the same services.
The results speak for themselves: Today, he has eight full-time employees,
more than $1.5 million worth of equipment and a service area that covers
western New York and northwestern Pennsylvania. He says much of his
companys success stems from upholding his fathers legacy, with a focus on
customer service and treating people right.
Both of these stories present good examples of the type of people who
make up the fabric of this industry good people following the examples
their parents set, doing business the right way and tasting success as a result.
I hope you can find some inspiration in their stories.
Enjoy this months issue. C

AN EYE FOR

SERVICE
PENNSYLVANIA CONTRACTOR EMBRACES MUNICIPAL SEWER
SERVICES AND CARRIES ON A FAMILY TRADITION
BY K E N W YS O C K Y | P H OTO G R AP HY BY M I K E B R AD LEY

IF ANYONE EVER WAS DESTINED

TO RUN A SEWER SERVICES COMPANY,
ITS KERRY ROSLINSKI.
The son of a Public Works director as well as a former
wastewater treatment plant operator, Roslinski brought
his career full circle in 2003 when he established PipeEye Sewer Services in Bradford, Pennsylvania, a company
that cleans, inspects and grouts sewer lines, laterals and
manholes in the area where he grew up.
In a sense, even the name of the company is pipelinerelated; when Roslinski was about 11 years old, he fell
down and landed on a pipe, which left a half-moon scar
under one eye. So kids at school nicknamed me Pipe
Eye, Roslinski explains. Its very ironic and thats
why in our logo, we use an eye for the dash in Pipe-Eye.
When Roslinski established Pipe-Eye in 2003, it was
the culmination of decades spent in the municipal sewer
arena, dating back to when he was a young boy. Roslinskis
late father, Joseph, served as Bradfords director of Public
Works for 35 years and along the way instilled in his son
the importance of customer service.

20

Cleaner March 2016

When I was a child, I would go out with my father

and ride in street sweepers, salt trucks and so forth,
Roslinski recalls. I grew up in that atmosphere night
and day. People were always calling our house with
problems, and Dad was always right on top of them.
I have to stress the experience I gained from my
father, he adds. I saw the way he treated his employees
through all those years that really carried over, and
in the end, I took a lot from that. He treated people with
dignity and respect. If you dont have good employees
with some longevity, youre just not going to make it in
this industry. My father taught me that you have to treat
employees just as youd like to be treated.
Roslinski says much of his companys success stems
from upholding his fathers legacy, as well as embracing
advanced technology and presenting a professional image.
The results speak for themselves: eight full-time employees,
more than $1.5 million worth of equipment, and a service

area that covers western New York and northwestern Pennsylvania. Sewer
cleaning and inspection services generate about 65 percent of the companys
revenue, with the remainder coming from grouting and smoke and dye
testing, he says.
Roslinski also relies heavily on the wealth of experience he gained
working for municipal governments and observing how they operate. I
learned how to interact with the municipal government and gain a good
understanding of how things work, he notes.
PIPELINE TO SUCCESS
After graduating from college with a degree in forestry, oddly enough,
Roslinski started his sewer-centric career by operating several small wastewater

22

treatment plants, some on a part-time basis. After about seven years, he

received his first exposure to sewer cleaning and inspection technology when
a local sewer authority brought in a company from Pittsburgh to clean and
inspect sewer lines.
That really grabbed my attention, he recalls. Operating an inspection
camera was like playing Atari games. I was thrilled by the idea that you
could operate a camera with a joystick.
Eventually, Roslinski joined the company as an operations manager in
Bradford, where he helped expand the firms business base, using connections
hed made during his years as a treatment plant operator. But when the
company was sold to a large nationwide corporation, Roslinski decided he
didnt want to move to Pittsburgh to keep his job and instead struck out on
his own.
While he was no novice to the industry, he still needed advice as well
as financing to invest in equipment. The advice came from a branch of the
University of Pittsburgh, where a business school intern helped him develop
a business plan for free. Local universities are a good resource, he says.
At the University of Pittsburgh, interns had all the software programs and
tools you need to get started. And for a nominal fee, they even filed my
incorporation paperwork.
Then he met with officials at Hi-Vac who eventually agreed to help him
finance an Aquatech vacuum truck. A short time later, he bought a refurbished
grout truck built by CUES. How could a novice businessman afford to buy
such an expensive rig? The resourceful Roslinski did some research and
learned about low-interest loans offered by the City of Bradfords Office of

I have to stress the experience I gained from my father. I saw the way he treated his employees
through all those years that really carried over, and in the end, I took a lot from that.

Economic and Community Development, which promotes small businesses.
They supply half the loan, and a bank provides the other half at interest rates
that are about half of those charged by regular banks, Roslinski explains. I
also used another resource called the North Central Regional Planning and
Development Commission, which covers a four-county area here.
If youre looking to make a major investment that can potentially create
jobs or make current jobs last longer, theyre all for it
as long as you meet certain criteria and report back
to them on your progress in creating and retaining
jobs, he adds. All you have to do is go to a local
county government and ask if theres any financial
assistance available. This is how we financed all our
equipment except for the first vacuum truck.

We primarily clean larger-diameter municipal pipes, Roslinski says.

But we can hook up a smaller lateral hose to clean out smaller pipes.
The company also owns three CUES camera/grout trucks, two built
on a Chevrolet chassis and one on a Ford; theyre all equipped with Graco
grout pumps. The two newer units feature lateral inspection and lateral and
mainline grouting capabilities. For inspections, crews use CUES Ultra Shorty

LARGE ROSTER OF EQUIPMENT

Pipe-Eye now owns three Hi-Vac Aquatech vac
trucks, built on International and Sterling truck
chassis. They feature 10-cubic-yard debris tanks;
1,000- or 1,500-gallon water tanks; Hibon blowers;
and water pumps (80 gpm at 2,000 psi) made by
General Pump.

tracked cameras. Logiball makes the

grouting systems, and Pipe-Eye uses
grout made by Avanti International.
The company also relies on a
smoke-testing machine made by
Cherne; a RIDGID push camera and
several RIDGID locators; a CST/
berger Magnatrac locator; a RIDGID
K-6200 Powersnake for unclogging
3- to 6-inch-diameter lines; jetting
nozzles manufactured by StoneAge
and KEG Technologies; and a
manhole-rehabilitation trailer made
by The Strong Company.
One of my big things is that
I stick with the same equipment all
the time, Roslinski says, explaining

Rob Gault of Pipe-Eye Sewer Services cleans a

manhole prior to rehabilitation, using the spray wand
off a Strong Co. manhole-rehabilitation trailer.

All you have to do is go to a local

county government and ask if theres
any financial assistance available. This
is how we financed all our equipment

Kerry Roslinski
his philosophy about buying
equipment. Because we stick with
the same equipment, our guys know
it inside and out.
I also go to the Water &
Wastewater Equipment, Treatment

every other year, he adds. I take
two different employees each
time, along with my wife, Jennifer
(the companys office manager).
Customers demand the most
updated technology, so were
constantly striving to keep up with
it. Companies that fail to do so
run the risk of losing customers to

Roslinski also says that
Pipe-Eyes emphasis on keeping

image that wows new customers and
promotes word-of-mouth referrals.

not be with brand-new equipment,

CONTRACTOR RELIES ON
GROUT TO KEEP I&I OUT
There are several solutions available to stop infiltration and inflow in manholes, sewer lines and laterals,
but Kerry Roslinski, owner of Pipe-Eye Sewer Services in Bradford, Pennsylvania, prefers chemical
grouting, using equipment made by Logiball.
First developed about 50 years ago, chemical grouting is the oldest trenchless method for stopping
groundwater infiltration into structurally sound sewer systems. Often misunderstood, grouting actually
is a simple and effective way to fix leaks, notes Roslinski, who learned the basics while working as an
operations manager for a sewer cleaning, inspection and grouting company years ago in Bradford.
In a nutshell, heres how grouting works: Technicians mechanically pull a remotely controlled device
called a packer, essentially an inflatable plug, to the location of a sewer line leak. The packer is attached to
hoses that supply both grout and compressed air. When the packer is in place, it injects the grout under
high pressure through failed joints or pipe cracks and into the surrounding soil outside the pipe creating a
durable seal, or collar, that adheres to the pipes exterior. When the packer is removed, it scrapes off any
excess grout thats still inside the line.
The grout does more than just seal cracks or gaps in sewer lines; it also seals, stabilizes and gels with
the soil around it, even filling voids that often occur after backfilling during initial sewer installations. Some
consider grouting superior to pipe lining because it doesnt rely on a bond between a liner and the pipe.
Roslinski embraced grouting because he was already familiar with it. But initially it was a tough sell
when he formed Pipe-Eye in 2003. To pay my bills, I had to beat on peoples doors, he recalls. I did a
lot of free demonstrations to convince people that it wasnt some kind of hoax.
More and more often, grouting is often used in conjunction with pipe lining, he points out. We usually
go through first and grout the joints, then they line it, then we come back and grout the laterals, he
explains.
While its not 100 percent foolproof, Roslinski says grouting is a very effective way to resolve inflow
and infiltration. Lets be honest: We cant keep sewer lines completely water-free, he says. Water finds
a way to get in, no matter what. But we can limit it. The main idea is to drastically reduce the amount of
water getting treated.

is everything. Our equipment isnt dirty or
rusted, and that says a lot about our reputation and our employees. Customers
notice that.
Newer, well-maintained equipment also helps in another area: retaining
quality employees. Thats just one of the things I try to do for my guys,
Roslinski notes. Theyre out in the field doing the hard work. My job is to
ensure they have the latest and the greatest equipment. Who wants to go to
work in a rusty old wreck? My employees make the clients happy, not me. All
I do is provide them with good, up-to-date and safe equipment and they go
out and please the clients.

Customers demand the most updated

technology, so were constantly striving to
keep up with it. Companies that fail to do so
run the risk of losing customers to competitors
who do keep up with the latest technology.

Pipe-Eye to structurally repair manholes, and a new 2015 CUES grout rig.
Before, we could grout and seal manholes to stop inflow and infiltration,
but we didnt have a steadfast way to provide structural rehabilitation, he
explains. The trailer will open up the door for manhole rehab projects,
which go hand in hand with what were already doing here at Pipe-Eye.
I also see the grouting market getting bigger, at least in my neck of the
woods, he adds. Grouting is making a resurgence. Were banking on
grouting and manhole rehab work. C

That raises another point: No matter how nice the equipment is, it takes
great employees to operate it. Our guys make things happen out in the field
every day, he notes.
Looking ahead, Roslinski envisions what he calls controlled growth
for Pipe-Eye as opposed to exponential growth that could strain manpower
and equipment resources and, in turn, decrease customer satisfaction. He also
plans continued investments in new equipment, which he says is imperative to
remaining competitive despite the financial risks involved. As an example, he
points to the recently purchased manhole-rehabilitation trailer, which allows

MONEY MACHINES

Mini but Mighty

Powerful trailer-mounted vac unit helps Indiana contractor fill
a niche market and fit into tight quarters in factories

bout five years ago, Powerclean Industrial Services was looking for
a specialty vac unit a machine small enough to work in spaceconstricted manufacturing plants, yet still powerful enough to suck
up debris, just like a full-size vacuum truck. The answer: a Hurricane
828 trailer-mounted vacuum unit made by Industrial Vacuum Equipment Corp.
The Hurricane ticked off all the boxes on Powercleans list of criteria.
Smaller than a vac truck? Check. (Its roughly 21 feet long, 8 feet wide and 11
1/2 feet tall.) Less expensive? Yes. A powerful blower? Sure thing. (It features a
5,660 cfm unit made by Roots Systems with 28 inches Hg of vacuum power.)
Reliable and easy to operate? Affirmative.
Its a flexible machine, says Steve Barber, president of Powerclean, based
in Fort Wayne, Indiana. We can not only vacuum up and bag dry debris, we
also can hook the Hurricane up to a vacuum box and use the machine like a
vacuum truck as well and without paying $350,000 for a vacuum truck.
Barber has nothing against vac trucks. In fact, Powerclean which is a
fully diversified company that provides industrial cleaning services to a wide
array of heavy-manufacturing customers owns numerous vac trucks made
by Guzzler Manufacturing and Super Products. But Powerclean needed a small
unit to service clients in the glass-manufacturing industry, and the Hurricane
fit the bill.
We have various glass-manufacturing customers that periodically do
furnace tear-outs, where they tear down a worn-out furnace and rebuild it,
Barber explains. Before that happens, we go in and clean out the flumes and
regenerators and so forth. We also have to pull broken refractory bricks through
a 6-inch hose, from 300 to 400 feet away. Then we bag the debris for disposal.

MACHINE: Hurricane 828 trailer-mounted vacuum unit made
by Industrial Vacuum Equipment Corp.
FUNCTION: Vacuuming dry debris in glass-manufacturing plants
FEATURES: 5,660 cfm blower made by Roots Systems Ltd.;
six-wheeled, tri-axle trailer with rectangular tube frame;
325 hp turbocharged diesel engine made by John Deere;
a three-stage filtration system; and a Midland air compressor

The blower system on the Hurricane is comparable to those on our vac

trucks, he adds. The unit does a very good job.
The Hurricane weighs 16,700 pounds; Powerclean employees tow it with
a Ford F-550 dually pickup truck. The vac unit features a six-wheeled, tri-axle
trailer with rectangular tube frame; a 325 hp turbocharged diesel engine made
by John Deere; a three-stage filtration system that offers cyclonic-separation
technology, a baghouse with 37 Teflon-coated, quick-change filter bags and
a dual, high-efficiency blower safety filter; a fully enclosed instrument panel;
and a Midland air compressor.
The units relatively small footprint is a game changer. Weve had several
customers this year do furnace rebuilds where the space where we can put a
unit to complete our portion of a project is very limited, Barber says. Plus
there are a lot of contractors on these projects doing various tasks, so real
estate is very hard to come by. With the Hurricane, were talking about a unit
thats about half the length of a vac truck.

Barber also lauds the Hurricane for its reliability and ease of
operation and maintenance. On these furnace-rebuild projects, weve
got to get our portion of the job finished before the tear-out can begin,
Barber explains. So time is of the essence when we show up. If you
have a breakdown, youre holding up a very big project there are big
dollars involved.
Power is never an issue, Barber says, even when the Hurricane is sucking
broken refractory bricks from several hundred feet away. Its crucial that
we have enough power to pull that material, and we do, he says. In some
applications, the Hurricane bags material in heavy-duty super sacks; the
material gets sucked into a cone and drops into an attached super sack at
intervals set by the operator. In other applications, the unit is attached to the
front of a vacuum box while a hose is attached to the rear of the box; when the
unit starts vacuuming, debris drops into the box before it reaches the Hurricane,
Barber says.
Powerclean employees like the Hurricane because its easy to operate and
clean. Bagged material drops straight into a super sack, which eliminates the
need to clean all the crossover and side tubes found on a vacuum truck. All
they have to do is broom out the cone and move on, Barber says. So when
we leave a site, decontaminating the unit is very simple to do. Sometimes
weve spent four or five hours deconning a vac truck, but we can decon the
Hurricane in a little more than one hour.
Overall, Barber says the Hurricane provides a solid return on investment.
This particular product just made sense economically and for ease of
operation, he says. Randy Bourdo (at Industrial Vacuum Equipment) is a
great guy to work with and the company provides great customer support.
Every time we need something, theyre right there. C

BRINGING EMPLOYEES INTO THE FAMILY

Mandie Hagan cant say enough good things about the employees at Rowells Sewer & Drain, the sewer and septic service company
founded by her late father, Dickie Rowell Jr., which she now owns with her husband, Ian, and her mother, Debbie Rowell.
The people we have right now are phenomenal, she says. Theyre all go-getters that work hard and know what we stand for. Its not just
a job for them its a career, and theyre passionate about what we do.
But assembling a group of enthusiastic, reliable employees didnt happen by accident. Like so many contractors nationwide, finding good
employees isnt always easy for Rowells. But the company increases the odds of doing so by taking specific steps, from the kind of employees
it seeks to how interviews are conducted to the training employees receive, Hagan says.
For starters, Hagan doesnt always look for experienced, skilled labor workers because they often have set ways of doing things including
bad work habits. Im more interested in someone who will work 60 or 70 hours without complaining, she says. And as long as someone has
the drive and desire and willingness to learn, we can train them.
Sometimes the company hires prospective workers on a temporary basis perhaps a week or two for a test drive of sorts. In addition,
Hagan probes a bit in interviews, focusing on what people like to do for fun. If they say they enjoy cooking out and drinking beer, thats not who
Im looking for, she says. We look for people who are passionate about something worthwhile. Sometimes they light up when they talk about
their family. Other times, maybe its motorcycles and snowmobiles, which tells me they like to move and are energetic.
Then theres job training; most employees spend three to six months learning the ropes before theyre allowed to go solo on service calls.
They also receive certification training as required, as well as continuing education. The latter sometimes includes product seminars put on by
equipment manufacturers that Hagan invites to the companys headquarters in Northfield, New Hampshire. If our employees get better, then
we get better, she notes. And if they stay challenged and motivated, they bring in more work.
In addition, the company closes one day each year for a companywide team-building and stress-relief outing for employees and their
significant others at a local casino/resort. We get to know them on an even more personal level and we get a chance to show how much we
appreciate them, Hagan says. And they come back to work refreshed and motivated.
The company also provides other perks to employees. Last year, for instance, the Hagans took employees to the American Football
Conference championship game between the New England Patriots and the Indianapolis Colts. The company also holds family-oriented
summer cookouts and winter snow tubing outings and occasionally gives employees gifts, Hagan says.
Their last names might not be Rowell, but all our employees are family.

thawed, technicians remove the tires and rims from the

companys jetting trailer and attach the ski rims in
their place; from there, a grooming machine tows the
unit to the frozen lines, she explains.
Ians experience as a plumber helped smooth
the ownership transition. Things went well from the
start, Hagan says, noting that even during the deep
recession that hit around 2007, the company continued
to post steady increases in revenue while adding new
employees and services.

We didnt want to grow too big too

fast and jeopardize the quality of
our service. SO WEVE GROWN
STEADILY. We dont move
onto the next step until were sure
the base foundation is solid.
Mandie Hagan
We didnt want to grow too big too fast and
jeopardize the quality of our service, she explains. So
weve grown steadily. We dont move onto the next
step until were sure the base foundation is solid.
But it wasnt always easy, Hagan observes, noting
that it took about five years to get a handle on things.

We had to figure out how to do all the things that Dad

had done himself we didnt have an owners manual,
she explains. We had to get to know the customers and
figure out the best way to do things and how to price our
services. It was a big learning curve, but through it all,
our community continued to support us.
SPREADING THE WORD
The company takes a proactive, multifaceted
approach to marketing. The elements include clean,
well-maintained, vinyl-wrapped trucks that prominently feature the companys logo; a website; a large
billboard that stands in front of the companys new
facility, located in a rehabbed old building that stands
along a state highway; and sponsorship of local events,
such as food drives.
The company also sponsors youth sports teams. In
other instances, it offers customers a $10-off coupon if
they donate goods to a local food drive, she says.
Hagan also works with a marketing consultant
and runs ads on local radio stations; those ads feature
a catchy jingle she had a Nashville company compose.
The cost? About $4,000. Worth it? Absolutely, she
says. Its all about brand recognition. The jingle is
catchy and upbeat it definitely reflects who we are.
To enhance name recognition, the jingle also plays
when customers who call the company are put on hold.
Hagans marketing philosophy centers on investing
money where it gets the best return. We wanted to get

away from phone books step outside the box a little, she says. I try to do
things a little differently. Its more fun and exciting that way.
The company also employs an effective marketing technique that doesnt
cost a penny: Follow-up phone calls asking customers if they were pleased
with the service they received.

We had to figure out how to do all the things that

Dad had done himself WE DIDNT HAVE
AN OWNERS MANUAL. We had to get to
know the customers and figure out the best way
to do things and how to price our services.
Mandie Hagan

The retail store also effectively works as a marketing tool by drawing in

potential customers. Because two national, big-box home centers are located
nearby, the store stocks unique items such as risers and tank lids that
the large retailers typically dont carry. The store offers another benefit: By
combining orders for store inventory with parts needed by technicians to
make repairs, the company gets a better volume discount, which helps reduce
operating costs, she says.
It also eliminates the need for our technicians to make time-consuming
stops to buy parts at big-box retailers, she adds. And the store is right on
a state highway, so it provides easy access for customers. A lot of people just
swing in to make appointments to get their tanks pumped. Weve found that
people still appreciate that face-to-face contact.

KEEPING EXPENSES IN LINE

Of course, as the company offers more services, operating expenses
for items such as insurance, equipment and employee training rise
correspondingly. But you cant get bigger if youre not willing to assume that
risk, Hagan says.
As such, Hagan does a number of things to control operating expenses,
including continually analyzing costs everything from business insurance
to repair parts to ensure the company gets the best possible price;
constantly monitoring profit margins on jobs; analyzing monthly revenue vs.
expenses; and so forth. We really try to avoid getting complacent, she says.
The numbers dont lie, she points out. You have to know your overhead
costs and your pricing has to reflect those costs. You need to do more than
just cover your costs. On the flip side, I know were not the cheapest company
out there. But your service has to be worth something.
Looking ahead, Hagan envisions steady growth as opposed to
exponential increases in sales. With 14 employees families now reliant on
the company for their livelihoods as opposed to just her, Ian and her
mother 15 years ago the Hagans feel obligated to avoid any rash moves that
would jeopardize the companys business prospects.
But no matter what happens, the companys family-rooted values and
emphasis on diverse, quality service will continue to be the backbone of its
operations, preserving Dickie Rowell
Jr.s legacy. We sell our service, our
smiles and our enthusiasm, Hagan
says. Thats just who we are. I

SAFETY FIRST

Identify Workplace Hazards

Free consultations help to protect workers and meet OSHA regulations
By Doug Day

s the manager for the OSHA On-Site Consultation Program in

Wisconsin, Mike Cavanagh knows it sounds too good to be true.
But he offers assurance that employers really can get free and
confidential help to provide a safe workplace and comply with
OSHA regulations without fear of getting a citation.
Consultants from state agencies or universities provide the help to
identify workplace hazards, give advice on OSHA compliance, and assist
with injury and illness prevention programs. The consultants are not OSHA
employees and, with few exceptions, are not allowed to communicate with
OSHA about their findings.
There is a wall between us, explains Cavanagh, an employee of the
University of Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene. Our consultants
and the OSHA inspectors are not allowed to compare notes or have
conversations about clients. Our results are only provided to the company
and to the union, if there is one.
If a consultant would find a serious hazard, however, the company
would be responsible to make corrections within a certain time. We try
our best to be flexible, says Cavanagh. We typically assign a 60-day
correction and will work with companies if its going to take longer. If the
company still fails to fix a serious hazard despite the assistance, it would be
reported to OSHA, though that is rare.
The service is targeted at small and medium-sized businesses, making
about 30,000 visits a year nationwide. In 2014, 55 percent of the companies
employed between one and 25 workers with just 2 percent having more
than 250 employees.
Employer determines extent of assistance
Wisconsins consultants include four safety experts and five industrial
hygienists, one of whom is an engineer. Who gets assigned to a company
depends upon the type of assistance requested. The company determines
the scope of the visit, says Cavanagh. That may entail looking at one issue
such as noise, one department, or the entire company. The employer is in
the drivers seat.
Once work begins, a company may decide to expand the focus or
could cut back. Cavanagh says one example would be if several violations
were found. The company, or the consultant, may decide that it would be
best to correct those before continuing. Consultants also point out obvious
hazards that are outside the scope of the inspection, such as a missing

safety guard, so the company can take immediate action to protect workers.
Testimonials
One firm that has used the service in Wisconsin several times wrote
of one consultant, She is great to work with as she not only points out
hazards/issues that she finds, but also takes time to explain.
Another admitted that there was trepidation about inviting an
inspection but learned that it had risks the company was not aware of.
A lot of companies feel that anything having to do with OSHA is bad
because they are seen as the enemy. The firm used three of the programs
consultants who, they say, put our concerns at ease and were very
informative and helpful.
The consultants can:
Help recognize hazards in the workplace
Suggest general approaches or options for solving a safety or health
problem
Identify the kinds of help available if further assistance is needed
Provide a written report summarizing findings
Assist in developing or maintaining an effective injury and illness
prevention program
Provide training and education for the company and its employees
Requesting assistance
Every state has an On-Site Consultation Program with contacts
listed online at osha.gov/dcsp/smallbusiness/consult.html. Most deal
only with private employers, not municipal or state government entities.
Visits generally begin within a few weeks of the request, depending on
workload and the nature of the issue. Visits are prioritized for things such
as an imminent threat, reports of workers getting ill, and the size and risk
potential of the business, with smaller businesses getting preference.
A company may also be referred to the program by OSHA. That could
happen if the agency receives a non-formal complaint such as one that is
unsigned or from a worker who has been fired.
Companies may also be referred after being cited. OSHA might be
willing to reduce the penalty if a company agrees to have a consultant come
in and verify that everything is corrected, says Cavanagh. They dont say
you have to come to us, but they usually let the employer know about our
program and that its free of charge. C

TECH PERSPECTIVE

Lifting with Vacuum

Technology scraps the straps and chains and moves workers out of harms way
By Cory Dellenbach

limbing up and down a truck bed full of pipe is dangerous. Yet

when new pipelines are installed, workers often have to climb to
the top and hook up chains or straps to get the pipe down.
Cables or straps and chains have been the most common
things contractors have used when lifting pipes, says Randy Hayes, corporate
sales director for Vacuworx. That was until the vacuum lifting application
became available.
Vacuworx, based in Tulsa, Oklahoma, manufactures material-handling
equipment that uses a vacuum seal to lift pipes of all sizes and materials,
including concrete, steel, ductile iron, plastic, fiberglass and PVC.
The Vacuworx Pipe Handling Systems have been used to stockpile and
load rail cars, handle pipe without endangering personnel in close quarters
at in-plant operations, fit concrete and cast iron pipe together in a ditch, and
move heavy construction materials into staging areas.
We see a lot of people now requiring contractors to use vacuum lifting
just because its so much safer and faster, Hayes says. It requires less
personnel. One guy can load, unload or string pipe by himself without having
to climb on pipes and trucks and stand under the pipe.
LIFTING EQUIPMENT
The vacuum lifting equipment from Vacuworx can be attached to a wide
range of equipment, including excavators, backhoes, loaders, cranes, forklifts
and more. The company has six models on the market that can lift objects of
various dimensions weighing up to 44,000 pounds.
The most common equipment to attach it to is an excavator, and we
can attach it to any brand, Hayes says. Until recently, the majority of our

vacuum lifters have used a diesel engine to drive the vacuum pump to create
the vacuum on whatever object the operator was trying to lift.
The latest series of vacuum lifters are hydraulically driven. The vacuum
pump is powered by the hydraulics of the excavator. It eliminates the noise
generated by the diesel engine and eliminates fuel requirements, as well as
any maintenance requirements for the engine. This has also allowed us to
reduce the overall weight of the vacuum lifter, Hayes says.
Vacuworx lifting systems feature a hydraulic rotator that allows for
360-degree rotation and is fully self-contained. Vacuum pads can be easily
changed in a matter of minutes to allow the user to adapt from one pipe
size to another. The unit is operated by wireless remote, but Vacuworx also
provides an emergency hardwired kit in case the wireless remote becomes
damaged or cannot be used.
The system pulls a vacuum between the pad and the object to be lifted,
providing a powerful positive seal, says Paula Bell, marketing manager.
The lifting system can operate in weather conditions from snow to
extreme heat. We have proven the use of the technology in all conditions,
Bell says. Our vacuum lifters can even lift pipe in unclean conditions and on
somewhat uneven surfaces.
Vacuum lifting technology doesnt damage materials or bonded coatings
and eliminates the need for cribbing and spacers for pipe. Using the lifting
system can eliminate damage that sometimes occurs when handling pipe
with straps or chains.
CHANGES IN TECHNOLOGY
One of the biggest changes in the pipe lifting technology has been the
addition of wireless remote operation.
The systems are operated by wireless remote control from the cab of the
host machine, Bell says. Because it is operated from the cab and because
the operator has such precise control over the movement of the load, there is
no need to have people on the ground in harms way.
The company has also developed lifting tools for plates, slabs, concrete
barriers and horizontal directional drill stems.
Oil and gas has been the primary market for us the last several years,
Hayes says. Now weve started to move into other markets since we can
handle a wide variety of pipes and other materials. Were getting into water
and sewer rehab work, mining, and road and bridge construction applications
as well with the plate and slab lifting applications.
The equipment is helping make heavy-duty material handling safer,
Hayes says. Owners and workers are looking for safer and more efficient
material-handling solutions in all industries. C

EXPERIENCE WITH AN EXPANDING SLATE OF
COMPLEMENTARY SERVICES BY PETER KENTER

DEDICATED SERVICE

Levine and Sons is a family-owned business thats been active in

the Detroit area so long that when it first opened in 1927, technicians
on plumbing service calls traveled by trolley with their toolboxes. The
company has remained true to its plumbing roots, but has expanded into
related areas of service, including commercial and residential HVAC and
sewer lateral relining. The business operates on four simple principles to
thrive in an economically challenged market: know your market, know your
job, arrive quickly and work efficiently.

The business, founded by Louis Levine, went on hiatus during the Great
Depression but was firing on all cylinders by the end of World War II.
Louis son, Tom, got into the business when he was 18 years old and is still
working with the company at 82 (see sidebar).
Then, as now, the companys bread and butter was service and repair
work including both plumbing and heating. The company also performed

bets, preparing for the possible conclusion of the refinery work with an
increased investment in the plumbing business.
Today, the business employs 25
people and is headquartered in Redford Charter Township, Mich., a little
more than 10 miles west of Detroit.
Toms three sons assist him with the
business, with Jim running operations and estimating, Dan handling
finances, and Paul specializing in
ordering, inventory management and
equipment maintenance.
The company offers drain
cleaning, sewer lining, pipe bursting, CCTV inspection, and dig-andreplace sewer line work in addition
to standard plumbing and HVAC
services. The customer mix is 80
percent residential and 20 percent
light commercial.

BETTER BUSINESS

Price Your Work Properly

Letting the competition set your rates will only drive your business broke
By Steve Huff

ost plumbers I talk to have no idea how to properly price their

service and repair work. They usually pretend to be customers and
call other plumbers in their area, find out what they charge per
hour (the going rate) and set their prices accordingly. If you are like
those who think undercutting the going rate by $5 or $10 an hour will bring
you more business, youll eventually realize thats just the going-broke rate.
If you are basing your pricing on someone elses hourly rate, ask yourself
this: How did they come up with that number? Is it based on the actual costs
of doing business or was the number just pulled out of a hat?
Even if your competitor was smart enough to sit down and accurately
calculate a rate that turns a profit, is that number right for you?

Think about this: Lets say the going rate in your area is set by a guy who
works out of his house. Hes a one-man operation and works under the radar
with no license or insurance, while you rent office space outside your home,
pay someone to answer the phone, and are properly licensed and insured.
But you still only charge his going rate. My question to you is: Whos making
more money?
Labor rate
The rule of thumb is that your labor rate should be five times the hourly
wage of your highest paid tech. For instance, your highest paid field employee
makes $25 an hour. Multiply that by five and your labor rate will be $125 an
hour. That labor rate stays the same for all your revenue-producing employees
even if they are paid a lower hourly wage.
To break that down, once you subtract that employees hourly wage,
whats left ($100) goes to pay for everything else. And I mean everything:
trucks, insurance, rent, lights, water, office wages, office supplies, taxes,
owners compensation, benefits everything.
Charge for the helper
The one thing it does not pay for, and a lot of people miss this, is a
helpers wages. If you send a technician and a helper out on a job and bill
the client the going rate of $125 per hour, youre covering the technicians
wages and all the other overhead costs outlined above. Youre not, however,
bringing in any additional revenue to cover the helpers wages and associated
overhead. We have never come up with a definitive multiplier for a helpers
wages, but at minimum you should charge double his wages to cover the cost
of his hourly pay and the associated overhead.
Mark it up
The other area where most service plumbers dont charge enough is in
the markup for their materials. If you want to make money and be successful,
you must mark up your materials correctly and base your labor rate on your
own costs of being in business and not someone elses. Otherwise you are no
longer in control of running your business the other guy is. C

Avoid Common Credit

Card Tricks and Traps

Erik Gunn is a magazine writer and

editor in Racine, Wisconsin.

Follow these tips to find the best card deal to conveniently

cover your monthly business expenses
By Erik Gunn

bout 546 million cards from the four major card issuers (Visa,
MasterCard, American Express and Discover) were in circulation
in the United States in 2012, according to the February 2012 Nilson
Report. That works out to about two cards for every person over 20.
Like any other tool for your business, effective credit card use means
careful analysis and firm control. A credit card is a loan. Evaluate it as you
would any loan and dont get swayed by those tempting promises of low
introductory fees, cash rebates and airline miles.
WHY USE A CREDIT CARD?
Even if you run your business primarily on cash, you may have monthly
or annual payments that you dont want to forget or delay things like your
photocopier lease, landline, cellphone bill, office lease payment, insurance
premiums and so forth.
By setting up an automatic credit card payment for the item, you make
sure those bills are paid on time. The other step is to make sure you pay off the
resulting credit card debt. So set up your business bank account to pay the full
amount of those fixed costs back to your credit card each month a few days
before the cards bill is due.
Your phone stays on, the credit card bill gets paid off each month, maybe
you get some airline miles in the bargain, and youre happy. (Not to mention
that you get an itemized statement at the end of the year that will make your
accountant happy.)
Why not just write a check or use a debit card for those expenses? Because
you want them to be paid even if youre so busy you dont have time to eat
lunch, let alone pay the phone bill. But theres another reason, too: You dont
want automatic payments drawn from a debit account. A hacker can drain
your bank account in a heartbeat, and the more entrances into your account
(like automatic payments), the more vulnerable you are.
Of course, your bank will get you the money back, but it can be a massive
inconvenience and you may have no cash at all for several days. But with a
credit card, your liability in fraudulent transactions is limited to $50 if you
report a problem immediately.
If your card offers additional warranty protections worth using, buy
equipment this way but only if you will pay off the balance immediately. But
first, read the fine print and ask your lawyer or accountant when its a big piece
of equipment; your dealer or manufacturers warranty might be just as good.
Still, a card-based guarantee is worth asking about.
BUSINESS OR PERSONAL?
Of course youre going to pay the business credit card bill from your
business checking account; you already know that you need to separate

60

Cleaner March 2016

business and personal expenses which means keeping your business credit
card for business only. That brings us to a more complicated wrinkle, though.
Some credit cards are specifically marketed as business credit cards
NerdWallet.com, Bankrate.com, CreditCards.com and CreditKarma.com
all list various offers from credit card companies, with guides to finding cards
with lower interest rates, good points-for-purchase structures, or lower annual
fees. Be aware that the sites have partner relationships with some of the card
issuers and will highlight the offers of their partners whether those are the
best offers for Joe Business Owner or not.
And it gets trickier.
KNOW THE TERMS
Your personal credit card comes with certain protections under the Credit
Card Accountability Responsibility and Disclosure Act of 2009, or CARD. You
cant be billed twice in the same cycle; payments have to be applied to the
high-interest portion of your debt if you have more than one interest rate;
interest rate changes have to be announced in writing 45 days before they go
into effect; and the company has to give you at least 21 days to pay the bill.
Business cards, however, do not come with these protections. The card
company can raise your rate without notice. Your payments can be applied to
the balance with the lowest interest rate first, which costs you more money over
time. And rate increases can be applied retroactively, so what you thought you
financed at 12 percent is suddenly being financed at 15 percent.
So can you skip using a business card and earmark a specific card
to take advantage of CARD protections? Consult with your accountant and
attorney first. You qualified for that card even if all you use it for is business
based on your personal credit history.
Its imperative that if youve incorporated your business to shield your
personal assets, you must keep that distinction in use of credit cards as well.
At the very least, dont use the same card for business purchases that you use
for personal purchases, not even once, or you risk exposing your personal
assets to judgments against your business.
GETTING THE BEST CARD
Check for:
Interest rates. Look for the lowest rate possible, right? Yes unless, and
only if, your cash flow allows you to pay off the entire balance each month.
Then you can focus instead on lowering other items, like the annual fee.
Penalty fees, over-the-limit fees, interest rate hikes. Read that boring
fine print in the cardholder agreement, not just the hype in the card offer.
Penalties for missing a payment and fees for exceeding your spending limit
alone might not be so bad, but the real consequence is that your interest rate

Down time is expensive.

Rewards. Will you really use them and do they justify the annual
fee? If there are so many exclusions and qualifications that you only get $10
worth of rewards over three months, that $75 annual fee doesnt look like such
a bargain.

BALANCE TRANSFERS: FRIEND OR FOE?

It looks great: Open a new account at a lower interest rate, transfer a big
chunk of your outstanding balance to the new card, and youre paying less
interest. Win-win, right?
Well, maybe. If you havent opened a new account in a year or two, and if
your credit is excellent, then this can work well. But credit scores are calculated
partially on the basis of total utilization meaning if you have $100,000 total
credit available now and your balance is at $80,000, a new company may grant
you only $20,000 additional credit.
You then transfer $20,000 to the new card but youve still got $60,000
at the higher interest rate.
Also, that wonderful lower rate isnt forever. Check for the difference
between the cards introductory rate and the standard rate, and how long the
new rate lasts. If you can realistically pay off the transferred balance while the
introductory rate is in place, then it might be a workable solution. If not, dont
borrow trouble.
The bottom line: Credit cards can help streamline payments you need
to make no matter what, but you need to manage debt carefully and keep a
careful eye on card agreements to make sure youre not paying more in fees
and interest than youre getting back in rewards. C

drains and floor drains. 877/244-0556; www.duracable.com.

ELECTRIC EEL MODEL C

The Model C dual-cable sectional drain and
sewer cleaner from Electric Eel runs up to 200 feet
of 1 1/4-inch self-feeding dual cable in 8- or 10-foot
sections that require no handling when rotating. It
spins cable at twice the rpm of a continuous cable
machine for maximum cleaning power in 3- to 10inch lines. One-man operation means less time and
Electric Eel
labor expense. A heavy-duty 1/2 hp motor comes
standard, with 3/4 and 1 hp motors also available. A
custom-designed and manufactured gearbox ensures high quality, low cost
and parts availability. The heavy-duty, fully adjustable safety clutch keeps
cable and tool breakage to a minimum and provides overload protection. A

nozzle are launched into the lateral from the main, cleaning grease, roots and
buildups from 5 to 70 feet into the lateral. Units are available for 6- to 18-inch
mainlines. 800/246-5988; www.logiball.com.

PICOTE SOLUTIONS
DRAIN CLEANING CHAINS
Picote Solutions offers highspeed, high-efficiency drain cleaning
chains that attach to the Picote Miller Picote Solutions
drive units. There are two styles of
chains, the Original and the Cyclone, that range from 1 1/4 to 10 inches. The
Cyclone opens up to the inside diameter of the pipe to descale and remove
even the finest of roots. The Original rolls around the inside of the pipe,
removing roots and heavy tuberculation. An assortment of special drill heads
and removal tools can be used for severe, heavy-duty roots and blockages,
all without damaging the host pipe. To prevent further root infiltration,
the Picote Coating System seals and forms a watertight, noncorrosive
pipe. This easy-to-use system simply coats the pipe using a coating pump
and brush application to work the resin into the host pipe. 219/440-1404;
www.picotesolutions.com.

RIDGID K-50 SECTIONAL MACHINE

The K-50 Sectional Machine from RIDGID is
designed to clean 3/4 to 4-inch drainlines, making it

cable to clean 1 1/4- to 4-inch lines up to 100 feet. When equipped with an
A-17 adapter, the machine can run 50 feet of 5/16-inch cable or 35 feet of 3/8inch continuous-length cable. It is approved by CSA and UL standards, and
includes an A-1 drain-cleaning mitt. 800/769-7743; www.ridgid.com.

CUTTING NOZZLES
NOZZTEQ LUMBERJACK
The Lumberjack cutting nozzle from NozzTeq
is a low-torque, high-speed cutter for use with high
water pressures. It is effective at cutting roots but
also commonly used to cut grease, tuberculation,
protruding laterals and other buildups. Because
its low torque, its unlikely to cut through host NozzTeq
pipes. The bearings are sealed, grease-lubricated, water-cooled and largely
maintenance-free; water-cooled bearings dont need additional lubrication
and last a long time. Cutters rotate at a minimum speed of 10,000 rpm with
flow rates from 10 to 250 gpm at varying pressures. They operate in pipes
from 3 to 48 inches. All models clean with chain links, with optional cutting

Diquat-based Razorooter II root-control

herbicide from Dukes Root Control is
registered by the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency for controlling nuisance
tree roots in sanitary sewer line collections Dukes Root Control
systems and received a classification of
evidence of non-carcinogenicity for humans. In 2014, the EPA further
approved an amendment of labels to lower the signal word from warning to
caution. Crews insert a hose from manhole to manhole, preparing to fill the
affected sewer pipe with herbicide. The foam is then released, compressing
against pipe surfaces and penetrating cracks, joints and connecting sewers.
Roots are killed on contact, decay naturally and slough away. Applications
prevent root-related stoppages for two to three years. 800/447-6687;
www.dukes.com.

ROOTX
Chemical root control from RootX is a long-term
solution to pipeline root intrusion, as it stunts new
root growth without damaging the pipe, clearing
pipeline roots that can cause blockages resulting in
sanitary sewer overflows. Its been verified to have
no harmful effects on water treatment systems.
The simplicity of the application means crews can RootX
perform root control on-demand or as scheduled
preventive maintenance. It is registered with the EPA for both sanitary and
storm use (EPA Reg. No. 68464). 800/844-4974; www.rootx.com.

A camera inspection
revealed that backups at a
residence in the Hidden
Valley neighborhood of
La Jolla, California, were
caused by heavy root intrusion in the line. Roots
from nearby trees grew
into the joints and cracks,
blocking the flow of sanitary waste. The pipes ran under hilly terrain from the
homes clean-out in the yard to the citys main sewer line. Not only were the
pipes located 6 to 9 feet below grass and trees in the customers yard, but also
in the neighbors yard.

SOLUTION

Using the Nu Flow Micro-Cutter, Nu Flow America was able to clean

more than 200 feet of the 4-inch clay sewer pipe. The system rotates at approximately 2,000 rpm and will negotiate turns of 90 degrees in pipes down
to 2 inches in diameter. It runs at 40 cfm and allows for multiple cutting heads
to be attached.

using existing access points, without the need to dig up the customers
or the neighbors property. Then they installed the Nu Drain Pull-inPlace structural liner to prevent future root intrusion. 905/433-5510;

New McLaughlin vacuum excavator
can be mounted on any chassis
By Luke LeNoble
The MEGA VX200 6-inch vacuum excavator from McLaughlin can
be mounted on either a new or repurposed truck chassis. The tank, power
pack and water system all have a modular design and were developed to
fill the gap between smaller trailer-mounted vacuum excavators and the
largest truck-mounted units.
It has really been the customers who have shaped the specifications
of this vacuum excavator, says Jeff Wage, McLaughlin vice president.
The MEGA VX200 will help them be more productive and with the
options for spoil tank capacity stay on the job longer while reducing
time away from the job site dumping spoils. It also has the reliability they
need and is supported by the extensive Vermeer global network.
The 6-inch series offers spoil tank capacities ranging from 1,200 to
3,000 gallons and a standard option of 800 gallons of freshwater (400
gallons per side). It has a 6-inch hose diameter with a 3,200 cfm blower
at 18 inches of Hg and features a 5- by 18-foot three-stage cyclonic
filtration system.
Its just a super economical and reliable, low-maintenance filtration
system that allows you to vac wet and vac dry, Wage says. This can be

DITCH WITCH RT80 RIDE-ON TRENCHER

The midrange RT80 ride-on trencher from Ditch Witch is powered by a

74.5 hp turbocharged Deutz Tier 4 diesel engine. A compact design and axle
capacity give the trencher a static load rating of 39,000 pounds. Features include
a tight turn radius; three-speed, shift-on-the-fly ground drive controls for
improved versatility; and a standard cruise control system that senses changing
load conditions and automatically adjusts. An LCD color display shows engine
information and diagnostics. 800/654-6481; www.ditchwitch.com.

ROCK MILLS ENTERPRISES MANHOLE

COVER, DRAINAGE GRATE REMOVER

72

Cleaner March 2016

The remote-control Lifter PLUS manhole cover and drainage grate remover
by Rock Mills Enterprises delivers 3,500 pounds of magnetic gripping

mounted on any double-walled truck chassis thats out there. Whats

unique about that is there are a lot of trucks out there that customers
own or have access to for $30,000 to $60,000. It allows somebody to get
a vacuum package put together thats got a brand-new, high-performing
vac on a repurposed chassis and be at a great price point, or select a truck
of their preference and we can mount it for them.
A cam-over hydraulic rear door provides a 360-degree positive seal
without additional clamping requirements to keep fluids securely in
the debris tank. No components are inside the tank, so maintenance
is external.
For the sewer and drain contractor doing water valve boxes
or any sort of excavation work, this would be a good fit for them
getting in there and wanting to do surgical excavation, Wage says. A
6-inch system gives you the productivity in a 6-inch hose to pick up
larger material and be able to do production potholing. 800/435-9340;

CLERAL ONBOARD WEIGHING SYSTEM

TRIMBLE PIPE LASERS

RAUSCHUSA PORTABLE
MAINLINE INSPECTION SYSTEM

The SIM onboard weighing system and embedded computerized load

equalizer for tandem and tridem suspensions from Cleral USA assesses
the weight of each axle and divides it equally between them by controlling
air pressure of the pneumatic auxiliary axle. The auxiliary lift axle is fully
managed by the SIM control, which raises or lowers the pressure of the axle in
accordance to the legal load limits. It can be used on both straight-body units
and tractor/trailer pairings with either the Reflex (outside mount) or Kiload
K2 (cab mounted). 866/901-7372; www.cleral-usa.com.

Spectra Precision DG613 and DG813 pipe lasers from Trimble are
designed for manholes with precast inverts and a tight radius. Both models
have a grade range from negative 12 to 40 percent and are fully self-leveling
over the entire grade range. The cross axis is fully compensated for quick
setup and ensures the laser will be level. The RC803 remote control provides
full function control and utilizes infrared communications when in the pipe
at a distance of up to 500 feet. Flexible power options provide up to 40 hours
of operation with NiMH rechargeable batteries and 50 hours with alkaline
batteries; alkaline batteries can be used directly in the laser without a separate
battery pack. 800/527-3771; www.spectralasers.com.

The Mobile Pro portable mainline inspection system from RauschUSA

features a lightweight motorized cable reel (Cubix 300 with 1,000 feet of
cable) and a built-in 12-inch monitor and control unit that can fit in the bed
of a truck. The C135 camera/tractor system with 17-square-inch footprint
includes modular upgrades for laser profiling and lateral launching from the
same unit. 877/728-7241; www.rauschusa.com.

engine and heavy-equipment manufacturing, assembly and repair. Features
include a black oxide finish, TIG-welded socket retention pin that provides
full rotation power to the socket, a 7/32-inch cross hole and bevel drive
end. The extensions are available in a variety of SAE and metric socket sizes
and lengths in both 1/2-inch and 3/8-inch square drives. 800/446-7404;
www.snaponindustrialbrands.com.

The 1125 Series of motorized hose reels from COXREELS features a

one-piece, all-welded A-frame base as well as a low-profile outlet riser and
open drum slot design for a non-crimping, smooth hose wrap. Features
include a direct gear drive that requires no maintenance, lubrication or
chain adjustment, in addition to multiple safety features, including a simple
drive system with less moving parts. In place of the chain sprockets, the
direct gear drive ensures an uninterrupted reel operation. 800/269-7335;

WWETT
- Bob G.
We can help when others cant. I had a call from a customer who was looking at a job at the famous
Milton Hershey School in Hershey, Pennsylvania. The school recently had an expensive floor of high
psi concrete poured in one of the buildings. During the pouring, concrete got in the
main drain line. Other people who looked at the job said there was no
way to clear the drain without cutting through the floor. My
customer called me; I recommended using his Warrior jetter with

a smaller hose and a Warthog nozzle. With this combination, he

was able to clear the line and keep the costly floor intact.
